(Sharaka references what happened here, so I advise you read that one first)

with the wrong foot (1.5k words)

EDIT: this meeting has an alternative ending here. Being housed in the Fight Club thread, be warned that it goes much, much bleaker.

Fun little story here. The tension is palpable, and again, Kerik's lack of control causes both him and Daneera grief, though not as much as it could have, considering the alternate ending, which I will talk about elsewhere. When Sharaka says she wants to find a plane where Viashino are allowed in inns, my first instinct was to want Daneera to name one, but then I realized two things. First, the name wouldn't help Sharaka anyway, so it would be a relatively pointless gesture. Second, I think the only plane that we know canonically Daneera has been to that have Viashino was Arbagoth, and it's unclear if any inns are still standing there. There might be Viashino on Kokkinos, although I do not think that's ever been established.

I like the little ways that Sharaka and Daneera test one another here, and considering I have read the alternate endings, this maybe goes without saying, but it's easy to see how things could go badly. What I really like is the exploration of perspective, because I don't necessarily think anyone is in the wrong here, and I think both sides do things that the other can legitimately consider rude, improper, or insulting. The fact that, in this version, all parties are willing to live and let live is pretty remarkable, I think.

I will have more to say later, on the alternate ending, so I will end this here. It will take a bit to get my thoughts together, so it will be later tonight before I get to it. Regardless, thanks for posting!

It wasn't designed, but there's a parallel between this and the previous piece of this "storyline": in both cases a werewolf's innate (and unchecked) bloodlust ignites a violent situation that has a problematic fallout. In the first case, Sharaka is cornered has to either kill or maim the parents in self-defense, orphaning a child that has no way to take care of himself. Here, Kerik attacks Sharaka on sight and she retaliates with a strong but non-lethal blast-strike, which may be either an instinctual reaction (get the threat out of her face) or a show of strength to later impose a truce (we don't know whether she had smelled Daneera before hitting Kerik). In either case, Daneera and Sharaka's goals are not mutually exclusive (their safety and the protection of their loved ones) and they both know better than resorting to physical violence in response to mere words (Daneera's hand never goes near her knife, and Sharaka never levels her dagger at someone after "warning" Kerik) so once those two elements are established the situation won't escalate further without external factors, even if they trade barbs and try to wrestle for the dominance in the conversation - it won't do to just roll over in front of a potential threat, no matter if it could also be a potential friend.

I may be overanalyzing my own writing here, but Sharaka giving her back to Daneera is, in a way, similar to Fisco getting Daneera her knife in Httap: a show of confidence that demands her to either exploit the perceived vulnerability or acknowledge ("respect", if you use Daneera's wording here: this one of the places where the :r: and :g: worldviews clash) the strength of her "rival". Of course, given what we know about the fights both before and after this piece, we know Sharaka is far from defenseless no matter which direction she's facing...

I've been miffed by this on Sharaka's behalf since forever - not for any failing on CKY's part, but for the inevitable one-sidedness of a two-liner - so here's the likely follow-up to that exchange:

This is an interesting dichotomy of perspective and experience. Sharaka and Jinsen seem to be on opposite extremes in philosophy, yet ironically both are potentially equally deadly in combat. It's interesting how they both see things like social interactions and combat necessity, and I feel (as I usually do) that the "answer," as it were, lies somewhere in the middle. Fascinating, then, that Kimberley plays that sort of middle role, as she tries to decide which direction she would lean. It sort of makes me wonder what an alternate reality version of the M:EM would be where it was Sharaka that Kimberley sought out to learn from rather than Jinsen.

Thanks for posting!

Glad it comes across nicely, I was afraid I was strawmanning Jinsen too much.

Yeah, the kor Weapon Masters and the Burnspine viashino, being so very :w: and :r: in nature respectively, approach warfare from very different directions. I was surprised, however, that what we see of kor caravans (koravans?) in Fear wouldn't be so far from the nomad tribes Sharaka specifically comes from, together with the shared deep-rooted ideal of freedom, which is pretty interesting.

Hey, Sharaka isn't in the "single-handedly levels armies" ballpark (yet?), but she appreciates your vote of confidence :D

Yeah, we see Jinsen very cavalier with trivial stuff like, say, food, while Sharaka, having had Not The Best Experiences lately, can be more defensive than needed. Still, even if her attitude of course plays a big role, and Jackie had a few choice words about that in their non-canon encounter, Sharaka's point about being a viashino planewalker is not something Jinsen, or anybody else, can easily argue away. Yeah, I know I touched on that in the Daneera encounter as well :V

Well, before I recently reread her dossier and her stories, I had been left with the impression she was aligned with :r: mana, so strong her emotions look compared to Jinsen's. Still, the understandable but sometimes jarring contrast between the two would definitely lead her to appreciate a worldview where her strong emotions are not just ok, but actually potential assets, even as she continues to deeply respect Jinsen.

Sharaka teaching a human to fight, especially shortly after her ascension, would be... a tricky thing to accomplish, to be sure. If Sharaka had been older, like in her 30s or so, with both her magic and worldview developed to match, now that could be interesting to see. She'll become a powerhouse in her own right, but most of her skills don't translate easy to a human anatomy. On the other hand, the emp/telepathy link they'd build between them would be a pretty nifty cheat code.

A Sharaka that somehow cannibalized some of the Lotus' techniques (or maybe some of the other Weapon Masteries, since they're more geared toward multiple weapons) would be pretty awesome(/terrifying) to see as well, something along the lines of a :r:-heavy Jeskai monk... or just a living storm of destruction, a lightning-fast blur seamlessly alternating Lotus shockwaves, fire blasts and magic-boosted assaults, with some mass panic thrown in for fun. Her Jinsen-like name would probably be The Firestorm or something... ooo, shockwave-guided firestorms! Fun!

Hmm... if anyone has suggestions about these scenarios to flesh them out, I might have some Suppose Prose piece thrown together.

Thank you for reading and commenting!

A recent story struck me in the writing bone. If you don't know - or don't remember - who Tulemnak is, I suggest you (re) read this rather short story.

Oh, I apologize in advance for the formatting. I have too much fun messing around with it :V

like daughter...
