Not apropos of my previous inquiry, but I was randomly reminded of the Gin Blossoms "Allison Road" and it's... It's odd. It's not a song I've felt strongly of during the time it was popular, but now there's something so quintessentially 90's about it that it feels like it lives inside me.

I'm kind of wanting to keep that feeling. Name songs?

I was not familiar with that song. I listened to it, and I like it a lot. I'm not sure if you are looking for "quintessentially 90s" songs or songs of our personal nostalgia, so I'll just list several songs and you may do what you like with them.

Well, I'm legitimately glad that you enjoy something that I mentioned!
As to what I'm vibing, a little of both of those, honestly. I'm totally open to songs that carry personal nostalgia, though the 90'ser the better.

Spoiler

Blues Traveler - Yeah, that's a band that definitely captured that gestalt 90's tone. And listening to them right now, it's actually interesting how much it seems like there's a common thread with Hootie and the Blowfish. (Which is interesting since the bands were from the same period)
Eagle- Eye Cherry - Man, this is one I haven't thought of in a while. Interestingly, I tend to associate more with the early 2000's, despite it actually being the late 90's. I think the sound was just early for its time.
The Wallflowers - This is definitely one of THE 90's songs, and it's always fantastic, but the older I get, the sadder it all feels.
Natalie Imbruglia - So, this is a song that I actually really didn't like when it first came out. My mom loved it, so I got really sick of it very quickly, but somewhere around the third or fourth month it was out, it grew on me. Similar to Eagle Eye Cherry, I tend to associate this one more with the early 00's sound more than the 90's despite knowing full well it came out before that.
Del Amitri - Yeah, this one has that 90's vibe. Interestingly, I don't think I've ever actually heard the song's title or who made it before now.
Sister Hazel - Similarly, this is one I've heard a lot but pretty sure I've never known what it was called or who did it. Or at least that was so long ago that it's totally slipped my mind.
Counting Crows - Appropriately 90's, though I'm not sure I can say I ever really properly vibed with Counting Crows.
Sheryl Crow - Not one that I think I'd normally listen to, but absolutely one that I'd call an essential from the 90's.
Vertical Horizon - I'm... not actually sure I've heard this one. (Wait, no, that hook just takes a while to get to. I think this one has that late 90's sound that was really close to evolving into the 00's sound)
The Fray - Hey, far be it for me to say you can't enjoy what you enjoy!

To further keep that ball rolling, I'll toss in a few more 90's songs that I usually go to
Savage Garden - "I Want You" & "Truly, Madly, Deeply"
Seal - "Kiss from a Rose"
R.E.M. - Take your pick. I know they spanned backwards into the 80's, but they had like 4 albums release in the 90's, so I usually think of them.
The Cranberries - "Zombie"
The Proclaimers - "500 Miles" (So, this one is funny, because technically it's both an 80's song AND a 90's song.
Nirvana - "Smells like Teen Spirit" (While not the soft rock sound that I immediately associate with the 90's, the Grunge movement WAS extremely quintessentially 90's)
TLC - "Creep" and "Chasing Waterfalls"
Ace of Base - Just... in general (also, did not know they were Swedish.... You learn something new every day, huh?)

I could also just start tossing out a lot of Europop and EDM from the time, because that was probably the third or fourth most prolific sound during the time too. It's interesting, sitting here and listing everything out, that I think it wasn't that there was 90's sound so much as each subgenre kind of had an identity during the time.

Then there's the oddity that was Queen, since they were a band that never really made it to the 90's sadly, but they still had so much content on the radio. While I don't think they really count as having that 90's sound, there's no way I could divorce them from the decade in my mind.

I'll respond to your specific comments probably tomorrow, but here are a few more that I thought of:

"Inside Out" by Eve 6
"Runaway Train" by Soul Asylum
"I Would Do Anything for Love" by Meatloaf
"It's All Coming Back to Me Now" by Celine Dion
"Buddy Holly" by Weezer (and also "Suzanne," shout out to Mallrats)
Basically every song on the Dumb and Dumber soundtrack, "New Age Girl" by Deadeye Dick, "Crash" by The Primitives, and "If You Don't Love Me" by Pete Droge specifically. (Okay, so apparently "Crash" came out in '86?!? Well, I only knew it because of Dumb and Dumber, so I'm leaving it in.
"Jump by Kris Kross (not a favorite of mine, but very early 90s...)
Similarly, "Can't Touch This" by MC Hammer
"November Rain" by Guns n' Roses
"Rhythm of My Heart" by Rod Stewart (I would have guessed 80s for this song, but '91, apparently, and I love this song)

Take your time. There's no rush to exchange commentary.

  • So, fun fact about Eve 6, a few years ago, they were actually playing a festival here in town. I had planned to go, but the weather was threatening to get a little rough, so I ultimately stayed home, but I could still hear the concert from my house! They have a few more good songs on their album, with "Superhero Girl" probably being my second favorite of theirs.
  • This is one that doesn't stick in my head very much, though I do recognize it.
  • My mom absolutely loved Meatloaf, so if I'm truthful, I got a little tired of his music, but I've gained a decent appreciation in the time since. For no small contribution than his appearance in Rocky Horror and Fight Club.
  • Weezer is a band that I constantly forget was a 90's thing because it wasn't until High School that they crossed my radar. Buddy Holly is one of my favorites, but that might just be because it's a brilliant music video. At one time, I had the Blue album, but I have NO idea what happened to it, and it frustrates me to this day.
  • Dumb and Dumber is a movie that I can't decide if it's aged well or not. Nostalgia for it is SUPER heavy, but I can't figure out where I stand on it now. Out of all the music in it, I instantly go to "Boom Shack-a-Lak" for the chaos of the intro. And thinking of "Boom Shack-a-Lak" makes me think of "Here comes the Hotstepper" by Ini Kamoze.
  • So, those make me think of the general hip hop scene around then, and I have a confession. Anytime I hear the opening notes of "Under Pressure" I am instantly disappointed it isn't "Ice Ice Baby" and I genuinely would rather listen to the latter than the former.
  • Guns n' Roses are permanently embedded in my brain as an 80's phenomenon, even if they produced music later, I associate them with the 80's too strongly.
  • So, the word "Rhythm" I associate with a different song, that being "Rhythm of the Night" by Corona. As to Rod Stewart, it's a good song, but one that kind of fades into the background of my 90's experience. I remember it on the Radio a lot, but I don't think it's one I've ever searched out.

Aside from all that, I'll toss another couple songs that really had that late 90's thing going for them:
  • "Impression that I get" by the Mighty Mighty Bosstones
  • "I will buy you a new life" by Everclear
And then a song/band that I unironically like despite how... memetic they feel in retrospect:
  • "Barbie Girl" by Aqua. Though I think the rest of their album is actually a lot better than that single and they get unfairly judged for how seemingly shallow their top hit was.
And thinking on Weezer, leads me to think of:
  • They Might Be Giants. Specifically "Constantinople" and "Particle Man" thanks to Tiny Toon Adventures.

More happy holidays to all my lovely people around here <3

Hope you're doing alright through this cold spell. My new job is closed both the Friday before and Monday after Christmas, so I'm getting an extra long weekend, that's extra free because my family is out of town to visit other family. I'm feeling pretty good, especially since I'm still kind of riding the high of my first date and new relationship.

While I'm here, I wanna drop a comment about Fullmetal Alchemist, because a while back I did an entire rewatch of both the original series and Brotherhood, with an eye to spot the differences in tone and themes. The big thing I couldn't help but notice is that while the original definitely keeps revisiting the points of valuing what you have and that war is hell, it seems to be a bit more of a "traditional" story about hubris than Brotherhood, the latter of which is so, so, so focused on how people deal with trauma and impairment (Ed and Al being clearly "disabled" as we would label it, Riza Hawkeye's backstory with her grandfather, Havoc's injury just to name a few) even on top of the more in-depth fantasy political thriller. I actually prefer Brotherhood because of that aspect, I think.

Oh, and I watched the Brotherhood movie for the first time and... it's a very pretty fanfiction.

Not to be too glib, but I dodged it by living on another continent, so don't worry too much for me on that front.

Which can also be seen as an allusion to Hobbes' Leviathan, with a state using people as raw materials to perpetuate itself... but I may putting too much anarcho-socialist theory into an already theme-thick story :P

I don't think I ever watched it. FMA fanfic is probably the first prose I ever wrote, incidentally :D Even more tangentially, I found a few very lovely FMA fics in the last year or so if you're interested.

I'm having an... Interesting Christmas. My son was born on the 14th, and he is amazing! However, the birth was quite difficult in my wife, and she has a lot to recover from, which means multiple follow up visits to the hospital, including one today and one tomorrow. So that complicates Christmas somewhat. Then, most of my extended family is sick with various things (my parents caught the flu, my sister-in-law has covid), so a lot of our traditional celebrations (which we were already cautious about with the newborn) are getting thrown out the window this year. Also, we are nearly, but not entirely, broke.

And still, somehow, I managed to put up the tree yesterday, cook a scaled down version of the traditional Swedish Christmas buffee today, and we have a decent spread of gifts for my daughters (I'm most likely not getting any gifts at this time, since I'm the only adult in the family who is capable of getting to a store). Overall, not even half of what we would normally want or expect from the holidays, but somehow still good.

Congratulations on the birth of your son! And I hope your wife feels better very soon, as well as your extended family. I'm sorry to hear that your Christmas is not as ideal as it might be, but hopefully everything is going to get even better soon!

And Merry Christmas! My backwards half of the world hasn't quite gotten there yet, but I have some small degree of faith that we will one of these days. Tomorrow, most likely... :paranoid:

:D

More About 90s Music

And, here's a few other weird 90s songs I've thought of:

"She Don't Use Jelly" by The Flaming Lips
"Pretty Fly (For a White guy)" The Offspring
"Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" by The Crash Test Dummies (another of my Weird Al first songs)
"Light in Your Eyes" by Blessed Union of Souls (okay, not really that weird, but it came to mind)
"Bad Touch" by Bloodhound Gang

The Crash Test Dummies parody by Weird Al was on the same collection as Amish Paradise, so I didn't hear the real version for YEARS
The song "Gump" was also in that collection, and I very much think that it's better than the real one.[/quote]

I'm doing my dad a faovr by spending Christmas with him and my step mother. I've been pissy for over a week in dread. Right now I'm staying up late because I'm too mad to get to sleep. The thing in the world that gets me the maddest is my step mother, and it's hard not to dwell on her right now. It did occur to me though that there's a genuine possibility that she stole my education fund by accident. She had access to my accounts for a long time until she accidently withdrew my entire chequing account. It would still imply some pretty half ass accounting if she somehow took a huge some of money from me and then also my brother though. With some combination of devil may care accounting and narcissistic certainty it would be doable. Still think it was borrowed for an emergency and then forgotten though. Doubt she'd be bold enough to do it in such a way that she couldn't convince herself she wasn't the bad guy.
I don''t expect answers, I just feel like I can't get to sleep tonight until I unburden myself.

I didn't listen to a lot of 90's music. I was one of those kids who kind of grew up in their parents' generation. Also I was pretty young.

Don't know about Xmas, TP, but it sounds like you could have had a rockin' Festivus.

Here's a few more 90s songs...

"Bad Boys" by Inner Circle (apparently first released in '87, but re-released in '93. As the theme for COPS, this feels very 90s to me)
"Fields of Gold" by Sting (I associate Sting mostly with the 80s, but this particular song was 90s)
"I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston (technically a cover from the 70s, but Houston's version was EVERYWHERE in the early 90s when The Bodyguard came out)
"Bed of Roses" by Bon Jovi (another 80s band in my mind, with a great 90s song)
"Insane in the Brain" by Cypress Hill (I was never in to Cypress Hill at all, but even as a kid, I heard the chorus to this song a lot).
"Amnesia" by Chumbawamba (like the above, I heard the one line, "Do you suffer from long-term memory loss?" a lot when this came out)
"Tubthumping" by Chumbawamba (remembering the previous song made me remember this one. Again, this was frickin' everywhere at the time)
"Can You Feel the Love Tonight" by Elton John (Another movie song, although this one was of course written specifically for The Lion King and used in the movie)

I think it's reached something of a timeless quality myself.

I think that's fair.
Quote:
"I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston (technically a cover from the 70s, but Houston's version was EVERYWHERE in the early 90s when The Bodyguard came out)
So, I feel kind of two different ways about it, because while it was a 90's song, it doesn't have that 90's sound.
Quote:
"Bed of Roses" by Bon Jovi (another 80s band in my mind, with a great 90s song)
I think the 80's hair band of it all is a bit insurmountable for Bon Jovi, simply because the song I instantly snap to is "Wanted: Dead or Alive"
Though.... you mentioning that made me think of Wanted, which then made me think of Desperado, which was not a 90's song, BUT did feature heavily in the 1995 movie... umm... Desperado.
Another of my mother's favorites.
Quote:
"Insane in the Brain" by Cypress Hill (I was never in to Cypress Hill at all, but even as a kid, I heard the chorus to this song a lot).

At the time I'd never actually heard the song, but it's one I do associate with the time afterwards because of some odd kind of cultural osmosis. Also, who ordered the London Philharmonic? Cypress Hill, I'm looking at you....
Quote:
"Amnesia" by Chumbawamba (like the above, I heard the one line, "Do you suffer from long-term memory loss?" a lot when this came out)
"Tubthumping" by Chumbawamba (remembering the previous song made me remember this one. Again, this was frickin' everywhere at the time)

God, Tubthumping was a total force of nature of the time. I had actually been holding off on mentioning it just to see if someone else would eventually do so.
Which, at the time it was popular, there's something else that was an absolute phenomenon. The Spice Girls. Possibly one of THE most 90's things.
Quote:
"Can You Feel the Love Tonight" by Elton John (Another movie song, although this one was of course written specifically for The Lion King and used in the movie)

Man, Beyonce butchered the new version. With that said, Elton John has such a timelessness about his music that you could say he wrote anything at any point.
But while we're on the subject, I can branch that off on two different things, first being Phil Collins "Strangers like Me" from Tarzan, which was the best piece of music written for that movie.
But of more import, the better song that was sadly underappreciated because the movie it was in was underappreciated "I'm Still Here" from Treasure Planet by the GooGoo Dolls.
And while I'm on the subject of the GooGoo Dolls, I'd be remiss not to mention "Iris" from City of Angels by them. Yet another song that I used to often woo the ladies.

"Iris" is great, and the only song I can name by the GooGoo Dolls.

I'll respond more tomorrow, but your mentioning of City of Angels reminded me of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and their very 90s song "Under the Bridge." I also really love their song "Scar Tissue," from '99.

Yeah, that makes sense. I've never even seen the movie, but trailers and clips for it were all over the place at the time, which I think cements it in the 90s for me. To be fair, I also associate "Endless Love" with the 90s, despite coming out in the early 80s, because of Happy Gilmore. What? Friends listen to "Endless Love" in the dark!

See, "Wanted Dead or Alive" might be my least favorite Bon Jovi song, at least as far as the ones I know, which I'm sure is not a lot compared to their full discography. The quintessential Bon Jovie song for me personally is either the aforementioned "Bed of Roses," which was the first one I ever heard, or "You Give Love a Bad Name," which is just great. For most people, I assume it would be "Living on a Prayer."

As for "Desperado," it's a very good song, and I really like a lot of the Eagles' stuff.

Possibly while high...

Solid reference. I also love the Smashing Pumpkins line in that episode.

I never listened to the Spice Girls, but as you say, they were definitely a 90s phenomenon. Your mentioning it did remind me of "No Scrubs" by TLC, which I heard a lot, mostly because one of my friends used to blast that song all the time for no adequately explored reason.

The last of the Disney movies that I watched was The Lion King. Technically, I went to Pocahontas in the theaters, although the less said about that, the better.

A 90s song that I've forgotten to mention so far, but that came on my music player while driving today, is "Insensitive" by Jann Arden. I love that frickin' song.

Another 90s song that we haven't mentioned is "Breakfast at Tiffany's" by Deep Blue Something. While I wouldn't say I love the song by any means, I don't dislike it as much as some people I've heard talk about it.

Another one that straddles the 80s and 90s for me is "King of Wishful Thinking," which I would have guessed was 80s, but was, apparently, released in 1990.

On the other side of the spectrum is "Mambo No. 5" by Lou Bega, which came out right as the 90s were ending.

Another song that wouldn't go the hell away in 1999 was "Livin' la Vida Loca" by Ricky Martin. To be fair, I actually kind of like "Mambo No. 5," though.

Oh, and "Smooth" by Santana (featuring Rob Thomas). Again, frickin' everywhere.

And "All the Small Things" by Blink 182. Man, once this gets going it just opens the floodgates for my life at that time...
