So apparently there is a bit of a lore-dump on Kasmina in the War of the Spark art book.

Image

Quote:
Kasmina

Kasmina is the leader of an ancient, secret order of Planeswalkers, a shadowy cabal with mysterious aims. Her larger goals are unknown, but her recent obsession is recruitment. Her prefered method is identifying what she calls "embers" - mages who possess a Planeswalker spark that has not yet ignited. She helps them discover their potential (even if it means causing a little trauma to force the spark to ignite), then indoctrinates them into the ways of her order.

It is clear Kasmina is preparing for a looming conflict, which she believes will make the battle against Nicol Bolas seem like a trivial squabble over petty [stakes?]. Despite her best efforts though, her activities are beginning to draw the attention of other Planeswalkers, and it seems that some kind of confrontation with the Gatewatch - Planeswalkers who believe in putting their magical abilities to good use - is inevitable.

Anyway, Kasmina is still at the top of my list for face-'walker of Stryxhaven, and it will be interesting to see how she corrals these "embers" together. Does she just hop around the multiverse playing teacher until she gets a student to ignite and then sends them to cult college at Stryxhaven?

You know, that blurb sounded kinda old school and like Magic's "classic" IP in a really satisfying way at first, but they lost me at "Gatewatch". If this is still what Magic is going to be all about going forward, I'm glad I stepped away from their lore and most of their new sets.

I mean, it sort of has to relate back to the Gatewatch on some level eventually. They are Magic's brand "avengers."

The inevitability of a thing doesn't make it any less unpleasant. Just because I'm going to have to die someday doesn't mean I have to like it.

She's another character that could have been properly implemented but wasted as everything in WOTS. I really like her concept as a villain, though I'd preffer if she was or since it seems like the ideal place for an evil cultist planeswalker villain.

Now, I ask you, how is she evil?
In what regards is opposition or confrontation of the Gatewatch grounds for being labeled evil?
By what moral authority is the Gatewatch acting?

She's evil because she's traumatising teenagers so she can turn them into slaves/peons/whatever. That is pretty immoral even if its for the greater good.

That's all a matter of perspective.
The greater good often comes at terrible costs.

I seriously doubt forced conscriptors are justifiable when less violent means like explaining what is going on work better. The Gatewatch are annoying but at least they hire consenting adults.

Please, the level of manipulation they exert on others is itself conscription. They just target those it would largely be effective against. Except Liliana, but she had her own agenda which didn't at all work out for all parties involved.

I for one, hope when the gatewatch and her clash, we see her and Ajani interact as they seem like nice foils to each other.

Like a lot of this will need context for what she is actually doing to the students and what she is preparing for, so far if she is needing to indoctrinate and use trauma is a real red flag that she isn't a "good" person. That said if she's needing a lot of planeswalkers I see she and the gatewatch likely being forced to work together in the end.

I wonder if she will be targeting the Kenriths and/or Teyo.

This thread escalated to "child soldiers are okay" really quickly.

Some people's hatred of the Gatewatch made them into things far worse than they are.

Who said anything about her doing this with children? The description just says mages with unignited sparks.

Which we assume are mostly adolescents at best considering she wants people to mold.

Which we assume...

You know what happens when you do that.

I really don't think it's cool to throw out insinuations of acceptance of "child soldiers" based on your reading of a very brief character blurb that in no way mentions children.

I regret nothing!

I agree this discussion escalated pretty quickly based on very little actual information. Also, hi Raven, cool to see you again in these parts! :)

I don't think she's actually initiating children because I don't see Magic going Ender's Game, but I was responding to the conversation in this thread. The original objection was not that she would not be working with children but that it was okay if she were.
