I didnt say it WILL stop. Just that it SHOULD. The music-listening populace at large has terrible taste, so Im aware nothing will change. Thats how **** like Motionless in White gets popular.

What a lot of people like will make money.
What makes money will keep being made.
What keeps being made because people like it will continue to be pretty damn popular.

It happens with all music, and with things besides music, but not just in 'pop' ... it carries over into metal, electronic, etc

The part I disagree with here is assuming that people know what they like. The music industry isn't based around making music for the tastes of the consumer but rather creating music and telling them that they like it. The average consumer isn't a person with discerning taste nor has the time or want to become knowledgeable in what quality music is. Throughout history, there has always been terrible music meant for the masses. It's not like it's a recent trend but the bad music, the stuff you hear on top 40 radio, gets left behind because it's not meant to last. It's not supposed to be a monumental work or construction. When we look back on the 50's, 60's, 70's, etc. we're only looking at the stuff that has survived the test of time. Even look back to last year and think of all the music that came out. You've forgotten the bad stuff and only remember the good.

I was referring mainly to modern metalcore. which is not metal but parades itself off as metal.

It irks me when I want to discuss metal with people, only to be met with "I LOVE [terrible metalcore band with generic, catchy clean-vocaled choruses, constant breakdown, and crystal-clear glossy production]!!" These bands all need to stop, and hang up the skates.

At least top 40 pop doesnt masquerade as being anything more than simplistic dance music.

So, you care less about the fact that it's "bad" to you, but that they're labeling themselves as something they're not? See, this is the kind of thing that makes me dislike labeling things like music cause all it leads to is frustration. For such a subjective form of entertainment, it's hard to pin down a definition for each genre because everyone has their own opinion on the matter. Whether or not you like a song is all that matters imo.

Its actually quite easy to pin down genres for modern metalcore because aside from having a keyboardist or not, every band sounds the same.

Its terrible, trendy music that just so happens to parade itself off as something it blatantly isnt.

You're making the huge mistake again of forgetting that music is subjective. Its a matter of opinion.

Your opinion is that all metalcore is trendy and sounds the same... while someone elses opinion may be that all metal is horrible and sounds the same. You hate metal with catchy clean vocals, someone else hates metal with unintelligible grunts and growls.

Its laughable to watch music elitists as they flip flop. Anyone who likes music they dislike has poor tastes, and then when people start listening to the music they like suddenly theyre posuers and bandwagoners and not true fans of the genere.

Quality of music isn't subjective though. There is objectively bad music as in poor construction and composition. However, it is personal preference to say that you like or dislike a genre or style of music

Bounty, again you only read what you like. I don't hate metal with clean vocals. I hate METALCORE with CATCHY, CLEAN VOCALED CHORUSES, and BREAKOWNS, and squeaky clean production. Its poorly composed, generic music.

Also metalcore is not metal. Its hardcore with metal elements. It is metal in NAME only.

Correct. But what The Butt is talking about is not the parts of music that are not subjective; he's not talking about the actual construction of the track, the melodies, harmonies, or anything of the sort... the things he's talking about are purely the subjective areas; What is good and what is bad in his opinion without any regards to an actual scale, what he likes when it comes to metal versus what other people like, and what is 'true' metal and what isnt.

The Butt wrote:

I'm not reading what I want, and I wasnt stating that you (The Butt) hate any and all music with clean vocals, I was talking about the subjective aspect of music and how opinions can differ. The 'royal' you or whatever you wish to label it. You (the person reading this, not just The Butt) can like thing A, but another person can like Thing B.... in fact we didnt even get into the point that someone out there likes both A and B, and that someone likes neither. It was a very simplistic example.

The Butt wrote:

Says you, who has neither the right nor the position to claim what is or isnt a particular genre of music. But see Arqwart's comment above regarding the folly of trying to overclassify everything. Metalcore is one of near 30 major subgenres of Heavy Metal music, and just because you feel it doesnt belong doesnt make it any less true.

People can like what they wish. Doesn't mean it isnt generic and poor composition though, which is the case with modern metalcore.

And no, it is fact that metalcore is not metal. Anyone who knows the history of the genre knows it. Metalcore stemmed from a non-metal genre (hardcore), with sprinkles of metal aspects thrown in. Having aspects of a genre, does not make something that genre.

Also, part of what makes metal what it is, is its attitude towards pop-music composition and practices. The contempt towards clean production jobs, poppy melodies and influence, verse-chorus-verse-chorus-break-chorus construction. Basically everything modern metalcore IS. You can't be part of a genre when you are the epitome of everything that genre stands against.

In closing, bands like Motionless in White, Asking Alexandria, Black Veil Brides, Enter Shikari, etc aren't metal. They exhibit traits that are super generic and exemplify the opposite of quality music.

You are outclassed in your knowledge of metal history, Bounty. I've been studying the genre intensely for 10+ years now. I can't even count the number of metal bands I know of and have listened to, its in the quadruple-digits (no joke). I've read books upon books about it. I've studied the history, the cultural impact of bands from around the world, the ideologies behind different subgenres and bands. Your knowledge of the matter is entry-level at best. Metal is my life.

When it comes to genres that are not metal-related, I will defer to your judgment. But when it comes to metal and related genres, it is best to sit back, and listen to me. Not meaning to be a dick, but I'm just trying to put things into perspective.

Metalcore stemmed from a lot of things, to include several subgeners of heavy metal and hardcore punk.

You're taking what 'The Butt' stands against and assuming that its what 'True Metal' stands against when 'The Butt' has no say in the matter. And you're taking 'what the people The Butt associates to be fans of Metal stand against' and assuming that it means 'what Metal stands against". There are many things that define the genres and subgenres of music, from favoring certain instruments, chord progression, style and tempo, etc etc etc... but "disliking certain other types of music" isnt one of them.

In closing the quality of a music has nothing to do with its genre, and like it or not there is super generic and poor quality metal. You dont get to stand there and claim "this music sucks, thus it is not metal" as if you you held some sort of authority over it.

You're reading what you want again. Reading comprehension is key.

I'm not saying metalcore isn't metal because it sucks. I like the older, adventurous stuff. But its not metal. It is HARDCORE WITH METAL ASPECTS.

You are wrong.

I defy you to label genre Beck's new release Morning Phase. This may be the greatest piece of music I have heard in 20 or 30 years.
I listened to it all the way through for the first time last night... and then three more times.
One the third listen today.
I consider this a masterpiece that stands with Dark Side of the Moon and Sgt. Pepper's.
Here's a taste.

I don't have to. Its music history 101. Metalcore stemmed from hardcore and punk music. Throw some metal aspects and some pop influence in, and you have metalcore.

BUT; this is what you fail to grasp; having aspects of a genre DOES NOT MAKE SOMETHING THAT GENRE. Hardcore music with pop and metal influence (so, metalcore) is not metal. Especially when the original ideology of metal, was to disregard and throw away all pop influence.

Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath, single-handledly one of the fathers of metal, claimed in many interviews, that his inspiration for the band's darker musical path, was that there were too many flowery pop bands of the time; he wanted to make music that was different, dark, and legitimately scary to people. Thus, their name was changed (from Earth to Black Sabbath), the pop influence was stripped entirely from their sound, and metal was born.

You cannot be a part of a genre, when you are an affront to what that genre stands for. Its the same way Christian metal bands with black metal aspects, are not black metal; it goes against the genre's core ideology.

As I said before: Your knowledge of metal is outclassed. I've been studying for 10+ years. If we start talking about other genres, I'm all ears for your knowledge. But metal is my forté, so it would do you well to listen.
