I saw Deadpool v Wolverine last night. Pretty good buddy comedy with oodles and oodles of gratuitous violence.

Not quite as funny as the first 2 deadpool movies, some of the gags have just been used to many times. Movie makes fun of itself in spades. The multiverse thing especially gets a ton of flack thrown it's way. The boys really enjoyed it. The 4th wall jokes are still the best part. Characters making jokes about the actors, actors making jokes about the characters... it's all very funny

Even with all the leaks they managed to keep a few things still secret, at least from me. Maybe I just missed the spoiler.

Not surprising at all tbh; Austrians are well known for their acts of terrorism

Hey none of us talked about it but I liked how Stasis described our little island of misfit toys here.

Happy to be marooned here with all of you. Sort of a MST3K situation where the isolation makes us develop and evolve our own little culture and humour.

To the point that if someone new arrived, we’d probably just eat him in true Ewok and Chilean fashion

just flipped on the Olympics and Team USA is LOSING in Basketball to Serbia or something in the 3rd quarter by 15 points. Durant just scored his first points. What is going on. I don't know how any nation could even come close to beating team USA

I'm sure Sixty would know more about this, but let me take a stab.

The US is no longer the only nation that has high-level professional leagues. And, the NBA recruits people from all over the world now. Those two things combine to create a much richer pool of international talent in the Olympics than there used to be. For one thing, the Serbian team has NBA superstars on it. For another, the other Serbian players probably play in leagues that are just below the level of the NBA.

We just don't obviously outclass everyone else anymore.

The US is probably still the better team in most matchups, but it's not an automatic victory, ever, anymore, like it would have been two decades ago.

For example, Nikola Jokic is the top ranked player in the NBA according to this and other lists: https://nbarankings.theringer.com

HE plays for Serbia, not the US.

Number 2 plays for Slovenia
Number 3 plays for Greece

etc...............

Ah, yeah I assumed it’s still a total stompfest as basketball seems even more integral to American culture than hockey is to ours.

I guess that actually makes it better if it’s more competitive now.

Hey so Jordan Peterson lost his appeal against the order of psychologist who deemed his tweets are « degrading » which I don’t think they are at all

Anyway now he has to undergo social media training and I can’t even imagine how that will go

The smoking gun tweet:

Quote:
Peterson refers to a then-city councillor who uses they/them pronouns as an "appalling, self-righteous, moralizing thing."

That not only doesn’t seem bad at all but I bet it’s actually correct. I’ve seen people use the pronouns in such a fashion. It’s nuts

To be clear about something... The US team is all NBA players, none of the other teams are at that level.

I'm just saying it's a lot closer now, it's no longer men versus boys.

The Jordan Peterson thing is disgusting. I cannot imagine being forced to go to a re-education camp. I'd be the **** out of Canada, were I him.

Criminalizing thought is a very dangerous and very slippery slope.

Yeah I’m very worried about it too cuz the people re-educating him know less than he does

And, again, the most important thing is he didn’t say anything « degrading » at all, and that’s the charge. He says it will kill debate and people will not participate in open forums on issues around this (and eventually, to your point, other things too

While he had agreed to the training, he made a statement that made me happy. He said « this is not a hill I’m prepared to die on….. it’s a hill I intend to take back »

Amazing

—-

You make a good point too cuz they are basically criminalizing thought. He didn’t really say anything bad but they assume he thinks certain ways so they use the former to go after the latter, which is terrible

Who decides what thought (or for that matter speech) is acceptable, and, VERY IMPORTANTLY, what happens when that person changes?

The people in favor of stuff like this should be terrified of the precedent they are setting. They are creating the roadmap for evil, assuming this isn't already evil.

Thé first few steps are really the scariest cuz it feels the most wrong

Later on, we’d just become used to oppression and there will be a numbness

I remember not feeling ok that Trump was banned on Twitter but pretty quickly felt ok about it cuz he was inciting violence, ultimately. I dislike everything about him but I still resisted the « easy » feeling of being happy he was muzzled. It took the realization of Jan6 for me to be ok with him being denied a voice

So that wasn’t immediately easy for me but now THIS, where we don’t even have anything close to a bad or illegal act, and the court supports the forced training. It’s much scarier and upsetting.

I can’t even bring it with my more liberal friends or my mom cuz I’m worried they’ll both just instantly support it and will think I’m a bad person for feeling otherwise. I need to protect them by not having those conversations lol

Glad I can voice it here at least

Trump was, at least, skirting the edge of inciting violence. I don't think you can ever paint Peterson with that brush, no matter how hard you might want to.

There's a difference there, and it's not subtle. But yes, the Trump example is still apt.

You shouldn't be concerned with the people who want to silence Trump, you SHOULD however be concerned if they create the mechanisms to do so, and then HE gets control over those mechanisms (or someone like him).

Imagine a world where Trump gets to decide who gets to have speech, and/or what thoughts they get to have. That's the world I fear, and this is its precedent - even if we never get there.

_______________

You should always be concerned about the consequence of any law if the context of that law would change if a villain were to gain control.

I believe that anyone with any control of mechanisms like that is always a villain

A non-villain would immediately try to dismantle such controls and mechanisms but once governments and institutions gain power, they typically have a hard time letting it go

—-

I was just giving the trump example as something where even in a much more egregious case for it, I STILL had reservations if it’s the right thing to do and I don’t like the guy at all

To try and show that just cuz I like Dr Peterson doesn’t mean it’s colouring my view on the issue

Don't worry, I got the reason you brought it up, and I thought it was appropriate.

The thing about Trump, and I'm sure this is true, is that the people in favor of silencing his Twitter were making an assumption: The American people are too stupid to understand that Trump is saying dangerous things, and therefore unqualified. AND that they are too stupid to vote against him, because of the influence he was having via social media.

My biggest concern is that I probably agree with the assessment. And I'm worried that that leaves the US extremely vulnerable, even if I can't fully pinpoint what we are vulnerable to.

I think, if i may take a stab at trying to simplify it as much as possible, I think the American people are currently vulnerable to giving up many of their freedoms

We saw that they were ok with giving up much of their privacy and I think this is the natural next step

About that...Poll: Majority of Americans believe First Amendment goes TOO FAR in the rights it guarantees

Anyway now he has to undergo social media training and I can’t even imagine how that will go

If you ever end having to go when you get out you can tell the rest of us what to prepare for :V

The poll should have asked what percentage of Americans want their own personal speech limited.

I certainly want other people to shut up, all the damn time. But I'd never be okay with the government telling me what I can't say.

This may seem out of left field but if the government told Timh to shut up once a while, I would support it

Pretty much everything DJ said about Olympics basketball. USA hasn't won a medal since 2012 when it won gold. International basketball is such a huge sport now the playing field is very level.

Also, I believe Durant is injured, I think he rolled his ankle during practice right before Olympics started. LeBron is old and has always had stamina issues and is coming off a season where he tried everything he could to force the Lakers into the playoffs. I haven't watched any Olympics basketball yet. I've been watching Track n Field with what little time I have because I've been studying to make up time for when I was sick. BTW congrats on Canada's first gold in Men's Hammer Throw. He threw 84+ meters his first throw for Gold and never needed to throw again, in fact he Fouled his last 4 tosses.
