I wrote on his wife’s (Melissa) FB page on Sunday to wish her a happy Mother’s Day and to see all the pics of his kids behind (they both look exactly like him) and their old wedding pics.... I had to take take several deep breaths. A real loss.

They all look happy tho and I hope they’re doing well

Hakeem’s boy, Liam, just turned 12 and I loved reading this message from Melissa:

Quote:
Happy 12th Birthday to my amazing son. He is the smartest person I know, he is sarcastic, he has a dry since of humor, he is so stubborn, he is the sweetest, he is literally the most manerly person I've ever met, he wears his heart on his sleeve and can be brutally honest without realizing but he makes life the most interesting. He may be a lot taller than me but he will always be my little boy.

Sure sounds like someone we used to know :)

Our good friend Hakeem would have been 40 today. I would have liked to have been able to bust his balls about that a bit.

Miss you buddy. We all do.

His wife, Melissa, posted:

Quote:
There are no words to describe what it feels like to look into your children's eyes and see the sadness, grief, pain and loneliness over losing a parent. They do amazing and are such strong kids, but the waves of grief never leave our home. It comes back with every occasion, every memory that comes to the surface and it can hit with no notice at all.
Today is understandably a hard one. Matt would be celebrating his 40th birthday and although he wasn't a person to make a big deal out of that, the kids know we would have celebrated regardless.
We will still celebrate Matt's 40th birthday today and know he is still a part of everything we do.
Happy Heavenly Birthday to Matt. He is missed every day.

I sent her our love on behalf of Hakeem’s online friends.

Thanks for the updates Barney. I still think of Hakeem and everyone here whenever I miss playing Duels (which is most days).

Hakeem’s daughter, Leah, wrote to Santa this year. All Leah asked for in her letter this year was for Santa to tell daddy in heaven how much she loves and misses him.

Santa wrote back. “Don’t worry your dad already knows how much you love him. Hope you have a great Christmas”

I’m not crying, you’re crying

Hakeem’s widowed wife got remarried yesterday. I’m really glad she found happiness again for both her and their kids. Her new husband has kids too so lots of camping trips, etc.

Good for her.

No matter what happens in life, it moves on. Remember and learn from the past, but never be beholden to it. May this man and his kiddos help bring Hakeem's family some better peace and happiness today and in the future.

Barney, thanks for the updates. You should join the Discord.

Hakeem would have been 41 today. Miss you dude. World is emptier without you.

His widow made a nice post about it. Happy to hear his boy has the same sense of humour :)

Quote:
Happy 41st Birthday to Matt in heaven. There isn't one day since you left that I haven't thought about you or talked about you. The kids have grown so much and I know how proud you would be of their humor (Liam has your dry sarcastic humor), their intelligence and the amazing hearts they both have. I'm proud of our children and wish you could be a part of it all. Tonight we will celebrate your birthday like I have for the past 22 years. It's a bitter sweet day because we miss you so much but also still need to celebrate you. There will be laughter and tears all day as we share stories and our favorite memories. We take some comfort in knowing that Grammy made her way to you just in time for your birthday ❤

They made him a bday cake. “Happy birthday dad”

Looks amazing too.

I would have loved to bust Hakeem’s balls about being in his 40s like me. Kills me that we never got to share that drink together. Very thankful our kids met at least.

My buddy Taras is over in Newfoundland right now. Last time he was there, I was there with him having fish n chips together after having met Melissa, Liam and Leah.

I miss that city, that province, that air, that vibe. Now that Liam is older and is captain sarcastic, apparently, I think next time I go, I’ll take Liam out and just tell him about the side of his dad that we knew. Melissa said she never knew anything about this world of his. Would love to tell his boy all about it and the impact his dad had on all of us. “You see, Liam, there was this guy, SteveO, that your dad didn’t get along with. And that’s when your dad explained to me what a narcissist is…”

Would love to have that talk one day. I’ll check it with his mom first tho so she doesn’t worry about some strange man asking to drive away with her son lol

In keeping with NGA traditions, just show up with no warning, explain what you want to the child, and then disappear. lol

I'm out.

Five year anniversary today of when we lost Hakeem in a tragic car accident. He died the same age my dad did at 37. Obscenely young.

His widowed wife, Melissa, made a nice post today:

Quote:
Another year! Another year of grieving the milestones that you have missed, Another year of wondering what you would think about the kids growth and personalities. Another year of healing. Another year of missing the life we shared and Another year gone by so fast. Life moved forward for myself and the kids. We found happiness and we found that it's ok to smile again. But moving forward and learning to live again, doesn't remove the love or the grief that we feel so much throughout the year. We are thankful that even in our new life, we have support and love through pain and grief.
I still feel like you were with us yesterday but in so many other ways, it feels like a lifetime ago. We miss you and love you Matt! You are in our hearts and minds every single day!
