Very nice. I don't quite get what Aloise and Sharaka are talking about at the very beginning before Tryst starts bringing up her stuff, but I really like the interactions here and the little jabs at one another. Your Tryst picture is very nicely done (I particularly like the little detail of the Christmas Tree earrings. It's such a minor touch, but perfect for the purpose). And, speaking of M:EM HS memes, I particularly liked the end of the piece and poor Beryl's conflagration.

Thanks for sharing, and happy holidays to all of the M:EM High School!

To be quite honest I didn't put too much thought into it, I just needed an exchange that could prompt Tryst's memory and posters -> ads worked fine. From the context I think it may be about felling pines to make Christmas trees or something? Unless Tryst's photoshoot is made well in advance and it's not such a relevant seasonal topic yet. I wonder what's Tryst's birthday.

I imagined a bigger cast for this snippet but additions would have either one-sided jabs (Antine, which I had considered for a line in which Tryst commented Sharaka's gift was that they let Tryst keep the outfit, and he pointed out it wouldn't really fit the viashino :V) or be completely uninterested in Tryst's picture (like any other kid caught ogling Raef's centerfold. Oh, that reminds me, he might have given her an in for the job?) It ended again with an all-girl party, but everyone interacts meaningfully and six is a good number for a cafeteria table. And yes, Beryl's "overload combustion" is such a cute and funny trope (and fittingly triggered by Sharaka, both an empath and a pyromancer) and such a sweet counterpoint with the canon loss of control of her powers I couldn't resist.

Thank you for reading and commenting!

I just realized I had never read The Collection, so today I remedied that and I loved to bits.

But take it as you will, my most appreciated part was Sharaka. I'm gonna overanalyze the crap out of it because... you'll see.

Well, thanks for reading and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm a big fan of that story, on a personal level, so I'm glad others enjoyed it, as well.

Nice! I like Tryst's relationship with Sharaka, and how it makes her occasionally act against her normal nature, at least to a point. And the thought of Sharaka cuddling up to her stuffed phoenix with her one arm in her hospital bed is an oddly sweet thought alongside the negative implications of the grimdark storyline.

Thanks for reading, Huey, and thanks for posting!

Question: who are the Pro Gamers in the M:EM High School? I can put down a pretty precise breakdown of Sharaka's skillz, but beyond that... probably Orida plays quite a bit?

sharaka's skillz

I'll have to give this some thought, but the idea stuck me that Lia Xin, the small, quiet girl who never really says anything and is mostly just into her artwork, is on-par with Sharaka for fighting games, because the image of the two sitting next to each other on a couch and Sharaka getting increasingly irritated at Lia beating her is very funny to me.

Denner would be shockingly amazing at rhythm games the second time he played a song. Like, plays them with his eyes closed and ears plugged good. Although, maybe not, because just being able to precisely remember the combinations and timing doesn't necessarily mean he has the physical dexterity in his fingers to actually pull them off.

Antine probably doesn't play video games. RNG wrecks him every time. :)

I bet Larasa plays a lot of the same kind of games as Sharaka does, but Morgan doesn't really play. He's more interested in the technical aspects of the game and how they work. He has a scary collection of Edutainment games, though...

I bet Orida used to play video games a lot, but her parents took the console away after she broke too many controllers and they heard a few too many "soul-damning" words coming from her room...

Huey, based on your video game skills post, I have created this little story! I don't feel I got Sharaka's voice quite right here, for some reason, so let me know if there's anything glaringly off about her, but I hope you and everyone else enjoys!

This got me thinking... coming soon.

I'm on the "maybe not" side. Denner is certainly used as a walking wiki for his favorite games and his only accepted role in trivia games is reading the questions :D He may or may not have a BIG account in a Nutaku-like site. (google warning: very nsfw)

I mean, fair. I have a friend like that. With that kind of temper, you take a second to ponder before inviting them for a game night.

I had a friend as a kid who was unhealthily competitive, and got unreasonably angry at video games. His parents did fairly well for themselves financially, but even they had to have a talk with him one time about his broken controllers...

Re:@the big break

@A New Challenger: I really like this story, particularly your handling of Lia. I think you do a good job of showing her emotion throughout the piece with some really cool word choice (like "beamed" in the second paragraph) and good body language (like the tapping her thumbs together). I like Sharaka shifting from being upset at being beaten to being accepting of Lia and asking her to team up. Orida's pretty mean to Lia here, but of course social niceties are pretty low on her list of priorities, and of course she gets stomped. I have an idea for a short follow-up story, but I'll need to think about it for a bit. But this was a lot of fun!

Thanks for posting, Huey!

good body language (like the tapping her thumbs together).

That specifically was born from the classic image of characters tapping the points of their indexes together, and the following realization that a shy kid would hardly drop something (the controller) she enjoys so much AND whose solidity might act as an emotional anchor while surrounded by people she doesn't know that much. (I wonder how Lia got invited, in fact?) So she tapped the fingers that are designed to have most free movement around it :D
(Also that scene at first was just a dialogue between the characters and Lia contributed via emoticons)

:censored:
Yeah, I wasn't too confident going there, with making fun of someone's disability and all, but I figured Orida might just think Lia's just very shy, which she kinda seems to be. Of course, instant karmic retribution evens things a bit.

It's a good piece alright, more than good, but it can be quite the whiplash from the more cheerful stories, and now I'm kinda sorry for subjecting people to this :V

EDIT: To bring some cuteness back, here's something inspired by The Collection!

Childhood Companions is amazing! I love it. Daneera is perfect here, full-on tomboy (which is dead-on, of course), and I love all of the little details like the scrapped knees, the torn T-shirt sleeve, and of course the twigs and leaves in her hair. And Fanny is amazing, too, from the button eyes to the various mending stitches, undoubtedly from Daneera playing a bit too rough with the toy and bringing it places stuffed animals were not meant to go, like the deep woods (where in all likelihood Daneera got most of her cuts and scrapes, as well!) I also just love the big hippo smile on Fanny and how it matches child!Daneera's innocent smile here.

The whole thing reminds me, as I suspect is part of the intention, of Calvin and Hobbes. Young Daneera is a very interesting stand-in for Calvin. Given what we know about canon Daneera, she wanted nothing more than to escape the world she lived in, and I suspect she turned to her imagination frequently as an escape from her stone-encased reality. I bet Fanny had a voice and a personality and everything; she probably "pushed" Daneera out of her treehouse ('cause child!Daneera definitely had a treehouse) once or twice. I bet Daneera's parents had to warn Daneera not to play too rough with Fanny, at which point Daneera demanded they have the same talk with Fanny, who "started it." I'm going to stop here, because this is way too much fun to imagine!

Also, even when I named Fanny, I never thought about the fact that it rhymed with Gale's nickname for Daneera, so that's really cool, too!

And all of that is not to diminish how cool Beryl and the Embercat look, either! I love the face-on view of the cat, and then the camera switch to show Beryl's stunned silence looking at, essentially, a piece of her past. And of course Sharaka little snark in the bottom corner is very appropriate, too!

Really cool work here, Huey! I love it. Thanks so much for drawing it and posting it.

Yep! I didn't use it as a reference but I definitely had this image in mind as I drew. It was kinda inevitable when putting together her strong love for the outdoors* and her having a favorite stuffie.

*not to project too much, but she may have loved going trekking with her parents? Like, something that helped her discover the undying love for nature, but whose memories got... bittersweet as things got worse. The image, after all, is meant to be an old photo with the subjects' names written in sharpie :V

You focus on the escapism side of the whole thing, and I totally agree on Fanny's full-fledged identity (and the hijinx that massive menagerie must have gone through? There's a goldmine there!) but in Calvin and Hobbes there's also the healthy expression of an untameable imagination, which I feel in Daneera's case is replaced (in part) by a strong drive to explore and interact with nature. And Fanny may have been the perfect companion to feel less scared or lonely when things got worrying.

So why stop imagining it? To write it, perhaps? :D

Does it? English pronunciation rules are **** weird :V

Now I wished I did it on three parts, 1) adolescent Beryl looking at the embercat 2) Stuffie close-up 3) teary-eyed child Beryl hugging it fiercely, to represent both how she feels about it and the actual memories it's digging up. But I'm not sure I'd have been able to do the idea justice

Thank you for the inspiration and the nice comment! I had considered to work the Daneera photo into a small scene like with the Tryst's pinup, but I didn't find a good idea for it... (yet? Who knows, though I wouldn't mind being beaten to the punch)

To be fair, it probably wouldn't rhyme. I've been pronouncing "Danee" the same as the name "Danny," but I suppose that doesn't ultimately make sense. I pronounce Daneera's name as "Da-NEAR-ah," so if the nickname came directly from that, it should probably be pronounced like "Da-KNEE" with the accent on the second syllable rather than the first syllable the way Danny is.

~shrug~ I honestly never worry too much about the pronunciation of fantasy names, especially mine. To each their own! :D
