So, I'm currently fretting over losing my job. I am 75% sure I'm being more paranoid than anything, but it's been probably 3/5ths of my current stressors.

Outside that, in a better note, my copy of Oban Star Racers finally arrived after about 6 months of waiting. A series created by the grandson of Gustave Eiffel.

Oh, man, do I know that feeling. Higher Ed in general is not doing well financially, and while my school is doing alright for the most part, I live in sort of constant fear that I'm going to get cut. Not only am I the newest and youngest member of my department, I'm also the only one without tenure (which doesn't mean what most people think it does anyway, at least at this school, although I am still the easiest to get rid of if they wanted to). And with enrollment as low as it's been, the decision could very easily be made to not bring me back.

Anyway, I hope things go the way you want them to with your employment concerns!

It's a series that originally came out in 2007 as a coproduction between a french company and a japanese studio based on a short released in like 2003. Disney had a hand in some of the financing, so after the initial run, they basically left it to die in obscurity, but after like 15 years or so the rights finally expired and the original creator could purchase the property outright, and as it was a MAJOR passion project of his that he had to fight constantly over the direction of, it feels really fulfilling that he finally got to actually own the rights to his work.
One of the first things he did was kickstart a physical release and remaster for the series.

And as a weird sort of interesting bit, the series was the work of the grandson of Gustave Eiffel, the man who built the Eiffel Tower. Which isn't particularly relevant to the series outside of a fascinating bit of lineage. I just find it really neat.

That's really cool. I like those few times when the little guy (so to speak) can win.

Ironically, I recently got my hands on a show from my childhood that was sort of a sticking point for me. It was one of those shows that I used to vaguely describe to people (because I barely remembered anything about it) and so nobody believed that it existed. I finally found out what the show was called about a decade ago, and then I got the dvd set about a month ago. I haven't actually sat down to watch it yet, partly because the semester is wrapping up and I'm busy, and partly because I don't want to be disappointed if it doesn't live up to my literally decades-long search...

Considering the veritable encyclopedia of media (or, encyclomedia if you will) of stuff from my childhood, I'm curious what it is you picked up.
Because I've been methodically repurchasing most of my childhood as best I can for the better part of 20 years now.

Oh yeah, vaguely remembered nostalgia is always a gamble.

Sorry I'm not around much right now, by the way. Turns out working there days a week while finishing my degree and also raising three children leaves very little energy for other things. What little free time I have is usually spent on watching shows with my wife (we're almost done with Star Trek TNG), and my weekly RPG game. When I'm done with my final paper and have a more stable job things should get better. (I'm currently on a 35-minute commute, which might not sounds like much, but when I have to be at work before 8:30 and also get my daughters to school before I go, it gets rough some mornings)

It is The Mysterious Cities of Gold. All I remembered of it was that there were a boy and girl, each with half of a mysterious pendant, that supposedly unlocked the golden city, and I (mis)remembered a giant, mechanical, golden eagle (it's a condor, not an eagle, incidentally).

I clearly watched it at least a little bit as a kid, but from that admittedly vague description (I had not known the name at this point) nobody else remembered it, including my sisters, who very likely would have watched it with me.


Another show I used to watch as a kid was called Math Net, which was a Dragnet parody. I found some of the complied episodes on YouTube about a month ago, and I watched the first one. Considering it was geared toward children and likely had a miniscule budget, I thought it actually sort of held up, so I'm hopeful that The Mysterious Cities of Gold will, too.


Yeah, that's a lot. Well, I certainly appreciate you dropping in when you can. I know from experience how difficult and gratifying it is to finish a degree like the one you're working on, but I did not have a family to balance when I was working on mine, so strength to you, buddy!

I just want to add that I've been getting progressively sick over the past three days or so, and I am suitably miserable right now.
