Yeah I haven’t seen or heard from him since that near death so I assume he’s lost it some.

He is also what I recognize as a liberal. But evidently he’s not enough of liberal, and frankly (not that I’m making any real comparison here) nor am I.

I think if you had to stamp a political label on him, he’s a progressive liberal

That’s probably what I am as well although I flirt on the outskirts of libertarianism on some stuff

And now he's a progressive?!?!

What next? Are you going to tell me he's basically male AOC?

Whoops, maybe I’m wrong on that. I thought that was the term for his kinds of views

I thought that was what got him in trouble; that he doesn't agree with the current clinical approach to body dismorphism and the progressive side goes after any psychologist that dares to disagree with what's written in whatever that clinical holy bible of psychology terms is (I can't remember the name of the book).

If memory serves, there are three things that got him in heat:

1. Gender pay gap - he said that gender pay gap is not explainable simply by difference in gender. There are about 12 things that cause it and many of those are related to gender. But the fact that he was suggesting other factors causes pay gaps between the sexes other than the fact that they are different sexes drove many liberals NUTS.

2. Transgenderism - his background of psychology was put to use when he suggested that many cases of transgenderism is a form of identity crisis that will not be solved by changing genders and will lead to terrible results for the individual eventually

3. Pronouns - Canada had open forums to discuss the idea that misuse of pronouns would be punishable by law. Dr. Robert Patterson took gréât offence at this clear government outreach and lead the charge against it by speaking directly to the committee responsible for exploring this law. He was labeled rather quickly as transphobic even though absolute none of his arguments had anything to do with transgenderism. He firmly believe that the government should never have a say on what people are allowed to say (he’s completely right)

That 3rd one is the one that most lead to our earlier discussion, btw (but I'd guess 2 as well). The idea that what he says should be modified by some training, enforced by the government (by way of the courts), which is essentially designed to indoctrinate him... the whole thing is just absurd.

Lost in all of these discussions is that he's not some random guy spouting these ideas. He does, in fact, have the right kind of background to formulate these opinions by evaluating scientific literature (which he does do, right or wrong).

So like him or not, when you silence him you are actively silencing science (and making it clear that no consideration will be tolerated for opposing views). This is doubly bad, because its exactly what conservatives claim is happening (not just in this discussion, but in other discussions like Global Warming), and this whole situation lends tremendous (and very damaging) credence to conservative claims of conspiracies to promote certain scientific viewpoints over others. Honestly, the damage being done here goes WAY beyond any repercussions of the specific situation. This is exactly the kind of thing that leads people to stop believing in scientific consensus; and not-believing in some science (like vaccines, just for example) is flat out dangerous at he societal level (meaning, nobody cares if one or two people refuse to get vaccines, but it's blatantly dangerous for a society as a whole to refuse to get vaccines).

They should not be calling him a bigot, they should simply be stating that his opinion, or beliefs are in the minority and against current scientific consensus.

The current book is called The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR)

That's the one. Thanks DP.

I believe my original statement is correct and DJ/BB just got into more detail.

Tell me how it is. My wife and I are horror movie fans. But so is her Aunt, the one who makes movies. So she kidnaps my wife and takes her to horror movies she really wants to see and Aliens is her favorite franchise. Strong chance I don't see it till it comes out on HBO.

Yeah, my favourite franchise too, I’ll let you know!

Longlegs is in theatres right now and is supposed to be really good. Like a new Silence of the Lambs with Nick cage as Buffalo bill

Hey Vegas has Kamala favoured to win now. That’s pretty cool

Yeah cuz Vegas tends to « get it right » more than polls which makes sense cuz people could be betting a ton of money so the odds have to make some sense

Some polls have her ahead by 8 points but I’m not as fussy about polls. Just happy to see Vegas favouring a Kamala win

Mitch McConnell says Kamala Harris-Tim Walz win would be 'our worst nightmare'

he's worried that the dems world do the following:

Try to get rid of the filibuster

Create two new states: Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico

And pack the Supreme Court with liberal-leaning judges

Sounds like a pretty good list, where do we sign up?

I've never much liked McConnell, and these final years of his career are convincing me I was always right. I fully expected him to act as a foil to Trump, and he's really disappointed me in that regard. I could have forgiven a lot of political maneuvering, but not capitulation to someone I'm sure McConnell sees as a crazy person.
