There will be both positive and negative things said about each. Doesn't matter though, they both work... so then the question is are they cheaper than the alternative, and the answer is sometimes they definitely are (and this is already true, early in the technology development cycle).

Got to do something about the world's voracious appetite for energy. I don't think solutions that seemingly assume that appetite will stagnate are viable. We need all the energy we currently produce, and we will need more. The idea that we can abandon resources, without for example fusion, is bordering on nonsense or worse.

yeah energy demands have always gone up and will continue to go up. Research into technologies to make energy consumption more efficient would be good, but lots of new technologies (AI and blockchain) require MASSIVE energy output, so I don't think we're gonna be able to slow down energy appetite (since we've never ever been able to before in the past).

weak example: my energy company has given me financial incentives to lower my energy consumption. They have given me easy ways to track it and have told me at certain times of extreme cold in the winter, between certain hours, if I lower my consumption, they'll give me money.

I've had that incentive in place for two winters now at least. I get e-mails from them the day before to remind me when those periods are.


i do absolutely nothing to curb my energy usage during those times.

And they're offering me MONEY. And I still do nothing.

You’re simply not poor enough. If the government would just find a way to make you poorer, then you’d be more likely to accept those incentives. Problem, kinda, solved.

Edit: alternatively they could artificially double the price of electricity, say, I dunno, by implementing terrible public policies. If nobody can afford to consume electricity then they won’t do so.

Man, I'm having some serious end of summer blues this year. My productivity is at basically zero, and I really don't get it.

Also, unrelated, I'm finally trying to quit smoking - maybe not entirely, but I'm trying to cut the habit part out. Wish me luck folks.

DJ! So proud of you! I smoked my last cigarette in very early July 2024 and haven't had a single haul since. i do miss it sometimes, but I've really been able to lay off the temptation completely. I must be out of the woods now. i've come to better control my stress and triggers which I think has led to it being successful this time. Taking more walks, etc.

Your timing is funny cuz this saturday I have a bday party for my best friend. We're gonna do go karts and poker. ALL of these guys smoke and they put HUGE peer pressure to smoke when they smoke cuz they're all social smokers that only do it if other people are smoking. So i will 100% be offered cigarettes and the last time I saw my best friend in June, we smoked. So he's not gonna like that I stopped lol. he's vaping now too which is awful.

But I'll try to stick to my guns and not smoke. i can't even allow myself to take one cuz I think after that it's too easy to just buy a pack as a 'treat'. I want to stay off of it. i've had it.
