Ok, found a really good geek hierarchy list that amazingly includes (and ranks) sports geeks. I'm super happy to see that film geeks (who i identify with) rank higher than sports geeks lol

http://www.i-mockery.com/visionary/geek-hierarchy.php

I also think it brilliantly separates (widely) video game players with MMORPG players which I always felt were totally different (from the ones I've interacted with)

Sports being considered more geeky than video gamers is a little aggressive though lol. For sure video gamers are much more mainstream than they used to be. It's insanely popular and it's now socially acceptable for anyone of any age to be playing video games on their phone on the subway. But sports are much more society-centric and widely accepted as being 'normal behaviour'. You can recite season stats of any player or any team and no one bats an eye or would consider that weird

But you can't be openly discussing the latest Zelda game as small talk before a meeting or something

missing from the list are board gamers and CCG players (like Magic). Board gamers used to be near the top (probably right after sports/video games) and CCGs were mid-tier geek

You mean, who falls into more than one camp? I check three boxes (BIG tick on Film Geek, medium tick on Video Game geek, and small tick on sci-fi geek).

I barely qualify as a sci-fi geek anymore cuz I don't automatically watch every sci-fi movie or tv show, in fact i see very few of them, and I now read zero sci-fi books. In high school, i would have watched them all and read lots though. including short stories.

I think I barely qualify as video game geek now too cuz i play zero console or PC games. I only play 1 mobile game and it's only to pass the time.

But i still follow and watch movies closely.

omg Sixty, you've LARP'd?? I never would have had you as that. I slept with a Ren Faire girl for two weeks once but every time she invited me to go (and dress up), I declined. The only interesting thing in that relationship was getting to take off a corset (with all the strings and stuff), that was cool and hot.

But I think with these lists, it's not what you've done in the past, it's what you are now.

And most people can't tick more than one box cuz to achieve geek status, you really have to be all-in on the one category (that's why i identify as film geek only cuz it's the only one I devote a ton of time and energy too (not just now, but i'd say since 2006, when I start seeing about 50-60 movies a year (at least) in theatres cuz I gave up LOTR TCG in 2005.

----

Hey so the only thing I find remotely interesting in school shootings is the justice system. Since nothing seems to be working in society to deter these (this is the 45th school shooting this year alone in the States), the justice system seems like ALL we got in terms of possible future deterrent. So punishing the shooter doesn't seem to do anything (that doesn't mean they shouldn't be punished OBVIOUSLY, I hope I didn't have to say that), so when the justice system tries unique, different ways to approach award justice as a deterrent, I am VERY interested.

So this Georgia thing is interesting because it's HEAVILY holding the father accountable. First let's review quickly why they are holding the father more accountable this time:

In May 2023, law enforcement actually questionned the future shooter AND his father about online threats to commit a school shooting. The investigation was ultimately closed (I don't even know what law enforcement can/should do as a result of such an investigation). But one thing is for SURE, this should set off ALARM BELLS with the parents.

So what does the father do? In December 2023, as a gift, the father buys his son (Colt) an AR-style rifle. To me, this is INSANE. I would even say criminally insane.

Ok? So let's catch up now what the father is being charged with. He is facing a maximum sentence of 180 years in prison. This is actually MORE than what the son is facing. The son is facing life WITH parole.

What is the father charged with? Well, four counts of involuntary manslaughter (which makes perfect sense), but he's ALSO being charged with two counts of 2nd degree murder and 8 counts of cruelty to children. None of those other counts make any sense to me. 2nd degree murder seems like a real stretch and cruelty to children? What?

Anyway, i'm interested to see what happens. Going after the father could prove to be a decent deterrent. Since I'm at the point now that I believe the ONLY people in society that can avoid school shootings are parents. I don't think law enforcement can do anything, I don't think schools can do anything.

Per the web, bb.

“ Second-degree murder in Georgia occurs when someone causes the death of another human being while committing second-degree child cruelty, irrespective of malice. Therefore, if a person is abusing a child in any way that causes their death, regardless of intention, they have committed a second-degree murder.”

And

“ Any person commits the offense of cruelty to children in the second degree when such person with criminal negligence causes a child under the age of 18 cruel or excessive physical or mental pain.”

Seems cut and dry to me, guilty af.

_____________

Also, you are total sci-fi geek. Are you kidding? You still watch bad… Star Wars… tv… shows. lol

Thanks DJ! So I'm still not seeing how they can charge him with 2nd degree murder according to that definition.

For the sci-fi geek thing, if you only like the franchise, that's enough to make you a sci-fi geek? I figured to attain geekdom status, you have to be a huge fan of the category and are absorbing a ton of media in it. Like if I knew everything about Star Trek or Star Wars, then i'd absolutely be a sci-fi geek, but i don't. I'm only engaging with a subset of the stuff out there in those franchises.

....hmmm.. actually now that I think about it, i do consume a lot of Alien franchise stuff. Almost all of it (i've done graphic novels, movies, comics, video games...). Everything but the books and audio books (although 8 minutes ago, I was listening to snipets from the Alien III audiobook of the script that never got made into a movie, with Hicks and Bishop lol)

----

The father is going with a public defender, and didn't enter a plea or ask for bail. So i think he's basically given up (which is good). Can't believe he didn't ask for bail. With his kid in jail, he's not going anywhere.

The only question in this case that even needs to be asked by the court: did he cause the death by providing the weapon, when he knew his son had made threats. That will equal second degree murder, plain as day.

Criminal negligence causing pain is similarly clear.

The thing is, if he’s guilty of any, he’ll probably be found guilty of all.

edit: two things that annoy me in these situations:

1) calling every lightweight rifle an AR-15-style rifle (this is like calling every sedan a Honda-Accord-style vehicle). This is technically correct, but it's weird to me. They are M-16-style rifles, if anything. But mostly they are just lightweight rifles (just like Honda-Accord-style vehicles are just 4-door sedans).
2) the parents getting away without facing serious penalties.

I honestly believe parents need to be held accountable for the actions of their minor children, whenever those actions are reasonably preventable by the parent. In this case, the parent bought a gun for a known potential threat (that's not just failing to prevent, that's outright negligently enabling the situation). Seriously, he's lucky he isn't getting strung up by the parents of the victims. I say throw the book at him, and keep throwing the book at parents of these shooters until parents stop giving their crazy kids access to weapons (emphasis on crazy, because I have no concern about most kids having access to rifles - that said, most kids should still be under parental supervision for that access - guns shouldn't just be sitting in an unlocked closet somewhere, ffs).

So for me, at one point in life was a various number of geek.

- Starting at music geek, never touched an instrument but i had internet and a CD burner and I was going hard on Napster, building musical collections.

- That lead to film geek, as I was also building a very large film collection, I used to have hundreds of DVDs on this large folders, I watched a ton of stuff like lots...

- Then the obvious MTG geek, building decks, making. Guides, running tourneys, and deck building contests...

- Comic geek I had a small time into comics just when Civil War was releasing, and the whole Messiah stuff with Cable and Deathpool, I had a reasonable collection on my old Ipad... I wonder I I can get those back... It was amazing to read comics on the old Ipad.

- Otaku, this is probably the most stable, I brought my wife down this path and she always reminds me she was not an otaku geek before I meet her xD

LARP is the worst by a lot tho :P

PS: Never BO geek

LARP is the worst? Isn't that the only thing geeks do that actually involves physical activity? I'm guessing LARPers are often (not always) physically fit.

It's got to be cooler than 40-yr-olds reading comic books meant for teenagers. :P

jk, I really don't have an opinion on any of this ****.

**** man, our entire country started with a rebellion against a **** king. How are we this **** stupid as a country?

as far as I've always known, LARPers have always been the worst. Like, you wouldn't want to be around them at all.

Furries are probably the most physically fit

The other thing missing from that list are miniatures/figurines players like Warhammer. Of all the interactions you could ever hear between geeks, if you happen to overhear warhammer players, it was full blown cringe

(You know I'm just kidding. It's all kind of the same thing: ways people enjoy entertaining themselves. It's all better than getting blind drunk, and making an ass out of yourself, every weekend, while chasing girls you have no chance of ever landing, for example.)

I completely agree. But it's also just another way to have fun. I think everyone just has their own preferences.

Personally, I've done a bit of all of the above - except for LARPing, lol... those people are way too serious for my liking.

lol, Cucho, here is my all-time favourite thing that makes fun of LARP a bit.... It's also Rob Lowe's finest work ever.

https://www.tiktok.com/@8_milly/video/7 ... 98?lang=en

Go to 3:00 or so. It runs until 4:10 or so. So good.

I think I'm a music geek. Not sure if other music geeks would consider me one but I think I am.

I'm a video gamer

I'm a sports geek.

I used to be a sci fi geek, still kind of am.

I play role playing games.

I played WOW for 3 years. MMORPG geek.

I was in Middle school, Jr and high school band and jazz band, pretty sure that counts as band geek. Not listed; I was also a debate geek and for bonus points I was a Boy Scout. (Boy did I get bullied)

I've been to multiple Ren faires both as a child and an adult.

And finally; I LARPed for about a year and a half. Met one of my girl friends there. She smelt weird in the one place women shouldn't.

9, with bonus points.

LARP is just a bunch of adults hanging out after 11pm (some of them are probably drinking) acting like they are socially savvy and settling all conflicts (physical, social and political) by playing Rock/Paper/Scissors
