I'm surprised the intersection between Gravedigger and Raise Dead hasn't found its way into an Evoke card already!
Bone Collector - Creature - Elemental | U When Bone Collector enters the battlefield, return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand. Evoke (You may cast this spell for its evoke cost. If you do, it’s sacrificed when it enters the battlefield.) 2/2
Total Resurrection Sorcery (R) Return all creatures from the graveyards onto the battlefield under their owners' control. The struggle isn't over while even one soul remains in the clutches of Death.
Total Resurrection Sorcery (R) Return all creatures from the graveyards onto the battlefield under their owners' control. The struggle isn't over while even one soul remains in the clutches of Death.
This is one of those designs where the effect exists (All Hallow's Eve, Twilight's Call), but not in the simplest form, which is surprising.
Pest Plague Sorcery(R) All creatures get -X/-X until end of turn.
Visual render
This is mayhaps a bit awkward to cost. It shouldn't cost or else it completely blows out Nausea and Infest out of the water - albeit Infest has a considerable number of strictly better variants these days. There's also desire to add double black to its cost though I think that makes it quite weak considering Black Sun's Zenith. Savage Twister is a peculiar comparison point btw. Both Yahenni's Expertise and Languish clearly indicate that this doesn't really scale in a linear manner when an effect hits for more than -2/-2.
While this isn't particularly mana effective, where it can compensate is in its color intensity. Mana costs with generic mana in addition to are a bit unorthodox - though Ecological Appreciation, Ingenious Mastery, and Orcus, Prince of Undeath are recent cards (historic legal) - plus the cost can be thought to be a Drain Life reference as well Overall making this more splashable is what is going to give an interesting angle to it IMO where as is with cost it would be just a bad Black Sun's Zenith.

Here's a dump of some 17 cards from my Silmarillion fan set I finished some years ago that I think roughly fit into this thread's category. I might have posted some of them elsewhere previously - most certainly actually now that I think about it. One thing to note here is that the renders say "produce mana" instead of "add mana (to your mana pool)" as the set was made prior to the wording update where references to mana pool were removed as "producing mana" was my idea back in the idea to address that particular wording area.
Quote:
Broken Vessel Enchantment — Aura(U) Enchant creature You control enchanted creature. Enchanted creature is a Minion with base power and toughness 1/1 and loses all abilities.
Visual render
A sort of a black Control Magic variant but not really. It's more like a creature removal that gives you a 1/1 as a bonus.
Quote:
Haven of Bliss Betwixt Land(U) : Add or . Activate this ability only during your main phase. Twice every day there came a hour of twilight when both trees were faint and their gold and silver beams were mingled.
Visual render
"Sorcery-speed" lands. The reason this is worded it is because people used to get warnings in tournaments for forgetting to float mana before casting and whatnot. This appeared as a cycle of allied color lands in the set. I recall enemy color variants were to be included in the following sets which I never got into finishing.
Quote:
False Council Sorcery(U) Look at target player's hand. You may choose a nonland card from it. If you do, that player discards the chosen card, then draws a card. Even Melkor found some ears that would heed him; and his lies passed as secrets of which the knowledge proves the teller wise.
Visual render
Essentially Vendilion Clique effect as a black sorcery. It also keeps the Clique's self-rummaging effect, which is a sort of a bend (albeit that's getting more questionable by the day with the lessons and such), but that's very niche tech with this.
Quote:
Feed the Emptiness Sorcery (C) Each player loses 5 life. This can't reduce your life total to less than 1. "What wouldst thou have more? Dost thou desire all the world for thy belly?" —Morgoth Bauglir
Visual render
Erm, with this I kinda get why it might not have appeared - it certainly gives black certain type of burn range, especially as a common. Regardless, I think the "you can't die from this" is an interesting clause that I think we are still yet to see in this manner.
Quote:
Watchtower Loremaster Creature — Elf Advisor (C) When ~ ETBs, draw a card. In the Noontide of the Realm the Eldar became full-grown in stature of body and of mind, and advanced ever in skill and knowledge. [1/1]
Visual render
Colorshifted Elvish Visionary. There's an existing 1/1 variant - this shifted version prolly hasn't been printed to differentiate between green and blue drawing where this can be arguable be thought of as an efficient creature, which is more in the vain of green.
Quote:
Taint Enchantment — Aura (C) Enchant permanent Whenever enchanted permanent becomes tapped, its controller loses 2 life. The blight of hatred flowed out thence. Green things fell sick and rotted, and rivers were choked with slime.
Visual render
The main notable thing here with this to its contemporaries is this can enchant any permanent.
Quote:
Dancing Deer Creature — Elk (C) Haste, vigilance It is sung that in that feast of the Spring of Arda Tulka espoused Nessa the sister of Oromë, and she danced before the Valar upon the green grass of Almaren. [1/1]
Visual render
A bit peculiar, but stranger green creatures have been printed in green recently afaik. Can also fit at uncommon if you wanna play it safe.
Quote:
Ungoliant's Offpsring Creature — Spider (C) Deathtouch There spiders of the fell race of Ungoliant abode, spinning their unseen webs in which all living things were snared; and monsters wandered there that were born in the long dark before the Sun, hunting silently with many eyes. [1/1]
Visual render
There's nothing notable speaking here mechanically speaking, but I think this would still be the first monoblack Spider unless I've missed one since.
Quote:
Abide in Waiting Sorcery (C) Put target creature on the battlefield or creature card in a graveyard into its owner's library third from the top. There he lay upon his face before the feet of Manwë and sued for pardon; but his prayer was denied, and he was cast into prison in the fastness of Mandos, whence none can escape, neither Vala, nor Elf, nor mortal Man.
Visual render
I recall there were few existing cards using this sort of tech, but exploring it has still been quite superficial.
Quote:
Spin a Tale Sorcery (C) At the beginning of the next end step, draw three cards, then discard a card. Vairë the Weaver is his spouse, who weaves all things that have ever been in Time into her storied webs, and the halls of Mandos that ever widen as the ages pass are clothed with them.
Visual render
Like a "super sorcery" speed draw card or something. Nifty concept if you ask me, but not too noteworthy.
Quote:
Let Them Burn Instant (C) ~ deals an amount of damage of your choice to you and target creature you don’t control. "None and none! What I have left behind I count now no loss; needless baggage on the road it has proved." —Fëanor, Spirit of Fire
Visual render
A bit of a bend for red so maybe not the sort of card to appear in a standard-legal environment but I think this could very well popup in a supplementary modern+ legal product. I did quite bit of exploring with expanding red's capabilities mechanically in the set.
Quote:
Call of the Sea Sorcery(U) Gain control of target creature with power less than or equal to the number of Islands you control. (This effect last indefinitely.) Those to whom that music comes hear it ever after in their hearts, and longing for the sea never leaves them again.
Visual render
Pretty basic creature stealing effect. Vedalken Shackles is worth bringing up in relation to this card.
Quote:
Secret Fire Instant (C) Add and one mana of any color. "Therefore I say: Eä! Let these things Be! And I will send forth into the Void the Flame Imperishable, and it shall be at the heart of the World, and the World shall Be." —Eru Ilúvatar
Visual render
One mana rite that also does temporary mana fixing. Temporary mana fixing in red certainly has gotten more visibility over the years - back when I made this it was still a bit more obscure perhaps.
Quote:
Resounding Delight Instant (C) Target creature gets +4/+4 until end of turn. You gain life equal to its power. In the midst of the war a spirit of great strength and hardihood came to the aid of the Valar, hearing in the far heaven that there was battle in the Little Kingdom; and Arda was filled with the sound of his laughter.
Visual render
Very by the numbers design, pump effect combined with scaling life gain burst.
Quote:
Unmoved Mover Instant(R) Untap all permanents. (Including those your opponents control.) "See that no theme may be played that hath not its uttermost source in me, nor can any alter the music in my despite." —Eru Ilúvatar
Visual render
Combotastic simple blue effect.
Quote:
Undying Lands Enchantment Land(U) Indestructible (Effects that say "destroy" don't destroy this permanent.) : Add . In the dwelling place of the Valar there naught faded nor withered, neither was there any stain upon flower or leaf in that land; for the very stones and waters were hallowed.
Visual render
Enchantment version of Darksteel Citadel. Flavor plays a big role here.
Quote:
Musings of Wisdom Instant(U) Draw two cards, then put two cards from your hand both on top of your library or both on the bottom of your library. For though the Maiar loved the Elves, they walked among them unseen, or in form as one of them, and they did not know whence came the fair visions that they put into their hearts.
Visual render
A Brainstorm inspired card selection design. This in comparison to Brainstorm is however card disadvantage making it clearly weaker overall - although this also has the possibility of tucking the cards to the bottom which Brainstorm doesn't have.
Quote:
Heed the Call Sorcery(R) Search your library for a creature card, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle. Those that had courage, and stayed, perceived swiftly that the Great Rider was no shape out of darkness; for the light of Aman was in his face, and all the noblest of the Elves were drawn towards it.
Visual render
I haven't specifically checked for this in a while but I think this sort of simple creature effect hasn't still been printed.
Oh yeah, the reason why the render doesn't specifically note about shuffling since my idea for addressing the length of the shuffling clause (the set was made prior to that change as well) was to make it an inherit effect of shuffling. As in like non-rare cards with the space for it that search a library would come with a reminder text of "(Shuffle your library after a player searches it.)" Only 2 or 3 cards would specifically need be errated to function with that change. Namely Signal the Clans and couple of others I can't recall from the top of my head.

*"To YMTC it up" means to design cards that have value mostly from a design perspective. i.e. you would put them in a case under glass in your living room and visitors could remark upon the wonderful design principles, with nobody ever worring if the cards are annoying/pointless/confusing in actual play
Mimicraft Instant(R) Copy target activated or triggered ability. You may choose new targets for the copy. (Mana abilities can’t be targeted. A triggered ability uses the words "when," "whenever," or "at.")

Burgeoning Peace Enchantment Activated abilities of lands that aren't mana abilities can't be activated. With the Immortal Sun gone, Ixalan was once more at peace.
(though I think a X spell with cascade and nothing else is less interesting than it looks, because most of the time it's going to be worse the higher the value of X which kind of goes against the logic of X spells)
I have somehow forgotten that that cycle was a thing when making it even though I know that's the only reason Cascade decks are played in Modern I wouldn't necessarily call it a mistake, though maybe the cards needed an overpriced nominal CMC The card's concept is still cool and it kinda is surprising it doesn't exist unless you know about (and remember) the suspend bombs
Piloted Mech Artifact — Vehicle(U) When ~ ETBs, create a 1/1 blue Gnome Artificer creature token. Crew 1 (Tap any number of creatures you control with total power 1 or greater: This Vehicle becomes an artifact creature until end of turn.) [4/4]

Queen's Guard — Creature — Human Soldier (U) As long as you're the monarch, Queen's Guard gets +1/+1 and has vigilance. “I would glady give my life for the queen, but I'd sooner spill the blood of any who would dare defy her.” 2/1
