and if Democracy loses? what then?

what if Democracy looks like it's going to lose? what then?

Where does the line get drawn?

Is it only AFTER a dictator seizes power?

If a dictator is elected through a democratic process, he is not a dictator

I think you can only take serious action if the elected official then breaks down the democratic process once in power

Until then, benefit of the doubt

I’d make the same argument for Hitler too, btw

Fear is not a reasonable reason

Democracy as we know it, has liberal aspects that keeps power in check.

The relativization of Trump attacks of Democracy are not the core of what I perceive as your ideologic stands, liberalism and we have lots in common on that ground.

The guy made a clear statement, you can stop with the whataboutism, we're talking about Trump

I am talking about Trump. What whataboutism? (Actually, I'm confused, and I'm not sure what you mean here)

Btw, Democracy doesn't have the best track record when dealing with dictators, or potential dictators. They are often elected - the first time. The hard part is un-electing them. Plus, nowadays we have the modern version where they hold 'elections' but the elections are total nonsense - Russia for example.

Sorry the page break threw me off; you were responding to cucho, I took you out of context.

Got it, that makes more sense. I felt like I was discussing in good faith, I’m glad I wasn’t too far from correct.

I feel like the status "dictator" is determined by what you do while in office, not how you got there.

Yeah, sorry about that DJ. "Where does the line get drawn?" usually looks like whataboutism to me.

Bb has a point, imo. Putin is elected every time, I don’t think he’s ever lost. Don’t get me wrong, he kills and imprisons he political opponents, and any detractors, but in the end he always wins, so he’s not a dictator. He’s demonstrably a democratically elected leader of a democracy.

Yeah Russia isn’t a dictatorship

There are other ways to maintain power without being a dictator

And you don’t have to be an “evil” country to dabble in those “other ways”

For instance, gerrymandering is one type of activity.

I'm sure at least one of you is joking. This is what we in Oklahoma refer to as Yanking my Chain

I’m finally watching RICHARD JEWELL which I’ve wanted to see for a while but it’s on tv so all the swears are cut out. It’s maddening to watch

Yeah, I mean killing your political opponents, and jailing the media is totally acceptable so long as the result is winning the election. I see no difference between that a drawing maps to benefit elections. It’s all the same thing, right?

DJ, they’re both immoral acts to varying degrees

Any act, violent or non violent, designed to manipulate and circumvent a democratic process is bad

The fact that some people murder Opponents doesn’t make gerrymandering an okay thing to do. That’s juvenile thinking

——

Sixty! I just watched that! It was hard to tell who the cutest of the three was but it certainly wasn’t the American lol

Congrats on your bronze btw. You guys are gonna kill us, as usual, in medal count

The liberal parts of a Democracy are ded in Rusia, separation of powers, pluralism, independent media... You should be more worried about holding amd defending those aspects of Democracy, the limits it puts to power and respect of human and civil rights.

Trump is against all that, and attacks it on a regular basis.

He is eroding your Democracy not just based on populism that is a real threat in democratic systems, but that threat must be keept in check by the liberal aspects of modern Democracy.

Also a democracy, obviously. He’s just more popular than our politicians.

@BB, I’m going out on a limb here, and at the risk of sounding juvenile, I’m just going to posit that murdering your opponents is slightly worse than gerrymandering.

Yes, much worse. Not Sure what rational person wouldn’t think that.

——-

Sixty, you guys just got silver in the relay and we finished FOURTH. That’s gotta be the worst possible position to finish. I’d rather finish 175th

I totally agree. It’s almost irrational to even compare the two things.
