I came to this just after watching My Neighbor Totoro for the first time, and it was quite a serendipitous brain-priming for this. It took me to the line about embraces/embarrassment to remember the trade of... dignitaries... and then re-encountered the name of the kingdom :D

Very sweet, and I appreciate Maul's PoV that does make interesting points about the encounter of different cultures, as clever as faux-serious. Thank you for sharing!

I've never seen it myself, but I've heard very good things. I'll have to check it out at some point.

There's something very endearing to me about the way one of Daneera's bears would act and feel contrasted so dramatically with how Aloise's bears would act and feel. I also like Aloise's worldview here, where she is aware enough to recognize Daneera's perspective and sort of weaves that into her narrative even as she incorporates its representative into her own world.

Also, bear hugs. :D

Speaking of which, I of course enjoyed writing the sequence of bear puns at the end, because of course I would...

Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for reading! I had fun with this one, silly as it is.

Awww. Nice fourth wall teasing, Grimdark!Sharaka can relate. It sucks to be plain unable to share what you love with people you care about, and I really like Kerik here. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for reading, Huey! Yeah, Kerik is kind of rocking the whole boyfriend thing in this piece, and I find him very endearing here. But I also like the more-vulnerable-than-usual Daneera, as well. With only herself and Kerik here, we get to see her a little more emotional than she usually is. I don't think that's a normal thing for her, but they're coming to the end of their time together, at least more or less constant time together, anyway, and I think this shows their connection.

The echoes here of what Daneera likely feels about her Spark and Kerik's lack thereof really hit me while writing it. In canon, I'm sure she will mostly stay on Morvata because that's where Kerik is, but I have to believe her wanderlust will start itching at her eventually. And if they do ever have a child, as Daneera seems to want, I'm sure it will break Daneera's heart to know that she can't show her kid the multiverse.

But there is plenty on Morvata that she can show her eventual child, and they would all have one other.

Thanks for reading!

The timing of this in incredibly coincidental as I just reread Antony's canon debut story yesterday. I always enjoy seeing Sharaka and Orida hanging out, and the message here is apropos for Orida, especially young Orida. I'm always curious in stories like this what it was that caused the problem to begin with, but I get that it's not really the point of the story.

Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, I often find myself wondering what exactly happenied, but I know that for such short pieces those lines of inquiries are dangerous rabbit holes for me - I wouldn't post them until I came up with the entire backstory, which is not guaranteed to be noteworthy enough to warrant the effort. That's not to say that I'm averse to eventually come up (or discover, if someone else wants in) the exact event that's referred to there, should inspiration strike.

Thank you for reading and commenting!

Oh, I have drafted a new version of a story we have talked about some time ago. Let me know if I botched something, especially about Daneera's characterization.

(For anyone else: the first draft of this story was sent to me by Raven; while the themes and portrayed events - and a few lines of dialogue near the end - are basically the same, I found the initial approach to be not particularly fitting to specific dynamics of Sharaka's framework, at which point he offered it to me so I could refit it to my liking, and this is the result. Kudos to him!)

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense to me. Better to get something down than get stuck in the land of decision paralysis, definitely. And ultimately, while it is perhaps a curiosity, it really doesn't affect the story itself, so probably best to leave it be.

No joke, I completely forgot I had written a full draft for this. I remember the story well, and the discussion regarding it, but I had completely forgotten about the draft itself. I went back and reread it, and I think you made a lot of improvements to the original idea. I really like how Gale and Tryst operate in this story. Neither one has any idea what's going on, but they read their friends, hear what they need, and act, even not knowing exactly what the circumstances are.

Once again, we see how deep the friendship runs between Sharaka and Daneera, and, as you have stated before, how they have one another's back. I also liked how you showed Sharaka's anger when she sees the bullying, even directing at her good friend here when it seems like Daneera was going to prevent her from taking care of the problem. I also really like poor Taylen, and I am kind of hoping he shows up again at some point. For no discernable reason, I see him being a potential friend for Scar.

Thanks for writing this story, Huey! I liked the idea from the moment I had it, but I wasn't able to do it justice, so I'm happy that you could do so.

Daneera, I feel, is quite the Reluctant Protagonist, meaning that she can be very authoritative when she wants to be, even if she rarely wants to. Not like a ruler, or a boss, but like the leader of a pack. So when she says that "wait" both Gale and Tryst get that whatever just happened was important/urgent enough to make Daneera bust out the Huntmaster voice so they snap into Serious Business mode on their own. Gale, having her hearing, is more attuned to harmonics in general, while Tryst has more background with Sharaka so Daneera's tone, combined with a quick glance to her, ahem, good friend, gave her a lot of information about the emergency without needing to see Taylen - and her scan of the courtyard allowed her to have a good guess of what's the best use of her, well, assets and talents.

All of this I of course had to cut out in order to not bog down the rhythm of the story :V On the flipside, I'm pretty proud of how little I had to think before coming up with a subject that would have both girls very involved in a conversation despite their widely different areas of interest :D

I love their relationship, how they're both civilized and wild in deeply different ways but get each other on a fundamental level. Here Daneera immediately knows how hard Sharaka is going to explode on those fools and has a Bad Feeling about the titanic fallout, likes her enough to risk her ass blatantly sabotaging school property and still is aware that the best way to treat her at that point is as a snarling beast, speaking in a firm even tone while never breaking eye contact.

This is in a way the opposite of the Menagerie piece, where Sharaka is the most knowledgeable about Daneera's schedule and communication, and while she teases her mercilessly I feel her inappropriate jokes about Daneera's parents and their habits help Daneera... normalize it? Sharaka presenting the possibility to raiding the means for her parents to be neglectful so casually signals there is no need to submit to ordinary social rules, and implicitly validates Daneera's "non-standard" relationships and feelings. Of course, this kind of jokes can only fly if you trust the other implicitly not to laugh at your expense.

The two pieces are quite different, but still grapple with the sometimes delicate balance people, and teens in particular, must keep between family, the self and friends, and all the awkwardness and trauma that can develop on each side.

I'm not at all against a Soft Viashino, but while I really like Scar as a character I never felt compelled to write for her. If you ever need a soundboard for a piece involving Sharaka's tribe you know how to find me :3

I'm very glad to hear it! If you hadn't done the first draft I may have never gotten around to it, so thank you again for that.

PS: I love that you got that "Warning: Foul language" was both a content warning and acted as the title of the piece :D

Well, thank you! I was pleased with this one. The whole thing started back when I introduced the VITAL fighting game back in "The Big Break." Sometime shortly after that, it occurred to me that a game based off of our VITAL tournament would, in theory, have the same characters as ours did. And then I realized how weird it would be that the High School kids would essentially be playing the game as themselves and not think it's weird. Antine was, of course, the obvious person to be bothered by it. Poor Antine...

And, as always, thank you for reading and commenting! I'm glad that you liked this one. I certainly had fun writing it.

After reading your Sharaka shorts in the 50 word threads, a somewhat horrifying thought came to my mind. Do you think HS Sharaka's mother is still around? And if not, does Sharaka ever have her friend Orida over, or do they always hang out at Orida's?

:takei:

"Still around"? What do you- ah.

Oh, that's right. I had forgotten that Sharaka's mother's death was established in "Changing Heart." My mistake.

As for how Dorn faired that day? Well, I imagine that was not a pleasant scene to witness, even if you held no love for Dorn, as I imagine most people don't/didn't. I imagine he was not in school for a while after that day.
