Seems to me like Besdrin is basically a more neutral Raiker (I can't really call him the "good" Raiker, what with leaving all of the slaves and prisoners to their fates, but at least he went out of his way to not make things actively worse).

@Perrin Yellowrose: Nice. I really like this character. The flawed background of running from the character's responsibilities leaves some potential story hooks for Perrin later in the campaign (if the DM wants) and creates some potential tension in the group (if you want to play it that way) as to whether or not you're really going to stick it out or not. I really like how you create the connection with nature in a way that feels organic (ha!) and is strongly connected to the halfling's family, too.

It's been a few close calls (and we're most likely heading into a dangerous battle again this week), but I'm having a lot of fun. I'm getting along well with my new group, and the campaign is shaping up to be quite interesting, even if there's been quite a lot of dungeon crawling so far.

I'm completely out of spell slots (which is not a great position for the main healer to be in), but we at least for a short rest in, so I have my wild shape and a class ability which grants temporary HP to the whole party. So I won't be entirely useless.

Well, just remember that Druids in 5e have the ability to exchange hit points for damage taken, so if an enemy hits you for, say, 8 damage, you can just reduce your current hit points by 8. It's a neat little trick.

Well, I've got a new campaign starting on Saturday, and that means a new character! And, because I found myself with a lot of free time last week as I was waiting for papers to roll in, I decided to write up a backstory short story for this new character. Good stuff. I like how you subtly explain where he picked up each of his main class skills without ever actually mentioning the class by name.

His obsession with his father is also well written, and mashed him feel both more human and more alien at the same time. Great work, as always!

Thanks! That is, naturally, precisely what I was going for. I'm really playing against type here, so I wanted a backstory that justified the things Asp is good at. I'll be playing a Rogue and going for the Phantom archetype from Tasha's, and for mechanical reasons, I took the Guild Artisan background.

The way the DM did this game is that we were very limited by class and race, but we got one roll on a d100 for race, and each of the rarer races had a "difficulty" that we had to beat with the roll. I came into it assuming I would play human, but I rolled an 84, and I figured I didn't want to waste it. We also had to roll for class. Any caster was rare, so we had to beat the DC for that. I rolled a 4, so Rogue it was for me! Of course, that suits me just fine. Rogues are my favorite class by sort of a wide margin, so I was happy to try my hand at a Yuan-ti Rogue.

The DM also had us roll stats in front of him, and I rolled pretty well. I think my array was 8, 16, 16, 16, 17, and 18. That 8 is unfortunate, but as a Rogue, I just made Strength my dump stat (thus Asp's perpetual physical weakness) but everything else is very nice (I really can't complain about having a minimum +3 to every skill except Athletics). So I built my character based mostly on the skills I wanted for gameplay, as I usually do.

But, for the character's backstory, I wanted to play against Rogue type a bit, just for fun. Usually when I play roguish characters, they're the kinds of characters with crappy pasts who have had to do things they weren't proud of to get by and are trying to become better people. And they're fun for me to play, but I wanted to do something different here with Asp, so I basically tried to figure out a backstory that answered the question of how he can do things like sneak attack and picking locks, and why he would be good with poisons, and why he's obsessed with death (preparing for the Phantom thing at level 3). I wasn't sure how I was going to do it at first, until I decided to take Guild Artisan as a background. I settled on Alchemist's Tools for the Artisan Tool set, and then sort of worked backwards. He's obsessed with poisons. Why? Because he wants to kill without leaving scars. Why? Because his father died scarred. Why is that important? Because his father's face always haunted him. And so forth and so on.

It was a really fun build, and probably the most "top-down" character design I've done in my short time playing D&D. I was particularly fond of his poison trick in the apothecary. Yuan-ti are not widely known in this DM's world, and without seeing the claws or the teeth, Asp can reasonably pass as human. His guildmasters would know he was Yuan-ti, but they might reasonably not know he was immune to poison. My DM gave me a high five when he read that part. :)

Anyway, thanks for reading! I'm really looking forward to playing Asp in this new campaign. Here's hoping he doesn't just die in session 1!

So, Perrin died last night :cry: we were in a dangerous situation and we hadn't had any chances to rest. We knew there was safety to be found after one more battle, so we decided to press on. What happened next was simply that the dice absolutely destroyed us. The DM kept rolling critical hits, and I dropped almost immediately. Then both I and another player rolled nat 1's on death saves. It would have been a TPK if I hadn't reminded the DM that one of the NPC's who were hiding within earshot of the battle had access to some healing magic. Unfortunately it was too late for Perrin, and two of his companions also fell.

But hey, that's the nature of the game. During banter before the session began, I complained about having to many character ideas is probably never get to play. Now I get to use one of them!

I'm still figuring the details, but I'll have something new to add to this thread soon. My new character is a Way of Mercy Monk. I just really want to punch people and not have to worry so much about keeping track of spells, but I also enjoy being a healer, so I think this will be a good class for me.

Sorry to hear about Perrin, Aaarrrgh. I've been lucky so far in that I haven't lost any of my characters yet (though admittedly, the DM admitted once that he has a hard time killing off player characters, so grain of salt and all that). But I know it's not an easy thing. In a public game once, I saw a guy nearly have a meltdown when his character was killed. Hopefully your next character will be a fun and engaging change of pace.

As a DM, my favorite tool is what I call the ‘warning shot’. Fortunately, it’s exactly as sinister as it sounds. My ‘warning shots’ led to the two funniest moments I’ve ever had at the gaming table. Firstly, I present to you the Druid’s Fungophobia:
The entire campaign took place in the Underdark, and the party was investigated a series of mass disappearances at the behest of a local Drow princess. The party had uncovered a few clues and were searching for a local alchemist at a small farm village. Of course, underground the farms grow mushrooms (this becomes relevant soon). The rest of the story I posted on a D&D Guide online platform.

I played a one-shot today set on Ravnica. It was the sample, introductory level 1 campaign from the book. It was fairly fun. I went with a bit more serious of a character than most of the rest of the party, so there was a fair amount of derailment going on that annoyed my character, but it was still a fun day, reminding me of the things I like about Ravnica and not too much of the things that I don't. My group is between games right now, so one of the players offered to run it as a one-shot to give our usual DM a break and a chance to just play. I'm looking forward to the new game coming up, but this was a fun diversion in the meantime.

Well, that campaign went pretty quickly. We finished up on Saturday with an epic battle in High Heaven wherein our party found themselves allying with the loyal gods against the treacherous ones in a celestial civil war. We ended up winning, with yours truly striking the killing blow. Well, it was neither a strike nor a blow, technically, but I directly caused us to win, anyway.

It was a fun campaign, and I really enjoyed my character, Nocturne. He was very enjoyable to play, although I don't think I will be in any hurry to play a warlock again. I feel they are very good early on, but (depending on the DM and the campaign, of course) weaker as you move forward, particularly as you fight against things that have legendary resistances. We only wound up with two full casters in the party, and the other one was the healer, so having so few spell slots is pretty brutal, particularly for a DM who favors one big, challenging battle per session over shorter ones with short rests in between.

Like I said, I really enjoyed the game, but if I had one complaint, it would be how quickly we moved through it. For plot reasons (and because I suspect the DM was somewhat losing interest in favor of our next campaign) we ended up jumping levels three separate times, and by a lot. We jumped from level 6 to level 10, and then from 10 to 14, and then right before the final session, he had us level to 20 for the final fight (we were empowered by a few of the gods who did not themselves fight in the battle). I found this a bit disappointing because I was really enjoying the setting and the characters, so I would have preferred to slow-play things more than that, but it was still a ton of fun.

We are probably going to start our new campaign in a couple of weeks, so I'm looking forward to that. It's going to be a Nordic-themed fantasy world, and my character concept is weird, and indirectly inspired by something from the M:EM, in a loose way. Judging from what I've heard from the other players, I suspect the tone is going to be significantly different in this game, and I'm looking forward to see how it goes.

I'm about to start a new campaign as well, because the previous one lost a few players and we couldn't find anyone who wanted to join. So now we're going to do Curse of Strahd. If I roll good enough stats for it, I'm planning to pay a concept I've been toying with for a while: a half orc zealot barbarian with a single level of shadow Sorcerer. The plan is to be practically impossible to kill. I have a pretty fun backstory planned, too.
