Tbh I had to look up the furminator bit and THEN remember lab doesn't just mean laboratory :D After two obvious disconnections out of four words, I decided to keep away from it lol

I missed the whole exchange but this was my experience as I was reading over what I missed. I didn't know what furminating was (and I assumed you meant fumigating) and automatically understood "lab" to be short for "laboratory", so I took completely the wrong message away from the initial post.

I do NOT apologize for the shameless plug but my friend that did the beautiful Sharaka art I use as an avatar is doing a commission sale! He's moving out and taking 50% off his commissions until the end of the year, link if you want to check it out. I'll probably gush more about it soon in the happy thread because I'm getting some Storyteller art :D

I'm actually currently considering commissioning art for a scene that happened in my Pathfinder game, but have partly been putting it off because I don't really know how commissions work. It helps that I go do photoshop edits on art pieces to capture the look that I have in mind (because I mean it never leaves our little group so what does it matter) and I feel presenting that as a "reference" would be a little slimy. There's also the issue of whether to commission "test pieces" like for individual characters before commissioning something more complex.

Sorry to turn this into a mini-rant about me vs. commissions. they have a nice style and it's cool that they're having this sale.

--------

I kinda skipped out this week because it's been a lousy week for me. Work has been getting busier somehow, and one of our x-ray rooms went down (something got fried despite a heavy-duty surge protector) so it's been even worse, and between the weather and just dang needing to unwind and relax after work, I only got an average of 5 hours of sleep each night. I was feeling really extra-crummy on Friday and just started crying off and on for a few hours, unable to bear the weight of everything. Luckily I've got some friends in other groups that I can talk to instantaneously — no offense to you all, of course, but when I'm feeling that small, being able to talk it out right then and there instead of waiting overnight for responses is really necessary to bring my mood back up.

Also I introduced someone else to the Wanted anthology and I'm hoping that they like it.

Never a need to apologize, friend! We're here for you if you need us, but obviously getting what you need when you need it is incredibly important. I hope you're doing better, Luna.

I would imagine they will love it. It's incredible writing, and makes me miss Orcish and Ruwin all the more.

I have limited experience doing this, but from what I know:
-Having reference helps; in fact, supplying detailed description of the subjects prevents the artist to do character design on your behalf, which can be rightfully added to the bill.
-Using someone else's art for specific features might be a bit weird, but it might depend on the artist. As with most things, having a honest conversation before committing to it is a wise thing.
-Multiple characters can rack the price up pretty quickly, but that depends on the artist's pricing and the money you're willing to pay of course.
-Depending on the artist and the final price of the commission, they might be amenable to do a free quick sketch of characters before delving in the final piece. Again, the more accurate the description is, the less likely the artist is to go off the mark, and the artist may check with you after the basic outline and flat colors (my friend did*) to make small edits. If you ask to redo everything from scratch after following your instructions they might (and honestly should) bill you for it, obviously.

*I had him correct Sharaka's spikes outline and color, the eye color and maybe something else I can't recall right now, maybe the jaw barbs.

Again, the best thing to do is ask a possible commissionee (that a word?) about all that! They may make discounts for bulk orders if you want busts and a more complex piece with the same characters, who knows! Also, backgrounds are often a pain in the ass and/or time consuming, but every artist can tell you that :D

Oof, that sucks major ass. Glad to know you had the help you needed, and hope it gets better soon.

All that sounds fairly helpful, thank you. I've been browsing the hungry artists subreddit from time to time to see if there's anyone's art style that pops out to me as something I'd like to go for; I have a penchant for a particular high-quality style (kind of a comic book style) and expect the final price will be significant, but I do have the money to spend on it if I can get over the mental block of "but it's so expensive, though."

Tho it would be a cute bizarro concept to have hairy, sentient laboratories you had to take care of. A furry chocolate laboratory, however, wouldn't be very sanitary...

Hey a chocolate laboratory has to keep warm somehow. That is a neat concept though- a pet chemical synthesizer. I think HunterxHunter might have had something like that.

Alita Last Order also had a few ideas in the ZOT arc, with the deliriously funny Venus delegation. Wouldn't you like to sit in a living chair made out of your fave pit fighter's DNA? :D

I'll stick to petting my jovian cyborg cat in the shape of a box.

I even tried Googling chervy but came up empty handed. Who or what or both is a Chervy?

This cute square cat. The issues with finding images of him is that he's an extremely small character (both literally and narratively, I had to look up his name at first) and the main character is another cyborg with A LOT of cat symbolism.

EDIT: this is his introduction! (page 7) Chervy seems to be the transliteration of the Japanese rendition of the Russian name? Um...

I maybe should have posted again yesterday but kind of forgot: I had my second therapy session yesterday, and it felt like it actually helped. Talking with other friends convinced me to just go for it and not worry about the worksheets my therapist sent me and just show up to the talk instead (I mean, I scheduled the session, but you get what I mean). I'm still working through just trying to get across the way I grew up and all, but my probably-legitimate-but-I-don't-want-to-self-diagnose OCD tendencies were something I needed to actually bring up, so it was good to get out in the open, so to speak.

Good to hear! From the sound of it they're going better than my own first few sessions which, given how vocal an advocate I am for therapy, is definitely a good sign :D

I recently found out that the reason Brits sometimes say "Happy Christmas" is that some people used to think that the word "merry" implies drinking and partying in a way unworthy of the occasion.

...but not unworthy enough for Tryst, I suppose.

Yeah, it ties in with the phrase "to make merry," which usually involves drinking and other forms lively entertainment. I had never really connected it to the phrase "Merry Christmas" before, though, so that's pretty interesting.

@Tryst: I said this in the HS thread, too, but nice work. It sort of has that 1940s/1950s pin-up quality to it, and as I said elsewhere, I love the little details like the earrings. Thanks for sharing!

Neat! I wish we had more artists in our group. If I had more free time I might try dabbling myself but knowing me I'd probably just be doing the same piece over and over again until it was "perfect". Glad you posted it here, though!

some odd serious talk

Happy Festivus, everyone!

I hope everybody has had a more or less positive day today, and that things are as good as could be expected.

Maybe not much of a holiday message, but there you go!

Has anyone else read the comic Rat Queens?
I think I've had a bit of a revelation about some of the writing and I'd like to spin a yarn about what I think I've come to realize.

Can't say I have, tho a quick search told me Stjepan Sejic was involved so the art must have been pretty awesome.

The issues he did really stand out, but they had kind of a revolving door of talent. What I think I've bumped into head more to do with the writers and some behind the scenes drama.
