Roberts said it doesn’t grant absolute immunity and that Trump asserted a far broader immunity than the one they recognized with their ruling. He could be impeached and then tried for crime; the counter argument being presidents don’t have just authority to assassinate political rivals

A lot of Americans hated Reagan, both before and after.
JFK was similarly not loved, by many, and has faced many attacks on his legacy.
And, well, Trump will surely erode whatever goodwill he currently has in the very near future.

For one thing, it is becoming evident that he was not shot, it's not confirmed yet, but I think it will be confirmed. That fact alone, wrongly or rightly, will anger many people against him. There's a huge difference between shot at, and shot, and people will make that distinction, and ask why the narrative from Trump's inner circle made false statements and claims.

For another, and this is not Trump's fault (at least not yet), Republicans are feeding each other the narrative that the shooter was a liberal, out to end Trump's candidacy. That is also proving to be likely false, but the memes are already in full force, with things like "Missed Me" on the title, and non-memes (at least that I'm seeing) with people calling Liberals outright villains. The pushback on this narrative will come, and it won't be pretty.

It goes somewhat deeper than that, IMO, BB. There's also the questions about the failures of the Secret Service. There's a huge difference, within that discussion, between Trump was shot, and Trump was hit by some debris caused by a bullet that could never have hit him directly.

And in the news now, it sounds like the Secret Service did, in fact, **** up. So that interesting discussion is probably over. They set that building out of the boundary area, they supposedly did not check it, and it did have line of sight (note: it has been erroneously reported that the building was 500 yards away, ~500 meters, but it was more like 150 yards; that is well within range for a competent marksman). Wowza, someone is going to get in serious trouble over this.

Obviously they would only claim responsibility if it was successful and will use the confusion of a failed attempt to further propaganda in another way.
