Recently, I've been thinking about a meta set that I'm likely never to make. The set would thematically be based on table-top gaming. Here's how it breaks down in my head:

  • Enchantments in the set are actual table-top games. There'd be an enchantment called Chess, an enchantment called Catan, an enchantment called Dominion, etc. Each game enchantment would be created to boil down a game's essence into a few mechanics.
  • Artifacts would be specific game components: the dice tower from Wingspan, the spinner from Twister, the pies from Trivial pursuit, etc. I anticipate artifacts taking a smaller portion of the set than enchantments, but they have their purpose.
  • Creatures would represent different types of gamers. I don't have a roundtable of psychographics figured out, but one could be a quizmaster, one could be the party animal, one could be the tryhard, etc.
  • Planeswalker don't have to be in this set, but they could be famous gamers, whether real or imagined.
  • Sorceries/Instants would be gaming maneuvers/plays: roll for initiative, pass Go, "Uno!", etc.
  • Lands would be gaming locations: conventional hall, kitchen table, local store, etc.

Gaming types would be distributed through the colors, so here's my initial question to y'all: What would the different colors/color pairs/(maybe color triads?) enjoy doing in games? What color(s) is breaking out Cards Against Humanity? Who has their regularly scheduled session of Pandemic? Where are all of the Fantasy Sports nerds?

I am an enthusiastic table top gamer and am happy to help out :). Favourite games included:

Ark Nova, Obsession, Marvel Champions, Feast for Odin, Age of Innovation, Spirit Island, Everdell, Gloomhaven (not Frostaven so much), Brass, etc. I have even designed a few of my own.

As to your question, that is a tough one. Brainstorming (if I am understanding this correctly):

Blue - Analysis paralysis, action selection, deck building, hand management
White - rules books, catch up mechanics, cooperative games
Green - Worker placement, resource gathering, resource markets
Red - Auctioning, Area control
Black - take that mechanics, war games, traitor mechanics
Artifacts - engine building

I'll come back to this soon - about to play Weirdwood Manor with the family!

Enchantment (R)
Play with the top card of your library revealed.
You may pay the mana cost of the top card of your library to put it into your hand.

Ark Nova
Enchantment (R)
When Ark Nova enters, return all creatures to their owners hands.
Players can't cast creatures spells if they control at least as many creatures as lands.

Gloomhaven
Enchantment (M)
Whenever you cast a spell, if you have no cards in your hand, exile your graveyard and draw seven cards.

White - Rules Lawyer. City builders. Micro-Management games. The 'For the greater good' player

Blue - Statistics. Always looking to benefit from other players or control their moves. Games without luck or with minimal luck element, Catan is probably their hated game.

Black - The 'If I die, I am taking someone (the guy that I like least this game) down with me' gamer. Loves games that has a pvp element. Prefers the cutthroat and politic games. AGOT is probably up their alley.

Red - Dices. Excitement. The rush. Loves gamble mechanics where a wrong die roll will end you (or other gamble mechanics). Can sit through a game of Catan just to roll the dices. Plays through a game for end-games where the stakes gets increasingly higher. Plays hundred of games just to pull off the perfect ending turn they are looking for. Provoke players to get reactions for their own amusement.

Green - Resource management. Would love nothing more than to do their things. Angry bear, don't poke. Poke green players is like poking wild animals with a stick, they will bite back hard.

This spell deals 2 damage to target creature. If this is the third spell you've cast this turn, instead it deals 3 damage to target creature.

Exile the top two card of your library. You may play one of those cards this turn. If this is the first spell you've cast this turn, instead you may play two of those cards this turn.

This is what the D&D set could have been, but instead we got the Forgotten Realms. :(

Now I want to see a set that literally takes place in a living table top game with 5 rulers who are the players manipulating the world

I decided to just choose some games off the top of my head and see where I'd place them. What do you agree and disagree with?

GAME|COLORS |REASONS
Monopoly||greed, tax, government involvement, and property
Catan||society, trading, resource management, theft
Risk||war, global domination
Cards Against Humanity||cleverness, perversion, dark humor
Poker||gambling, deduction, bluffing, calculation, mind-games
Chess||calculation, royal courts
Fantasy Football||make-believe, sports, statistical analysis
Wingspan||nature, flying, engine-building
Trivial Pursuit||knowledge, history
D&D||storytelling, make-believe
Jenga||risk, chaos, schadenfreude
Pandemic||cooperation, healing, community

I don't really see the white in Monopoly at all. Monopoly seems monoblack.

I dunno, depends if we count the story or the gameplay. the fiction of Monopoly is very much in line with the Orzhov, but if we're just looking at the feeling of actually playing the game, the sheer randomness and cruelty of it is probably Rakdos if anything.

The games of monopoly I have played have been black with the occassional splash of red. Monoploy has been exiled in my house however.

Monopoly also starts as the white Landlord Game before it got stolen and commercialized. I was only thinking about the game as a game though, since it seems like the theme of the set is focused on playing the games.

The game is heavily black-leaning, but all of the government involvement parts of the game (taxes, mortgages, going to jail) give it a tinge of white for me. The other thing that makes it feel white is how much people have applied their own rules to the game over the years in order to make it less harsh (i.e. free parking cash dump). "If everyone suffers a little less now, we can all suffer longer together!"

Monopoly is very black objective through white means.

My approach to color tends toward minimal. Can Monopoly be represented well as just monoblack? Yes. The random impediments (luxury tax card, jail for rolling doubles, etc.) so the players don't really make the core of the game to me.

Thinking about themes for color pairings. This is my starting point.

COLORS|GAME TYPE
|Abstract Strategy
|Social Deduction
|Gambling
|Storytelling
|Cooperation
|Area Control
|Dexterity
|Engine Builder
|Party
|Quiz
