Of course, this story introduces things which are almost certainly not in line with the version of the Forgotten Realms we will see in MtG next year, but I still wanted to share this with you. This is the short story I wrote for the character I will start playing tomorrow.

I like it. A bit of an information dump in the first paragraph, but it's not so heavy as to turn me off to the story. I like Mindartis's frustration at being perpetually shown up by his siblings, and even more that unlike in more cliché stories, the siblings do not seem to be rubbing it in or doing anything specifically against the protagonist. The family pity for his perceived ineptness is a nice touch, too.

Thanks for sharing, Aaarrrgh, and have fun playing him!

Yeah, the exposition is quite heavy in this piece. Mostly because the main purpose of it was to present all of that exposition to the DM. I'm happy to hear it wasn't too bad, at least.

Thank you for reading and commenting!

I'm going to come back to this (hopefully, and hopefully soon), but since I seem to be out of the loop, I've got to ask, what's this about Forgotten Realms being in Magic?

Next year, we're getting a forgotten realms Magic set. I believe it will take the place of the core set.

It was a lot of fun! I'm planning to keep playing, at least for the time being. Most of the game was a single massive battle, but there was some good roleplay as well.

Very cool! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm in a 5e game now that's playing weekly, and I'm having a ton of fun in it, as well. We just hit level 8, and knowing our DM, ****'s about to hit the fan.

I'm playing a Tortle Fighter with an archer focus. My group's DM has great bows in his world, which are strength-based ranged weapons rather than dex based. So I'm basically a walking ballista. It's a seafaring campaign, so I just sort of hang out in the Crow's Nest and shoot things, at least during combat.

Tell you what, if you do a write-up of your character backstory, then this will be entirely on topic.

Huh. In a way, that's kinda neat. I probably would have loved having a "play Dungeons and Dragons: The Card Game", but I'm kind of left scratching my head over how this is supposed to mesh with the Magic Multiverse, when D&D canon already is its own multiverse.

Since I don't have a backstory for the character I'm currently playing (because I don't want the extra mental load right now), I could just link an old character that never saw play. I've tried off and on to adapt her to DM-less systems so that I can just explore a story with her myself, but it always seems like so much work just to learn how to do that.

@Luna: Apparently Tasha's Cauldron of Everything (the latest DnD source book) introduces a spell which allows you to travel to a different version of the material plane, this hopping from one multiverse to another. My guess is that they introduced it so that people could play the official adventures even if their campaign is in a vastly different setting, but considering that both Ravnica and Theros have DnD books, it could be justified. My guess though it's that it will be mostly unconnected and its own thing, except the audience expects planeswalkers in every set, so that could be tricky.

@Raven: cool! I'll try to read it later today.

Okay, I happened to read these today, so here's a bit of feedback:

@Aaarrrgh: I'm actually not normally one to care about half-elves, but I like what you've done here. There's a feeling that there's a lot left unsaid about the dichotomy between his parents' families, but I can see that wasn't the focus. I was kind of surprised by the voice not being the goddess herself, though I have to admit the whole story of the gods themselves isn't my cup of tea — one of my bugbears with the D&D setting is the way gods work — though that's mostly because of how cliché it feels, no offense. I'm not saying I wouldn't enjoy reading an epic tale about your newly-minted priest, but I'm too used to evil MacGuffins to be too excited about it.

@Raven: I really like how you manage so many twists in such a short piece. You focus for so long on the prisoner that I didn't expect it when he wasn't even the character, then again as Crow tells his story, and once more as the prisoner reveals his true nature. It's also a really clever way to get your character to directly answer questions that I assume your DM wanted to know. The ending also had me chuckling, which I didn't expect from the outset.

Thanks for reading, Luna! This backstory is not the one I wrote up for the DM, although the information is all the same. The original was much more vanilla and textbook, whereas this one I wrote more like I would write an actual story. I decided early on to have the narration focus on a different character rather than Crow, partly for the twist, but mostly to look outside the character for a few moments. I've been playing Crow for about three months now, so I thought a perspective character would be a good idea. The character of Besdrin is not a character from the campaign, and this interaction is set maybe a few months before the campaign starts. The alluded-to leak in the hull, however, was based on a random event we rolled up in session one. The rest of the backstory had more or less come out in roleplay in the sessions since.

Thanks for reading, and I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Good stuff as always, Raven. I like that you took the standard tragic orphan backstory and turned it up to 11 by having the same person practically orphan him twice. I also really want to know more about Besdrin now.

Yeah, while working with the DM about some of the details, he made it pretty clear that the ship's captain was a pretty horrible person. The one thing the DM asked for in our character creation was that everybody would be either a "slave" or a "prisoner" aboard the pirate ship at the start of the campaign. Due to my backstory, he made a technical exception to my character, as I was technically a part of the crew, but I was as much a prisoner aboard as anyone due to the unique relationship with the captain. But in my backstory, I wanted to highlight the horribleness of the captain, as it became one of the ways his character was established. But now, the ship is basically my mother, which was emphasized once we discovered she was sapient...

My DM, being a powergamer at heart, has a tendency to throw in some...extraordinarily powerful NPCs. My character has spoken personally to a magical dragon emperor, a titan (in the Greek Mythology sense), and a Goddess. He has a tendency to have remarkably powerful people show up in initially mundane roles (particularly shopkeepers, I've noticed). Besdrin is not a character from the campaign or of my DM's design, but he is sort of a nod to the things my DM regularly does: having crazy-powerful characters appear in otherwise lowly positions. I imagine he's some sort of Bard, going around and gathering stories he finds interesting or curious.

Thanks for reading!
