Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the 10th iteration of the Pro Tour YMTC, here on No Goblins Allowed. For those who aren't aware, or are perhaps just joining us, the standard format of the Pro Tour YMTC is to have open entry rounds, a wildcard round for persons who participated in open entry but didn't make the cut, and then an elimination finals of the top scorers and wildcard. We are now in the finals, where final and absolute victory will be decided after, let's be honest, far too long. Who shall take home glory in this edition of the Pro Tour? We shall see!

The Prompt

When it comes to Magic design, there are many forces at war with each other. Elegance and clarity war with the desire for more and better effects. Adherence to the rules of Magic as we know them conflicts with the desire to innovate. We've seen cards get wordier, while at the same time designers strive to find things that can be expressed simply but that don't yet exist in the game. This tension will never truly be resolved, and so I won't ask you to solve it in a grand sense. Rather, I want to see an execution that, in a particular instance, strives to balance these opposed forces.

Specifically, I want you to design, to make up, something new. It can be a supertype, card type, or even a subtype, but there has to be a word on your card's typeline that's never been on a typeline before, and it has to have some mechanical meaning. There are three other requirements that I must inflict, for the sake of the Grand Finale: First, your card should be intended to be legal in sanctioned formats, not specialty variants like Planechase or Archenemy. Second, your card needs to have a single card face (though the layout is free for you to express) and an ordinary Magic back. Third, your card should have at least one line of flavor text. You need to express your idea in such a way that there can be words to spare. It's something that Wizards often doesn't make possible with their new innovations: Planeswalkers, Sagas, and Classes lack flavor text due to their formatting, and Battles can only fit it on their back sides. Of course, there are also Adventures, and other typeline mechanics that do technically have room for a little fluff.

RAZOR AND CATO, THIS IS YOUR FINAL TASK:
Create a card with a brand new entry on its type line. The new Type line entry must be mechanically relevant. The card must be single-faced, eternal-legal, and have at least one line of flavor text.
.

Deadline is 9/3/2024 at 11:59pm Pacific Time However If all both entries are in and the contestants communicate to me they consider these entries finalized, this round is permitted to close early. Once the round closes, votes will be prepared, and the winner will be crowned the champion of Pro Tour YMTC X

I'm bumping this and will message the contestants.

I'm aware that this is a VERY hard prompt (though ironically we just got Rooms which might fit a little flavor text), if both contestants say they need more time I will bow to that.

Yeah I saw this thread I just have designer's block. This is a very hard prompt.

I do have an idea tho:

Shadow Tether :b:
Artifact - Shackles
Bind :1: (Attach this to target creature you don't control. Activate only as sorcery.)
Whenever bound creature attacks or blocks, its controller loses life equal to its power.
"Following the righteous path has a price. Are you willing to pay it?"
-Oszar, Citadel Counsel

Shackles are like equipment that you attach to creatures you don't control instead of creatures you control.

yeah this is a tricky one and I also got distracted with life stuff. I'll attempt to finish it on time but I don't really have an idea yet.

the most obvious thing to do, I think, is some sort of non-creature subtype with a mechanic attached. that's the vast majority of these sorts of things: there's only 4 real supertypes, all of which date back to the '90s, and while they've introduced a couple new types more recently, those are extremely hard. honestly I'm tempted to pull out Forgotten again because I do really enjoy that mechanic and it fits well here, but I assume that reusing an idea like that wouldn't be well-received. so let's try something else. I want it to be evocative, first and foremost. the thing that makes, say, Sagas and Classes interesting is that they have a clear relationship to the thing they represent. what else can do that? songs, maybe, but they feel similar to sagas. tools? treading on equip's toes but could be an alternate mechanism of some sort. ooh, maybe this:

Echoes of Aurelia-
Enchantment-Blessing
Creature boon (At the beginning of your upkeep, if this Blessing is unattached, you may tap an untapped, unblessed creature you control to attach this to it. A creature can only have one Blessing.)
Blessed creature gets +1/+0 and gains flying and vigilance.
With her last breath, she gave the Legion their final command: Win the Guildwar, at any cost.

possible solution to the aura card disadvantage problem, trading the mana costs of equipments for a more restrictive timing and usage protocol. note that, like equipments, Blessings do not die when they're unattached or when they creature they're on dies: the timing of them is meant to make that clear. might be hard to balance since you have fewer knobs to tweak than equipments to keep a recurring buff from running wild, which is why I added the tap thing: originally it was just gonna be an upkeep trigger but I wanted reattaching to not be a free decision and adding a mana cost was too close to just making equip again. boon is an equivalent keyword to enchant, in that it can carry different types or specifications for what the Blessing is allowed to bless: the debut would probably just be creatures, but I wanted to leave room for other options since it was more flavorfully flexible than equip so you could roll things like the equivalent of Fortifications into the same framework if you wanted. I was originally gonna make Boon the type, but I didn't have a good adjective for that so I switched to Blessing. and yeah, I think the card could probably be monowhite but I came up with the name first and then the Boros flavor worked so I rolled with it, and once you set a card in Ravnica you can just add a second color whenever you want basically. Aurelia's three keywords are flying, vigilance, and haste, but haste doesn't make sense with this card type so I skipped it.

Indeed so! It seems like we didn't need an extension, so I'll get the vote up
