D'aww <3 Loved the ending realization of the fundamental difference between them (though some cards may object) and the slight jab at the card's... misguided healing :D I was saddened by Fanny's loneliness in the menagerie; like, while not as beloved, I expected some other stuffies to have a personality! But maybe not enough of a soul to write poetry, or substitute Fanny's best friend...

Now I'm imagining Daneera finding this scribbled in a dusty note next time she picks up Fanny :V

Thanks for reading, Huey!
D'aww <3

Glad you liked it!

Personally, I liked how Daneera's "healing magic" was learning how to sew Fanny back up after their misadventures. :)

I was saddened by Fanny's loneliness in the menagerie; like, while not as beloved, I expected some other stuffies to have a personality! But maybe not enough of a soul to write poetry, or substitute Fanny's best friend...

Yeah, my headcanon is that they each have their own personalities, and especially when younger, on days Daneera didn't or couldn't go play in the woods probably conveniently located behind her house, she would have whole imaginary adventures with large selections of the menagerie. Daneera does say in "The Collection" that she loves all her animals, so I imagine they all have personalities. But this poem, ultimately, was meant to be about the relationship specifically between Fanny and Daneera, so I didn't want to delve too deeply into the others for this piece.

Now I'm imagining Daneera finding this scribbled in a dusty note next time she picks up Fanny :V

:takei:

How frightening would that be?

:D

Spoiler

Some assorted doodles and a bit of trial and error to define Sharaka's "geometric" profile.

I like the sketches a lot, particularly Orida and Sharaka having fallen asleep gaming. It definitely shows the closeness the two have, as I can't imagine Orida would be too comfortable doing that with most people. I can't really comment on the Sharaka trial and error sketches as art in general is completely out of my wheelhouse, although I do love the snarl/smile in the face on view. I also really like the "Sneaky Sneaky" peaking around the corner doodle, but I do have a question: Is that Daneera sneaking around with the embercat she eventually gives Beryl, or is this young Beryl, pre-accident, sneaking with her original? My guess is the former, but I just wasn't sure.

Thanks for posting!

It seems that I like imagining Sharaka sleeping with people, as I did something similar with Elphimas a while back :D (*Tryst smirks knowingly from the cheap seats*) Orida will probably vehemently deny that ever happening - Sharaka fell asleep first and she just closed her eyes for a moment - but that's just her. Sharaka grew up sleeping with her mother first and then with several other young viashino, so sleeping alone is weird to her - that's why Tryst comments about her restless sleep in the Grimdark turn: Sharaka reaches around when alone in a bed.

That's Beryl :D I figured that Daneera's parents realized early on that keeping her hair short was more convenient and she wasn't really attached to them to begin with? Tho I may be wrong on that account as I can't remember many remarks Daneera voices about her own appearance - nor many other characters, as Penelophine is the only 'walker I can remember that has more than a passing interest in her appearance and she doesn't wax lyrical in work or thought, to the best of my recollection. Her dossier itself describes her hair as dark brown and rarely brushed, which I assume implies cut short as well? Long hair requires pretty extensive care to survive Daneera's very active lifestyle.

(I should probably make some reference sheets to differentiate enough our girls so they can be more recognizable at a first glance, but I'm hesitant to make assumptions with characters that lack specific descriptions)

Ps. I'm considering to touch up Sharaka's canon height, and I was just reminded of how massive Dorn is. My Fight Club previous assessment is... inaccurate.

I have a tendency to not go into much detail in describing my characters because I like the readers to sort of form their own image in their minds, within certain parameters, of course. I have always envisioned Daneera's hair as long, though. In fact, in "Instinct," there is one fleeting reference to the length of her hair:

The innkeeper began boiling her water immediately, and within the hour, Daneera was enjoying her bath. She washed herself thoroughly, scrubbing off the dirt and grime of the forest as best she could. She paid particular attention to her long, dark hair, which usually suffered for her lack of attention to it.

I wouldn't expect anybody to remember that, and I'd have to read through her early stories, like "Planes of the Dual-Walkers" and Ruwin's "How to Trade a Planeswalker" to see if there are any more. But like I said, I like that different people have different mental images of different characters. Maybe she started growing it out around middle school/early high school?

(Didn't notice any description in HtTaP)
How often does she keep it tied? And could you give me some pointers about your other characters (like Orida's approximate height) if dossiers lack relevant info?

It's been a long time since I've read it. I should reread some of those early stories again.

How often does she keep it tied?

In canon or in High School? In canon, I don't picture her with hair tied up often. I would imagine that if she's doing something or moving somewhere that her more wild hair would be a significant detriment, she would tie it back, but otherwise, she's probably full wild child.

In HS, though, Daneera is a bit more socialized. My personal visual of her usually has her hair down (which likely just comes down to personal preference on my part) though I could certainly see her tying it back. Unlike her canon self, I do imagine she brushes her hair every day for school, though likely not when she goes camping (which is one reason she loves camping. She doesn't have to bring her brush!)

But again, as always, feel free to use your artistic license whenever you draw my characters. I'm always interested in seeing what you create!

And could you give me some pointers about your other characters (like Orida's approximate height) if dossiers lack relevant info?

I'd be happy to try to describe how they look to me, if you'd like. Just let me know who you are thinking of and which aspects of their description you are curious about.

As for Orida's height, I've never been entirely clear on average kithkin height. I've been picturing them as approximately two-thirds of human height. In "Whisperweft," two humans bump into Orida while seeming not to notice her, although that might be more a symptom of social status than height. In "Souls of the Unshriven," she is mistaken for a dwarf, so she's probably approximately dwarf-size, but that can vary widely, as well.

In her dossier, I describe her as: "somewhat short even by Kithkin standards, just barely under four feet tall." So I guess she's about 3'11" (about 1.2 meters)? That can work.

Remember my quest for a slice-of-life piece? Not sure I quite got it yet, but overall it's a step in the right direction. Not as depressing an ending as my last try, at least.

ordinary day (0.6k words, grimdark storyline)

It's always sweet to see Tryst's level of commitment to her friend and how genuine it is, even if Tryst is not the traditional image of "sweet."

Thanks for posting, Huey.

I know, right? I think it sneaks up to her too, sometimes.

(from an exchange with Barinellos, I can imagine the fridge ain't usually that bad of a mess, as she's raised by her mother; that said, said mother could be often away for work, or for... less legitimate reasons)

Thank you for reading and commenting, man, I appreciate it :)

With reference to the "Sacrifices" piece I wrote, wherein Orida has to go to church as part of her deal with her father, I just had a very strange mental image of Pendulum joining her one week, wearing his Sunday Best.

Now, that's an interesting image!

Lo and behold, the Wumpus at last!

Didn't look that creepy to me? I like how it's immediately obvious from their dialogue how much they know each other, and how this develops Daneera's family dynamics while keeping the elephant in the room still draped. A short comment, I know, but I'm already kinda late for work.

Thank you for sharing!

Lo and behold, the Wumpus at last!

I love that she's been "hunting" for the Hunted Wumpus. I also like that this is, potentially, an answer to a question Aaarrrgh posed a while back as to how the collection might have started. I like the thought that a lot of it maybe came as gifts from Daneera's uncle.

Didn't look that creepy to me?

Good, I'm glad. Uncle Istvan, being flavored on the card as a homicidal recluse, I thought might give the wrong impression of the sort of figure I wanted him to be for Daneera. I tried to show him as genuinely caring, and I think it's telling that Daneera is both genuinely excited to see him, and that she's the one who wants to hug him, which is usually not in her character. His unwillingness to stay around, combined with the canon card, I was concerned might make it seem like he's on the run or something, which I guess he could be. But his role model/almost fatherly relationship with Daneera was meant to be genuine.

I like how it's immediately obvious from their dialogue how much they know each other, and how this develops Daneera's family dynamics while keeping the elephant in the room still draped.

Yeah, I'm starting to develop a sort of understanding of what HS Daneera's family life is like, though I'm not entirely sure yet what everything is about. Still, it's kind of fun to see the pieces slowly tumble into place.

A short comment, I know, but I'm already kinda late for work.

Thank you for sharing!

Hey, short comments are still comments! Thanks for reading, Huey!

I have now updated the table of contents, so everything should be there now. I was several pieces behind, and I had neglected to include Huey's artwork, so they are now included, as well.
