So I never got into the whole Flappybird craze, but of course you can hardly stumble around the net without seeing some of the chatter about it. And in one particularly humorous Reddit thread I stumbled upon the above link to the above browser game. So if you've got time to burn, and enjoy that sort of thing, enjoy flappin your doge...

Where is this chatter? This is the first time I've heard of it.

Flappy Bird was a game for phones that got really popular, but recently the developer pulled it from the game markets because of insane people.

If by "insane people" you mean copyright lawyers, then you are correct.

Actually, nintendo specifically came out and said that they were not responsible for it coming down. The developer of the game also came out and said that blatantly.

Here, from the developer of Flappybird himself, is the reason he had the game taken down. This is a direct quote from an interview.

“But it happened to become an addictive product. I think it has become a problem. To solve that problem, it’s best to take down Flappy Bird. It’s gone forever.”

Theres a big uproar cause he was supposedly making $50,000 a day in ad revenue and all sorts of other stuff... and now theres like 50 knock off games out in the appstores ...

Not my sort of thing really, I've not even tried flapping my doge ...it's quite unsanitary.

The guy said he was going to remove the game. Than everyone and their mothers download it in fear and hype. Now some big name like Rovio is going to buy it and make a million sequels, facebook games and all sorts of spin-offs.

The reason the game was taken down, my friends, is the only reason that matters in the industry: making more money.

This is just like how it was before the video game crash of the 80s. Except now nobody knows what quality is so they may keep playing the terrible games.

..... Have you forgotten? The great video game developer in the sky is going to tell us exactly what we are going to play and we are going to like it. /end sarcasm/

So. Here is my viewpoint. Games like Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot and Mario and Sonic are fun. They are fun because the developers focused on gameplay first and had fun with it.

Modern video games care only about who has the best graphics and gameplay suffers horrendously. To the point where bad games like "The Last of Us" and "Grand Theft Auto V" are praised as the best video games ever made (they really aren't at all). At some point, people are going to get tired of all this and realize that they already own the new game on the shelf with a slightly different skin. Then the market will crash and AAA video games will be gone forever, leaving nothign but Farmville and motion controls in the wreckage because that is what hardcore gamers want. Because game companies say so.

Wow.... that came out of nowhere.

I knew that the whole Flappybird conversation may lead to a conversation about how a lot of the app store games these days are big rip offs of other concepts. (Because, well, they are.) But even then the post above is on par with conspiracy theories when it comes to being 'out there'. I mean I get where you're coming from Mjack33, but not only is it only an opinion...you've taken that opinion and zealotized it. There are a ton of subpar games out there these days only trying to bring in a buck, but there are likewise just as many good ones, which leaves several...glaringly large...logical holes in your viewpoint.

Firstly, graphics arent everything; In fact there are a lot of games that are quite popular without being graphic intensive. Games like Minecraft that embrace the 8-bit style art, indie games like Super Meat Boy and Binding Of Isaac which where hugely successful in their niche even with essentially flash player graphics, as well as games like Bastion and Torchlight that embrace an artistic style graphic rather than being hyper-realistic. Several of the bullethell type games that you yourself enjoy arent graphic intensive and have massive fan bases. Heck even WoW's cartoony graphics from 2005 are still chugging along fine if you want to look at it that way, its stomping out other MMOs that try for a more realistic look.

Secondly, games like "The Last of Us" and "Grand Theft Auto V" may not be your cup of tea, but it's quite apparent that they have a huge following, and not just because of graphics. Sure the point can be made that after a certain number of equals that you're not really going to be seeing any major changes to the game as a whole, but in addition to better graphics engines games like GTA V are bringing a new story, more missions, new weapons and vehicles, new and larger maps, etc etc to the fans that happen to enjoy that series. The game rating system these days is hugely flawed, but even disregarding it you can look at games like "The Last of Us" and it was absolutely devoured by fans that loved the story, gameplay, and so much more than just the graphics.

So, its okay to have your opinions about the state of games these days, but you need to realize that they are just that. Your opinions. And to realize that other people are free to have their own opinions, and that those opinions can be very much different that yours. Granted the majority isnt always right...but theres no reason for anyone to adopt some sort of elitist hipster view on something and go about bashing it just cause other people liked it and they dont. Everyone has their own tastes in games, its a fact of life. You may not get the same feeling about a game now as you did when you were ten, but guess what, you were ten back then you'd have loved anything, that doesnt make the games now bad. Look back at some of those childhood games sometime and see them for the buggy, flawed, subpar games that they were and stop letting nostalgia drive the rating.

Now, back on topic, go play some Flappy Doge.

I'm not talking about graphics, I prefer games with bad graphics, I'm merely talking about the volume of games, especially bad mobile games. It was the saturation of the market that was a major factor in the crash. I should probably elaborate more, my jokes often require several steps to get to...

@bounty_hunter, I'm not adopting an elitist or hipster view on anything. I have genuinely played through both games, and I can say without any bias that I have no idea how they got away with it. As for graphics, I never said they made a game. I said game companies are starting to act that way and neglecting gameplay.

And it spawned from lily's comment on the video game crash of the 80's. I think.

:ontopic:

As for Doge,

A doge (Italian pronunciation: [ˈdɔːdʒe]; plural dogi or doges) is an elected chief of state lordship, the ruler of the Republic in many of the Italian city states during the medieval and renaissance periods, in the Italian "crowned republics".

I fail to understand any of the jokes here. Is it just because the word sounds weird and/or like a euphanism, or is there an actual slang I'm missing here? Like the website has a dog? on it, so I don't think the humor is coming from that.
