I'm watching U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle testifying on the attempted assassination of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump before the House Oversight and Accountability Committee. I never realized how young AOC sounded until she started speaking at the hearing.

Also, if I were the Director , I would be like "I'd like to remind the honorable representative that The Warren Commission took ten months before finally submitting its report to the President." and "I'd like to point out to the honorable representative that if every speech was stopped due to a suspicious person, they would never give one."

AOC is a clown. I'm not a fan of AOC, lol.

The Director can't say any of that, though, or at least I don't think so (the former is the wrong kind of combative, and the latter might give away way too much information about what they know or don't know). She's volunteering less than they can find on TV or Youtube... What she should, instead, say (along the same lines as your statement), is something like: "Unlike Youtube or the Press you will hold me accountable if I get important details wrong. Getting things right takes time, and I intend to get things right."

I mean half of her answers are "I can't/won't answer that in an open forum" and "I'd refer you to the FBI for the criminal investigation" and arguing over the meaning/context of the word/phrase "suspicious person" vs an actual "threat". The other amusing thing is half of the Dems have pointed out that other mass shootings don't get hearings/gun safety measures. lauren boebert is going to put in motion the paper work to require Cheatle to turn over her personal phone to check for any encrypted messages.

The overall feeling however is that Cheatle should resign.

EDIT: And others are actually asking decent questions to understand how the SS works without touching on anything that would compromise their mission.

Allowing her to resign is also insane. She should almost certainly get the axe.

AOC

AOC has a sound to her voice that is no fault of her own. i both like her and dislike her (I mostly like her, though) but I would try to resist the urge to judge her based on the sound of her voice.

Also, she's young. That's her appeal and in many ways a breath of fresh air in that arena which is known for being stoic and stuffy.


SS Director

On this director stuff, i have mixed feelings here too. i think Biden made a HUGE mistake by, as a knee-jerk reaction to the shooting, showing support and faith in her ability. Let's call a spade a spade here, this is by far the closest an assassin has come since the Reagan attempt which was... 40 years ago?!?! So if something happened that was this dangerous and hasn't happened in 40 years, heads should roll. Biden, at the time, was the opposing candidate for the presidency to the assassin's target. I think he should have fired those responsible (including the director cuz the buck stops there), and that would actually be a good look for Biden. It's completely unacceptable that someone walking around with a range finder was allowed to climb on top of a nearby structure. Taxi Driver actually did a decent job showing what the SS does ahead of an event (and they do a LOT more than that).

so my Liberal friends on FB are all happy Biden endorsed Harris (again, i like Harris) but I really think it's a faux pas of Biden to endorse her ahead of the convention. It really bothers me, and it bothers me even more than my liberal friends don't understand why. "Why wouldn't he endorse her? He picked her as his VP". UGGGHHHHHH... president doesn't get to pick the nominee. This is actually damaging to the Dem's chances of winning White House IF the party chooses another.

Republicans are also making a weird move (i'm guessing it's to control the news cycle) by going after Biden and trying to unseat him as president. He's 100% a lame duck president at this point and going after him doesn't accomplish much.

Endorse is not the same a pick. You are overreacting. And I don't think it will have any impact if the party chooses another.

Biden SHOULD step down. If he's not capable of running for the job, he's not capable of having the job. They are right.

Plus, let's not underestimate the opportunity. 1) Kamala would be the first female President. 2) This late in the Presidency, she could still run two more times. 3) in the event that she doesn't become the party choice, this would be one hell of a consolation prize.

I now usually just say a rather combative thing, "are you incapable of making an argument or discussing this? your response is juvenile. We're talking about X. You want to talk about Y, I'm happy to talk about Y later/after, do you have anything you'd like to say about X?"

I've tried to stop using the word "strawman" too cuz it's too overused but it's also a very popular way of arguing which is ridiculous.


also, this is one of the many many reasons I hate discussing individuals cuz it always usually illicits comparatives to other individuals (like you're experiencing lol). And it's just such a SMALL conversation as a result.

Like my discussion of Biden endorsing Harris is neither a discussion about Biden nor Harris. I'm TRYING (unsuccessfully) to talk about POTUS's role and the weight of that station, and the grace that should be forever associated with it. By moving ahead of his own party's choice, i find it sours the role of the office of the president somewhat. Making the individual larger than the institution which should never happen. POTUS will automatically endorse whoever his/her party chooses which makes the endorsement somewhat stupid anyway, lol.
