Hello all, I just wanted to let you know about Magic Card Maker. It is the quickest and easiest card maker on the net, and can be a powerful tool in designing sets. Good luck!

that seems like a really good resource for making images quickly i have never seen it before

since it seems on topic i will also mention that magic set editor is probably the most powerful (though you need to download it and set it up) card editor available. I'd recommend it above this net-based one for making sets since it has a lot of useful tools specifically for that.

Rock on.

I feel like this would be useful to YMTC, as not everyone there would necessarily know about this stuff (if they're new to design/the forums). Maybe post it up there, too?

We should get a resource database together, honestly. It'd be helpful.

Yeah, I was also thinking this thread could just be used as a place to gather different resources for people engaged in fan creation stuff.

Hey all! Just a warning that advertising is against the CoC. I haven't locked this thread, but in the future, please ensure you include some discussion about the product you're linking to so it's not pure advertising.

Um, with all due respect, if this was an issue for us we would've said something. I don't really care that someone is sharing resources here. Maybe Yxoque feels differently, but if so I'd expect him to speak up, since this is his jurisdiction.

Really? I never clicked the link but does the site require money or something?

I mean it's obvious that we are sharing resources for projects. I mean we have you make the card here too, is it really that bad to share resources?

I think the issue was that the OP reads very much like an ad, regardless of whether that was the intention or not. So I think Furt's warning is justified.

It's a tool that people could use, he might as well have been linking pastebin. If advertising pastebin warrants a warning then i have no complaints though :]

I think Furt probably just didn't comprehend the nature of the post in the way it was intended. Mistakes happen.

Alright guys, let's not jump the moderator. I don't think Furt's judgment was too off since the post does look very much like advertisement, even if it was well-intended. It's also partly my fault, because a report was open about this issue and I didn't do anything about it. So let's not talk about moderation here anymore. If you do have any issues with moderation here or in the Art, Flavor and Story board, don't hesitate to shoot me a PM.

This is okay for single cards but magic set editor has far more power.

In what sense? I've never used either so I'm not really sure what's the most optimal.

I haven't used either, either (that's some funky looking grammar, there), but after doing some quick research I've found that set editor offers continual statistics for your set, such as color and rarity breakdowns. I assume that would be the main advantage.

Set statistics is the main practical advantage. There are some qol changes like instances of ~ becoming instances of the card name, mana symbols inserting automatically, and being able to predefine set mechanics in a list so that the reminder text is automatically inserted and formated.

It also has a more complete set of symbols and frames and such. Planeswalkers, Coloured Artifacts, and so forth will look more like what they do in real MTG cards. You can also make textless promo cards and future sight cards and things like that. Symbolswise they have the hybrid symbols and i think maybe even tribrid symbols but that might be a patch i downloaded. Untap and phyrexian mana symbols, and so forth.

How customizable is the image database? I've previously considered doing custom mana symbols and frames and so on for people, but I wasn't sure what the image files and formats were like...

I've previously put in custom watermarks simply by replacing files in the resource folder. I imagine the same can be done for most of the simple elements. They have tutorials for creating "templates", which essentially determine where the text/image/whatever fields on a card are and what the art is by default. As an example, planeswalkers and regular cards use different templates. People have created a lot of templates for magic, and a lot of templates for games that aren't magic, so I imagine there aren't a lot of limits on what you can do there. I tried to figure it out on my own once before they added tutorials but it was beyond me, so it's probably not that easy to get into without some experience doing similar things.

Awesome. I'd love to work with YMTC on something that actually required different templates or mana symbols or watermarks. I know between me and Barinellos we've got enough expertise to pull it off design-wise.

Personally, I think making a set (or even part of a set) is one of if not the most powerful communication tool for a plane, but I also realize that it takes a huge amount of forethought and tinkering to nail down mechanically. Experience in the field is also helpful, something that I sorely lack (though I do believe I am capable of the forethought).
