I'd like to play someone versatile, a character with a lot of different options for dealing with a situation.

So looks like people are rolling up a cleric ad a paladin now...... Ill think of something else, like a barbarian.

wow that is some horrible HD rolling. Um. Can I reroll? That is literally an average 4.3 off a d12 of HP. (Barbarian) I'd total out at 63, where the "average" according to this char builder I found would be 95.

Also, where do you detail the equipment we can get?

Adding on to rstnme's equipment question if I do roll a Wu Jen how are you handling my spell book? Are we going to hand wave that any scrolls I purchase during character creation I have already took the time to record into my spellbook or should I purchase the scrolls and then make a butt-ton of Spellcraft checks?

So, I found something that says level 9 characters should have 36k worth of gp and stuff. I haven't equipped any of this pending approval, but this is what I got:

+3 Greataxe
+3 Bracers of Armor
+2 cloak of resistance
Handy Haversack
Rust summoning pouch

cool?

I am Not The DM... but I can give a quick look over the list to try to expedite the process

+3 Greataxe: 18320gp (Remember, you need to add the price of a masterwork item)
Handy Haversack: 2000
Cloak of Resist +2: 4000
Bag of Tricks (Rust): 3000
Bracers of Armor +3 will not stack with your armor worn since they both provide an armor bonus: Would be 9k
Total Gold Spent: 36,320 (27,320 w/o the bracers)

You also haven't bought any nonmagical items in that (like the Breastplate or daggers on your sheet). I know they're pretty individually cheap but I don't know what the policy on coin counting is, 'cause I just itemized to the copper myself.

To deal with the Bracers not stacking, I'd recommend
Ring of Protection (+2; 8k)
Amulet of Natural Armor (+2; 8k)
Enchanting your Breastplate (+3; 9,350 minus whatever you paid for the nonmagical listed on your character sheet. Would need to make room. or +2 for 4,350 and having a lot of room.)

I thought armor bonuses stacked? I mean, isn't that the point? more armor is more protection?

Same-named bonuses very rarely stack... Dodge and Circumstance are the only exceptions listed in the SRD (Well, and there are unnamed bonuses), but in 3.0 I think Luck might have been the same way. The point of Bracers of Armor is for characters who cannot benefit from actually wearing armor (Mages, folks who stack dex to psychotic levels)

Heavier armor gives a bigger bonus, shields give a shield bonus, but wearing plate mail over your chain mail gives you nothing plate mail wouldn't -- Bracers of Armor are the same way.

Yeah, what Tevish said. :D. Apologies for not responding earlier today, at work presently.

I am considering magical items and non-magical items in the same wealth pool. So in general, you will want to keep a little back (maybe 500 gp or so) to account for your normal adventuring gear, unusual spell components, spell focuses, non-magic light sources like sunrods, etc. if you have a bunch of expensive tools like a thief or bard might have, you might need more than 500 saved to pay for it.

Someone took a cleric, true, but I thought you called Paladin? Who's got the Paladin? Dude, where's my car?

Wizard spells are tricky, unlike sorceror spells which are not. As a class feature, it is expectd that you learned more spells than a sorceror and that you used those scrolls up before during your character's "development". I'm going to say that as long as uou don't write in all the spells or otherwise abuse it, you can pick a reasonable amount for your Wu Jen. It only makes sense, or else I just penalized you for your class feature. Scrolls would be what you are carrying as spares or additional spells you want use/learn, and only those would be charged to your wealth. If you are concerned you may be taking too much as a "reasonable" amount of learned spells, send me a PM and I'll look over the list before you get too far. This is all assuming that you learn spells like a wizard, rather than a sorceror, of course. I don't have the book here at work. I'm not inclined to do a butt-ton of checks for a pbp that I didn't DM past development through.

The average dice Wizards uses would have you at about 58 hit points before mods. As you would roll 6.5, or 13 every two d12 dice. So given your deplorable roll, yeah, go ahead and re-roll.

One such character is a bard for a straight vanilla class. He can often be the 2nd best fighter, rogue, wizard, and cleric in any party. If you want some other options that involve specific combos of abilities, you would need to clarify what you want to do.

As for bards, earlier editions didn't have very good bards, but the 3rd edition bard is my fave base character and is possibly the only base character you can solo adventure with. Interested, or do you favor something else? If not, let me know what kinds of things you would want to do...and then I can make some suggestions. thanks.

Just the update on the input I need to finish off my character sheet

1) Whether Gloves of the Gatecrasher are a valid magic item.
2) Whether Wings of Flying are priced as printed in the 3.0 DMG or as Errata/SRD.

I'll be able to input finalized gear and derive stats from the same with those questions answered :)

@Cato: Yeah, bards are brilliantly versitile, though seldom the most powerful in any aspect. Rogues can also be really versitile if you take Use Magic Device, though we already have a pure rogue so I don't know what everyone's opinion on different build versus different class is. Clerics and Druids -- depends on how you build them. They're full spellcasters combined with most of a fighter, so they're a pretty good frame for having an out in any situation. You could multiclass too: It's not usually the best option, statistically speaking, but it's fun.

Sure, a bard sounds fine. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to make a character sheet, because my entire experience with D&D comes from that one time I got bored and decided to read the entirety of OOTS.
