Nice story. Elphimas and Alessa are an interesting match-up, both for how their abilities overlap and how they diverge. The fact that their personalities seem so radically different is interesting as well, especially in the context of Elphimas sort of reaching out to here, more or less. It is also telling that, unlike Nasperge, Elphimas does not really make a direct attempt to get through to Alessa, but rather just tries to explain themself in a way, trying to give her something to latch on to, should she decide to.

Thanks for posting!

Thanks for reading and commenting!

The wording of a certain line was inspired by this affirmation (which connects with the title of Elphimas' first canon story) that puts into words something very important to me. Sometimes you lack the strength to reach for a helping hand, or the serenity to take advice. Sometimes you need to feel close to someone, to be seen/heard for what you are, in order to gain that strength, to reach that serenity. Elphimas knows this, and they know Nasperge has reached for Alessa many times. They don't know Alessa as well as Nas, and they are not experienced in reaching to traumatized teens, so they choose to put themselves out there, and give Alessa the chance to meet them on her own terms. It may be distant, awkward, frail, as she herself points out, but it's still a moment of comfort I suspect Alessa sorely needs.

(I would, of course, love to write the next step of Alessa's journey, but I doubt I will - especially without help)

PS: I'm also glad that I was able to show some backstory of both Jack and Elphimas in my last few entries for the thread.

Greetings, M:EMers!

Halloween is here again, and that means it's time for another Raven Halloween-themed story. This tradition started ten long years ago when I posted "Screams in the Dark," a story about Nasperge meeting a very strange frog. The next year, I celebrated 2015's Halloween by crafting the poem "Beyond the Shadows," which featured the tortured Eidemtel. In 2016, I wrote about the harpy planeswalker Hanara in the short story, "Some Enchanted Evening." 2017 saw a spooky, haunted mansion in "Daneera and the Domovoi." I wrote another poem in 2018 called "Necromancer's Lament," and in 2019, I wrote two Halloween pieces, a short story called "Dyson's Fear" and a poem entitled "Mass of Ghouls." In 2020, the poem "Lanterns in the Night" rang in the day. 2021 saw Gale face her own personal ghosts in "Ghosts in the Ocean," and 2022 saw the completion of the long-in-the-making Jakkard tale "Night Train to World's End." And finally, last year I wrote another poem, this one called "The Ones Who Stand Around the Tree."

This year, as you undoubtedly guessed considering the thread I am posting this in, I am setting my Halloween tale in the M:EM High School. So, I hope you all enjoy a really bad day at school!

Happy Halloween, all!

Thanks, Huey! I hope all the irl stuff is going well, and I look forward to hearing what you have to say about this story whenever you're able to get to it.

As for continuing the tradition, it very nearly didn't happen. For about a month or more before Halloween, I kept trying to think of Halloween-themed stories I could do, and I came up with four or five of them, but none of them ever really got off the ground. I kind of liked them, but not enough to really get through the story. Then, about three days before Halloween, I struck this idea, and as I was thinking through the story, I liked it more and more, and so I went with it.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy!
