I don't think likening it to WotC's system now - or even the prior incarnation - is the right comparison. The better comparison is back in their vB days. And as I recall, that was a limit of 100 total messages. (mods and GMs got more; I don't know what mods got, but GMs were raised to 250.)
Uh what? We're comparing 2013 to 2013. Not 2013 to a system over half a decade old.

As best as I can tell, phpBB doesn't have an overall limit; instead it limits the number of user-created folders and the number of messages per folder. And actually, my previous number is probably low because I didn't include your inbox in that. So when I said you could have 800 messages, it would look like you could have 1000.
Then if it doesn't have a limit, why not just increase it?

I would need to see the database table structure for private messages, but there actually could be an argument made for a space concern depending on how the database stores the actual message. There are a couple ways to do it, and some are more efficient (from a storage perspective) than others.

I've been on forums with practically limitless space.
Other than WotC (which I addressed above), who else?
And a practical question that I don't think was actually answered: do you really believe you'll need to store more than 1000 messages? And a new question: are you aware the software has options to allow you to download them into a file? There's even a nifty little program that'll parse the downloaded file for you and display them as actual messages rather than just a wall of text. Lemme add finding that to my to-do list.

Various sports forums, and source.
Yes I do. I have several hundred between various conversations already, and thats not including the automatically deleted messages that happened before I realized it was automatically deleting old messages and I added folders for storage.
I tried that. In all three formats. All of them result in a file conversation that is unreadable and unfollowable.
