This may be blatant and generic, but I really hope things start getting better for everybody very soon. Good luck, everyone!

Here's a trivia question for you: What was the first Disney film to feature the phrase "Hakuna Matata" in a song?

The prominent uses are in Lion King (1994) and Toy Story (1995). The phrase (non musical) was also used in Aladdin 3 (1996) and both Lion King sequels.

If it’s not a trick question it’s something extremely obscure.

Personal Stuff, feel free to ignore

Aaaaand, insurance denied my MRI today. The day of my appointment. At least, as people have mentioned around here, they didn't deny it the day after my appointment, but it is still frustrating.

Aw ****, that SUCKS. Sounds like it was an unlucky day all around. Hope it spins upwards sooner rather than later.

In other news, I'm finding out Guy Ritchie is kinda my comfort director. All gets blown to hell and back but the little guys end up alright in the end, maybe with a few new bruises.

@console scalping: It's only the small fry equivalent of the soulless profiteering we see all around us. Unless another hypocritical law bans for the small what the big does for breakfast, the hyena runts will keep on chewing on the lions' leftovers. Pardon me for the weird phrasing, the aforementioned director has some enthralling dialogue.

At some point supply and demand will invert. I was soliciting opinions on when this will occur.

Can you please show your logic for the first assumption? I'm not sure that I follow.

@Raven: that is absolutely terrible. I will never be able to understand the people who claim that the American healthcare system is the best way of doing things. Here in Sweden, if a doctor says you need a procedure, then you get the procedure. I cannot imagine the frustration of that situation.

@scalping: unlike things like concert tickets, consoles can (at least in theory) be produced ad infinitum. Because there will always be people with more patience than budget, producers can be sure to still find a market for a second wave of merchandise after the scalpers have bought out the first wave. If the scalpers are unable to offload their stock before that wave hits the shelves, they will most likely lose money on the whole affair. All it takes is more people getting over the FOMO and waiting until now product is available, and scalping would no longer be profitable. But based on what I've seen of human psychology, that's unlikely to happen anytime soon.

The current lack of supply is due to a parts shortage. AMD says they expect this to be resolved sometime in the second half of 2021. The question then just becomes should one expect scalpers to give up on resale.

I agree with Aaarrrgh: this specific instance will fade with time, the phenomenon itself... especially once the "business opportunity" has been proven as solidly profitable, there's the chance of even richer pricks following in with big enough capitals to manufacture scarcity through a distribution that's not hindered by part shortage and a demand not made desperate by quarantine.

And why would you expect scalpers to "give up on resale"? Do you mean reselling with more legitimate prices, or just keeping dozens of consoles around for **** and giggles? If they have made enough money, I see no reason why they shouldn't resell the rest of the console they have at market cost (or maybe slightly under) to rebuild capital for the next f***ery. And while you may convince a decent chunk of people not to give in and give those chucklef*** money they don't deserve, convincing people they shouldn't buy the scalper's now-decently-priced consoles just to screw them over is significantly harder.

What I wonder is whether this crapstorm will motivate online sellers to make better blocks for future attempts. But as long as they aren't seen as at least partly culpable in this, and thus liable to lose revenue, I doubt serious investments will be taken in this regard.

I mean, the diamond industry has been scalping everyone for well over a century now, so I'm not too optimistic about any of this.

Whoever decided an engagement ring should be two months salary can kiss my derrière.

Diamonds used to be significantly less popular until they started hawking them as THE engagement stone. They even tell you how much your love is worth in those ads. 2 months salary.

Yes, but they keep a tight grip on global supply. Even if the scalpers worked together (not happening) they couldn't overpower Sony's eventual output.

De Beers. They even sent people to do presentations at high schools to inform girls that an expensive ring was a sort of guarantee if they were jilted.

History lesson: engagements used to be legally binding. A man who broke his engagement had to pay his ex-fiancee for the damage to her reputation and future marriage prospects (a woman was allowed to break off the engagement at any time without penalty, which is where we got the phrase "it is a woman's prerogative to change her mind"). When this law was removed some young women were (rightfully, in many cases) concerned that a man might string them along and leave them with nothing. The diamond industry spotted an opportunity and went ham on establishing the diamond as a replacement for the fee. Eventually, people forgot about the point of it being a financial security thing (which doesn't even really apply anymore, because the second hand market for jewelry is pretty saturated, so your lucky to get anything close to half the purchase value for the ring), but the tradition remains.

Fun fact: Amethyst used to be considered a highly desirable gemstone. It was a favorite of the Romans. The discovery of massive quantities of amethyst in Brazil tanked the price to the point it is now considered a "semi-precious" gem. This is probably what inspired mining companies to band together and restrict supply after the extent of South Africa's diamond supply became apparent.
