Yes the media isn't helping AT ALL, granted. I would argue the Republicans have weaponized it better though.

Social media also puts people into their corners with mostly echos and very little challenges or outside-the-box thinking

Darkstar, while I agree that it's been MORE right-wing centric the death threats and such (more gun usage there too, which is something that surprisingly hasn't come up at all in all the talk about the shooter), I think the only path forward is for both sides to align that it's unacceptable and to NOT point fingers at each other cuz there's nothing to be gained from that.

I mean Trump isn't taking responsibility for the people that stormed the capitol even though he pretty directly called for it himself. So when it's THAT direct and no accountability is placed, I don't think we'll see anything at all for people "talking tough" (i'm minimizing it here intentionally)

If it was a lone gunman who had made his plans then it's over. If there were any conspirators, handlers or supporters then they absolutely have to be pursued and punished accordingly. To not do so emboldens others to pursue a similar course of action.

yes of course, and again I'm saying that the legal/justice system should be 100% interested in every single aspect of the shooter's life / motive / accomplices, etc.

i'm saying the public should not. It just invites problems/escalation/division/fear/anger UNLESS the person is a total basket case which is less and less likely these days

Yeah that type of stuff is beyond terrible and is on par with republicans supporting (in one way or another) the Jan6 storming of the Capitol

The Jess person should get fired and the house rep should apologize for her staffers behaviour

we want to know cuz we're obsessed with this stuff. It will matter to the people it should matter to. As a society, it's crazy how focused we get on stuff that doesn't matter but because it's violent, it's insanely interesting to everyone (all those murderer docs on the streaming services)

it doesn't lead to good things. Just more and more normalization of violent acts and a SURE FOCKING FIRE WAY TO BECOME A CELEBRITY FOR LIFE

It feels like your projecting a little here, we get that you're very non-violent unless it's in movies/games. So I have to ask why were you so into playing Grand Theft Auto Five? If the story hadn't been about criminals committing a wide ranging array of crimes, but had been about lawyers doing everything legally would you have played?

As for normalizing violent acts...we've already done that. We've been like that for years only shocked by the scale/the victims. When a mass shooting happens again we'll go right back to "why did the shooter do it?"

So the reasons why people are like "we gotta know" along with being into true crime like Ted Bundy et al is because evil fascinates us and we are simply fascinated by aberrant behavior and the many paths that twisted perceptions can take. Lastly, because we can’t look away from a “trainwreck.”

Ouf, the more I read Timh’s article, the more upset/disheartened I get

When a staffer says something , who cares. They’re basically like us just saying random crap on social media. They should lose their job if they work in politics/government and that’s it. But elected officials downplaying an attempted assassination, and the murder of an innocent person… that’s super bad. It really paints America as a nation of enemies

The other reason we've got to know is because this will be politicized to death, so knowing the truth, absent the politics, is important.

There are literally Republicans making claims that the Democrats (note they don't mean a lone gunman) tried to assassinate Trump in order to win an election they otherwise would lose.

'A Lie Can Travel Halfway Around the World While the Truth Is Putting On Its Shoes"

But if you don't know the truth, then the lie isn't even rebuttable.

yeah, you're right. I keep thinking that those types are just going to stick to their narrative regardless of the truth, but yeah it's important that the truth be out there at least.

i'm writing up some quarterly commentary on merger arbitrage in North America and we're noticing that in the States, spreads have priced in a Trump victory now. ouf...

At this stage I think that Trump has a very strong chance of winning, to the point where even if the dems had Obama on the other side, Obama would likely lose, Biden has no chance whatsoever. This whole situation has evolved into avery different animal and will probably have a greater impact on the U.S. than on the rest of the world.

Other democratic nations have managed to prevent the rise of similar leaders, but at this stage it seems to me that whats next will be particularly challenging and painful for the U.S.

Trump’s leadership is built on division and polarization, in orders of magnitude I have never seen in a Dem leadership. The last decade all I can see in the US is a nation turnong against itself.

On the other hand the U.S.’s international reputation will probably take a mortal wound after Biden.

If Trump wins and the Republicans control the Senate, the situation could escalate even further, into true right wing populism in a scale I hadn’t considered before this event.

However, the fact that Trump is quite old gives me a small glimmer of hope.

Barney, I think you are viewing this situation based on what you believe should happen, rather than what is actually happening and what is likely to occur next. Unfortunately, in the current U.S. political climate, truth and what is right seem to have taken a backseat. And from the distant small country that is Chile things look like ****.

I think you’re right, Cucho buddy. Very astute observation

I think we’re gonna need one of those coûntdown clocks from Watchmen to assess how far we are from the end of all things (nine minutes to midnight, etc). Cuz at some point, we’re going to miss the opportunity to all get together and screw each others brains out. Right, Timh??

Trump is fairly liberal for a Republican. He had a rally when he was pres (or when he ran before) where he had a crowd of republicans cheering the Pride flag, which is a pretty remarkable achievement. Frankly I’d be more concerned if Repubs controlled the house and senate and he died in office during his term. Ironically for how divisive a figure he is politically I think he’s a bit of a moderating force for the far right of republican side. Everyone is abuzz about the project 2025 thing but I suspect it has more legs without Trump if Repubs control everything

@Barney we can still screw each others brains out in hell

Decided to start BEEF. I like it so far. Walking Dead’s Glenn is the main and he’s almost unrecognizable which is a credit to his acting.

Oh no!!! I just found out Richard Simmons, my beloved avatar for just over two decades, died two days ago :.(

Loved that guy

Of course I’m not very surprised by this since most people don’t actually have principled stances and will gleefully abandon them as soon as becomes advantageous to do so - but the speed at which many of the exact same people on the right who railed against Cancel Culture when the left had complete cultural control have flipped on a dime and are now rabidly tagging employers or sponsors of non-governmental people (aka normal civilians) who made insensitive comments about the Trump assassination attempt on social media in attempts to Cancel them is truly dizzying

I say burn them at the stake!

It's 1692 right? right?..

I keep getting confused on the year. But regardless, if we're doomed to repeat history, let it at least be really obviously bad history so that future historians can laugh at how stupid our society was.

I'm kind of hoping they bring back the inquisition... It's on my let's watch the world burn bingo card.

As a side note: I **** love the fact that there's sooooo much misinformation online. Those cocky historians - I hope you're reading this, future **** heads - will have the hardest time figuring out what's actually happening in our society, despite the fact that basically every single thing that happens is posted/published somewhere online.

It is the same old **** in modern form and nobody wants to be the witch but everyone is dying to be the witch hunter, just give them the opportunity and they’ll run out the torches

And ya the misinfo is insane. If I didn’t see it in a video that I can tell isn’t deceptively edited and there aren’t well documented sources I’m holding it in a quantum state of maybe real prob fake. And with AI advances I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be able to trust what I see with my eyes ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

so, they also found two IEDs in the shooter's car and one in his home. And the ONLY reason why Trump got his ear shot instead of his head was because he turned his head to look at a Jumbotron,
