So, is the answer to the riddle,
A wave in an ocean of waterless space,
It comes both from curses and sayings of grace,
It seeps from good sermons and lewd tavern songs,
From extols of virtues, confessions of wrongs,
It's trapped within boxes, and cast from the same,
If you know what it is, then just mention its name.

a lie?

Was Darkstar right?

The answer to the riddle is not, in fact, "a lie." Or at least, that was not the answer I was looking for.

If there are no other guesses in a couple days, then I will reveal the answer.

Thank you for playing.

Opinion question: When we shorten words, should the syllables remaining retain the pronunciation of the original word? It's always seemed odd to me, for instance, that the shortened version of "mercenary" is "merc," but pronounced with the hard "c" sound (merk) rather than the soft "c" sound of the original (mersenary). I understand that it is because of the general rules for hard and soft "c" sounds, which is heavily based on the vowel that follows the letter. The "c" in "mercenary" is followed by an "e," which means the "c" should be pronounced as an "s," whereas in "merc," the "c" is not followed by anything. But this rule ignores the origin of the shortened word, which seems odd.

Discuss.

It seems wrong to me to change the pronunciation like that, but I just can't imagine anybody calling the "mers" or "merses".
