ffFFFF YOU BEAT ME TO IT. DAMMIT.

This makes a lot of sense. Everyone's scrambling right now to find themselves a competitor to the Marvel Movie Universe (and arguably Middle Earth). If there was ever a time when a Magic movie could happen, it's absolutely now.

Will they screw it up?

Oh, absolutely.

I'll believe that this film is happening AT ALL when I see a trailer for it and not a moment sooner, in fact. There's just too much that can go wrong on the way.

But still, it makes sense that they're giving this a try.

They could just do a film version of Magic: The Musical...

Why must you remind me of how behind I am?!?

But I wonder if they're going to try to convert an existing story (comic, novel, whatever) into a movie, or make a new one?

Does the absence of an Innistrad novel say anything?

I'm with keeper, not surprised. WoW's movie has been picking up steam after years of speculation. And popular geek things movies have been doing well. Add to that Magic's pervasiveness in the old guard of geek culture and a resurgent interest of the masses in fantasy it just makes sense.

Will it be what we want? Likely not. Will it be good? It could go either way.

It could get stuck and die in the design phase, like so very much.
It could come out and be really, genuinely awful. "Physically painful to watch" levels of awful, but this is a special kind of bad
It could come out and be hilariously bad, like Dungeons & Dragons did.
It could come out and be utterly forgettable, like Golden Compass
Or it could come out and blow everybody away by making an epic film version of Brothers' War or Agents of Artifice, setting up a long-running series.

While the Brothers' War would be awesome, I think if they do it, they will almost undoubtedly go with the main Neo-walkers. Hasbro likely won't allow them to pass up an opportunity for character tie-ins, and they've been pretty clear that the Neo-Walkers are the face of the franchise. If they do make a Magic movie, and it doesn't have Jace or Chandra, I would be thoroughly surprised. Not displeased, mind you, just surprised.

Of course, they could just retell Karona's story...

(quickly ducks out of the way.)

I would forgive any and everything if they have a suitable dreamy guy play Venser with the sideburns.

That may be their best course of action, because they can't screw anything up and there is nowhere to go but up.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Tommy Wiseau as Sarkhan Vol. I don't care about the plot - just have him be a cameo in there somewhere. Even if it don't make sense.

And so people say to me, "How do I know if a word is real?" You know, anyone who's read a children's book knows that love makes things real. If you love a word, use it! That makes it real. Being in the dictionary is an artificial distinction; it doesn't make the word any more real than any other word. If you love a word, it becomes real.

Because it would tear me apart to have that utter wastrel **** to be played by the magnificent Tennant.
And then you would two of me, driven to ravage the land in an effort to purge everything before we try to strangle each other.

You just know they're going to troll us and have it star Jace, be really bad, and make Jace look even worse than he already does in terms of personality, forethought, and initiative.

On the other hand, I'm getting these images in my head of Jonny Depp as Sharkan Vol, Amanda Tapping (makeup used to look somewhat younger or time-travel earlier version of her) as Liliana Vess, Angelina Jolie as Elspeth Tirel, Kanye West as Koth of the Hammer, Keanu Reaves as a really odd Venser, Emma Watson as Nissa Revane, Bret Spiner voicing Karn, Orlando Bloom playing Tezzeret the Seeker, and Jordan Sidfield playing Jace Beleren.

It was really hard to pick someone for Jace... even thought of suggesting myself, but I've got the wrong eyes and look more like the Architect of Thought version, plus my voice doesn't match his character. I think I might be able to play Kallist if they did an Agents of Artifice movie, as I look a lot like Jordan Sidfield and Jace, although I'm by no means a professional actor, I've just done some youtube voice-work for a comedy thing and did some school plays in high-school, and I've been told I'd be a good actor (I'm more into engineering though). ((As you can guess, my family is really into Theatre stuff, and lives in California))

Oscar-worthy, emotionally profound rendition of Planeswalker, please! Come on, let's do this thing.

(ha ha ha it's nice to dream sometimes ha ha ha [sob])

I wanna say Agents is the logical starting point but it's not that actiony of a book, and Jace isn't that likable of a charaoh wait he's a white dude with Conflicted Feelings nevermind Hollywood will be all over that. I mean nothing against Jace, or Ari's great rendition of him, but he's kind of eye-rollingly marketable. Thank god Ari wrote such a solid story; they'll at least have something strong to work from to keep him from being insufferable.

God help us if whoever writes Jace's flavor text gets involved though. God help us all.

Oh man, what if they did Scars of Mirrodin but wrote it well, and we could just declare the movie canon? Wouldn't that be lovely?

Am I the only one who remembers all the Venser = The Doctor stuff from when the art was first released?

No, but as I have nobody around to kick until they fall silent, I'm choosing not to mention it.

I've just seen this on reddit.

I think Szat sums up the possibilities pretty well, but without knowing who's doing what I'm predicting it will be bad with around 60% of confidence. When we get at least a director or a writer, I'll start getting more optimistic (or more pessimistic, depending on how it turns out).

I'm going to assume they're going to be using existing characters. People will be pretty disappointed if, say, Jace or Chandra doesn't feature in it and if you're going to put them in, you might as well go all the way.

If I were in charge, I'd probably at least try and copy the "Marvel Cinematic Universe"-model of doing a couple of single-character movies resulting in a bigger cross-over movie. If they play it right, we could be watching "Zendikar's Last Stand" at the same time as that set comes out.

But there are so many ways they can do this wrong...
