Maro’s Strixhaven Teaser
Before previews for Strixhaven officially begin, I thought it would be fun to do another of my Duelist-style teasers where I give tiny hints of things to come. Note that I’m only giving you partial information.

First up, here are some things you can expect:

• a white card with the rules text “draw three cards”

• a planeswalker you know, but not as you know them
Professor Onyx

• a card featuring Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa’s likeness (for winning the World Championship)
Elite Spellbinder

• a spell with three X’s in its mana cost

• introduction of a new evergreen keyword
ward

• a red sorcery that you can have as many copies in your deck as you want

• a futureshifted card (appearing for the first time in a premier set other than Future Sight)

• an MDFC with the same card type on both sides that hasn’t been printed before
Roward, Scholar of Sparks / Will, Scholar of Frost

• a card sharing something never shared before

• a cycle of enemy dual lands finishing off a ten-card cycle
the snarl cycle

Here are some snippets from rules text that appear in the set:

• “Search your library and graveyard for up to four creature cards with different names”

• “Otherwise, put a study counter on it.”
Kianne, Dean of Substance / Imbraham, Dean of Theory

• “Whenever a permanent entering the battlefield causes a triggered ability to trigger”
Strict Proctor

• “untap each creature you control, then tap any number of creatures you control”
Plargg, Dean of Chaos / Augusta, Dean of Order

• “Pay 10 life:”

• “Repeat this process six more times.”
Professor Onyx

• “Pests, Bats, Insects, Snakes, and Spiders”

• “Each mode must target a different player.”
Shadrix Silverquill

• “Whenever an opponent activates an ability that isn’t a mana ability”
Flamescroll Celebrant / Revel in Silence

• “where X is the number of cards in your library”

And finally, here are some creature type lines from the set:

• Creature – Turtle Druid

• Creature – Bird Warlock

• Creature – Frog Wizard

• Creature – Spirit Dwarf

• Creature – Troll Druid

• Creature – Eye Bat

• Legendary Creature – Vampire Warlock
Valentin, Dean of the Vein / Lisette, Dean of the Root

• Legendary Creature – Orc Shaman
Plargg, Dean of Chaos / Augusta, Dean of Order

• Legendary Creature – Dryad Druid

• Legendary Artifact Creature – Construct
Codie, Vociferous Codex

Find out the answers to (some) of these clues and other Strixhaven news on March 25th at 9:00 AM PT. Tune in either on twitch.tv/Magic or on our official YouTube channel.

Let the speculation begin! :teach:

This is interesting. I am imagining it will be the answer to the UR keyword question.

On that note, MaRo confirmed in a later post that the new evergreen keyword is a new keyword, not an existing keyword new to being evergreen.

Daunt (with or without that exact name) seems like a decent guess, but it could be something totally new, like when fight was introduced back in Innistrad. (Fight effects technically existed before then, but they were way less common.)

I kind of doubt daunt because the reason to keyword that would be they wanted to use it more and I don't see why would want another green (and...red?) evasion ability.

My money is on them keywording Lure.

CuriousHeartless's speculation sounded fun.
Spoiler

Okay, that was mostly commentary rather than speculation, but I still had fun.

That effect only gets printed on like two cards a year, though. Seems like too powerful of an ability to be printing all over place.

Likewise, double strike doesn't see a lot of appearances.

I accept that double strike is less frequent than most evergreen keywords, but it still appeared multiple times in all six sets currently in standard. Compare the 16 standard legal cards with double strike to the 3 standard legal cards with lure.

Lure would certainly be a flavorful keyword, and I don't think it's 100% impossible (the best argument would be that they'd start using it more frequently for whatever reason), but I find it unlikely.

It's possible they could keyword the more basic version of Lure we've seen spelled out a couple times "Must be blocked if able"

My impression is that the only ability that has been used relatively regularly that fits the bill is Daunt, which is core green. But it also isn't quite a common ability, I think it's been averaging 1 card per set recently. It also raises the question of what the secondary color would be. Red? I guess that would give RG an alternative to haste and trample.

Double strike also works better keyworded because you can offload the rules text whereas it would be messy written out. Lure seems less likely because it is like unblockable where it often appears in variations like "must be blocked".

more hints

Mark Rosewater sometimes says certain mechanics are unlikely to be keyworded because they don't appear often enough, and maybe he actually means they wouldn't want to use it more often, but as phrased, I disagree with the argument because keywording mechanics also leads to them appearing more often. Prior to lifelink being keyworded, it would appear like twice a year at most.

I’d be careful counting too much. Menace had under 30 unkeyworded appearances before being keyworded.

The MDFC being the Rowans would be badass

Evergreen keyword that's big.
MDFC with the same type on both sides? I had figured all the DFCs in the set would be permanent/instorcery. THe Planeswalker speculation is probably correct.
Good to see they're putting tourney winners faces on cards again. Is that not the coolest prize in MTG?
My guess for the futureshifted spell is Storm Entity. Seems like a mechanic we'd see here. Bonded Fetch has a decent flavor. Nix seems like the sort of thing you'd only add as a safety measure against something else in the set. Spellweaver Volute is probably in theme mechanically. I still think Storm entity.
So "pest" is a creature type now? Is that going to be just for cards that represent many small creatures?
Yay an eye bat!
“Repeat this process six more times.” - Calling it now, the sentence before this is "win the game".

Signal Pest Pest is a type but only on this one little card that I thought for years was a robotic ant and I had no idea why it wasn’t just an insect until I looked real close and realized it was a horrid gremlin with claws. But I doubt it has anything to do with that, and I assume pest will be used for kinda unidentifiable types of small Familiars, things that would get Horror if they were any bigger

They started doing this again last year with Fervent Champion.

The Pest type was first introduced with Nuisance Engine. It later reappeared on Signal Pest.

Well Liliana fills in two hints.

• a planeswalker you know, but not as you know them
Professor Onyx

• “Repeat this process six more times.”
Professor Onyx

The new keyword is Ward [COST] (Whenever this permanent becomes the target of a spell or ability an opponent controls, counter it unless that player pays [COST].)

It's basically frost armor but formatted as a counter, a la Valkmira, Protector's Shield.

It fits MaRo talking about wanting to pull back on hexproof.

EDIT: Article

Interestingly, it will be in all five colors but GWU will focus on mana costs and BR will focus on life costs, like Terror of the Peaks. This is not replacing hexproof entirely.
