I’m by no means great at reading people, but even I knew Biden was in bad shape. How the hell did they miss it? It was plain as day. Do they not watch the news? That’s about equivalent to a Republican being surprised to find out that Trump says controversial things.

That, even if true, would excuse nothing. It’s not even about his capabilities, which I doubt, it’s about the public perception of his capabilities. And that perception has never been great, is definitely bad now, and will never recover.

He hasn’t passed a cognitive test that anyone has seen. It’s one of the republican talking points, for him to take one and prove it

As far as people not noticing: motivated reasoning is a powerful drug and it’s easy to overlook something you don’t want to believe, especially if your tribe is telling you don’t worry about it it’s fine

There’s actually a West Wing episode on this where the republicans are hiding the medical condition of a very old Supreme Court Justice so the Democratic president doesn’t replace him

I think that quite a bit of it came down to trying to not turn him into a lame duck president to early... and then they waited to long. This really should have been put off until about May... but they missed their opportunity

It would have been a horrible plan to have said, mid term, the sitting president is declining, we need a new nominee for 2 years from now. Would have completely cut him off at the knees. Ukraine and Israel would be different and domestic policy would be more of a mess than it is

The ideal situation (and responsible thing to do) would have been for Biden to recognize his own limitations and announce he wouldn’t be seeking a 2nd term in time for the primaries but here we are
