Good points, both of you.

Yeah I didn’t take your take as an affront, DJ, I was looking to elevate the conversation anyway. When I call them morons, I’m being super polite cuz I want to use another word

Yes I think it’s a depiction of the last supper too, but that scene gets depicted endlessly in media (TV, movies, art, you name it), and no one gets butt hurt. It’s also not widely accepted as something you’re not allowed to depict or emulate (as opposed to drawing Mohammed, as those French editorial cartoonists unfortunately learned :.(

I also didn’t watch btw. But I am being forced to watch all this blowout by all these people that are EASILY the bottom rung of intelligence on my “friends” list

Preferred Pronoun Set: I'm male, lol!
Look, I’m not saying this is right or wrong, because this statement goes beyond my opinion - which is, I can’t believe anyone actually watched the opening ceremony of the Olympics, and I certainly don’t care about what happened, or who it may have offended.

With that out of the way: there’s no way that display would have been any more acceptable to ancient Greeks than it was to the modern world. They wanted an excuse to have a bunch of men parade themselves around on stage (in a way that would definitely offend a LARGE portion of the people watching. Reminder this was broadcast all over the world - you think the Christian’s didn’t like it? lol, imagine what the Muslims thought), and they chose to defend it by claiming it had some historical relevance. It doesn’t.

Edit: IMO, Last Supper notwithstanding they knew the scene would offend people, and instead of pretending otherwise, they should own it. I would respect them more if they said, “yeah, we knew it would piss you off. Get over it and join the modern world.” That way people could be angry, and people could defend the decision, and everyone could have an honest conversation about what happened.

If they wanted to keep with the spirit of the ancient Olympics, the games would be a far more somber event. There would be no women competing. The events would be devoted to Zeus (definitely not Bacchus). Etc.

I don’t understand why Celine Dion sang. She’s Canadian and American. Seems to me France has a ton of amazing singers

They really don’t though. They have some great DJs and the weird blue dude. That’s about it.

the use of "liberal" in a negative sense is relatively new. Probably just a decade or two.

But "communist" has always been ULTRA negative in the States and, as a result, "socialist" is certainly adjacent.

Being from a socialist country, I used to get annoyed by that, but once I learned that the US is FUNDAMENTALLY conservative at its core, i took less offence cuz rightfully the idea of socialism SHOULD be slightly alien/offensive to an American. It's not in their country's DNA at all.

"Liberal" was already used negatively in the 90s, when I became politically aware, and I don't think it was new even then. People like Rush Limbaugh used it that way as early as 94 or so - and yes, he was a huge influence at that time with millions of active listeners to his daily radio show.

So it's more like 30 years, at least, as confirmed by my own personal experience, but I'd suspect longer.

"George Bush's presidential campaign, with his repeated references to Michael Dukakis as a "bigspending liberal" and an "ultra-liberal," from https://scholarship.richmond.edu/cgi/vi ... blications

so 80s at the very least maybe even all the way back to FDR's policies.

Oh it doesn’t matter if someone said it before Rush. He is the reason everyone says it. He weaponized it in a propaganda way

The book also blames Nixon for starting public distrust of government but I don’t see that connection to partisanship at all

There's always been distrust of government Nixon just brought it out into the open.

A British sports broadcaster got taken off air when he said this about the Australian Women's swim team:

Wow Canada women’s rugby got silver!! We got wrecked again by New Zealand (as we should) but I don’t understand how we beat Australia to get to finals. Way to go ladies

US beat Australia in spectacular fashion for the Bronze. Less than 2 mins left and Aus take the lead by 5. 14 seconds and we're still at our endzone; tackled, tossed to a woman who is immediately grabbed by 3 Aussies... she breaks free somehow and nobody's around... she runs the entire length of the field to win the game and Bronze.

Oh wow, Canada and the US grabbing silver and bronze in a sport neither country cares about at all? That’s hilarious and awesome. South Africa, Australia, Ireland and probably many others take it super seriously.

That Aussie game sounds awesome. They must have been demoralized after losing to our soft Canadian ladies

Whew! They found my paperwork so I'll get paid out on 08/09. I just moved another 10k over from my savings so we'll be fine.

I've been sick for 3 weeks. It started off as a sinus infection or walking pneumonia. A bunch of yellow phlegm but nothing that would slow a guy down. No fever, no fatigue. So I soldered on for a week and it cleared up. A day later it came back as a sore throat and a cough. That cleared up after about 5 days. 2 days later (last Saturday) I had the biggest appetite I had in weeks. Wife and I went out for brunch (no mimosa as I was recovering). I drove her 1 hour+ to her Aunt's and went home. Traffic was a bitch so I stopped in Venice to roller skate.

After 40 mins of rollerskating I was destroyed. Legs were jello, I was tired and even thinking about food upset me. Drive over to Inglewood to get the kid from Motorcycle school (he's back from Catalina) and I'm falling asleep in the car while waiting (10 mins tops). Get home and I've got a fever.

Aches so bad Sunday I drove myself self to the doc. I have an anti-viral now. Fever seems to have broke.

Pretty sure the money stress made this worse than it had to be.

Also the zero rest after you got better. Lots of people that died of covid had that pattern. They started feeling better for a day and they went nuts, got hit much harder with it and succumbed. You gotta rest at least 1-2 days after you get better or you’re playing with fire :(

Also, roller skating is ghey as fock

Glad you’re getting paid! Hope that reduces the stress somewhat and you still have lots of savings to take you to the next job

I saw the opening the other day, noy live so I could skip the boring parts, I thought 2 things, first it was a very cool openong event, loved the metal band and the whole liberty part, second it diversity was way over represented.

The whole debacle on christianity is beyond absurd.
There was nothing offensive about it.

I would probably agree with you Cucho, except for one thing: I don’t think the people who are saying they are offended are faking it. I also think that there’s a reason why some advertisers are pulling out.

Personally, and I think I’ve made this clear, I don’t care that much, other than it’s an interesting discussion.

I think people offended by it should really think why they are offended in a way that they don't spit sexual discrimination, I´m not looking really but I dont think there's an actual reason based on respect.

I don’t think they think it was sacrilegious as much as they feel persecuted for being christians and using this as their hill to die on (for now, anyway). Advertisers pull out only for business reasons, there’s nothing moral or immoral in their judgment, so I wouldn’t read into stuff that is only motivated by money

Bb… other than they don’t want their brand associated with that, because people will not like the association.

It’s a pure money decision, I agree, but there’s a real reason they are worried about the money situation.

Right but it’s only motivated by money, it doesn’t mean that the Christian lobby is right to condemn the Olympics

I think it’s an important distinction

Advertisers playing it safe. Not a hill worth dying on. They couldn’t give a rat’s ass about Christians of any other religious group. No reason to lose sales over a bunch of snowflakes

Oh I see. Yeah, I 100% agree with that take. Advertisers are absolutely not taking a position on the discussion.

Yeah that’s what I was trying to get across because if you go by headlines, the media and news outlets always take those stories like the company is making a statement

When in actuality, they’re making a very basic risk management decision

Of course. I was only bringing it up to point out the size of the outrage. To be clear, I didn’t intend to imply that corporations agree that the outrage is valid. <- that’s not a thing I’d generally think, or say, unless the CEO is an idiot (Elon Musk for example).

Gotcha, good discussion!

As a reward, enjoy this short Jomboy breakdown. I absolutely love the lip reading voiceover he does of the upset kid lol
