There's a lot of controversy over how to figure out who's scum. Games traditionally start out with argument over theory or over small things that probably aren't really that indicative of alignment, and then later as alignments and roles are revealed, people determine who's mafia by looking at who took what sides during arguments, and how they used their vote.

So speaking of real obvious questions:

Finger of Suspicion. It's an acronym that people use to denote that they are suspicious of someone without throwing their vote behind it, either because they feel it isn't major enough to warrant a vote, or because they think their vote is better used elsewhere.

ENTER DAY ONE

One by one, you trickle into the town square, the sky overcast and promising rain in the near future. Last night was not a comfortable night. You each had a sense of foreboding, that this chaos was reaching its peak. As has been the custom in Thraben these past few weeks, neighbors go about checking to make sure one another still remain among the living. Cries of anguish reveal the discovery of a child's body, slumped over the town fountain - yet another victim of Thraben's monsters.

One by one, you find yourselves drawn to the gallows; no body swings from the dreaded noose, but you know, without a shadow of a doubt, that the time has finally come. The shouts and snarls of Thraben's remaining citizens hold no mercy. Even blind with rage, the lynch mob is ready to act. You, of course, are at its heart, as if guided by the invisible hand of fate. Whether you trust in fate or not, the path ahead is clear to each and every one of you. The noose that sways slightly in the breeze is the only path to salvation now. While Avacyn remains elsewhere, the means of exacting revenge and meting out justice fall to you.

As you stand in silence, a few telltale raindrops fall upon your heads. Is it a favorable sign, that this madness will soon be washed away? Or might these be tears wept by the angels, in anticipation of some greater tragedy ahead?

Let us see.

Easy. You figure out who has an NLP. Then you calculate the radius of Thraben's Sun.
After that, you can vote for anybody.

(OOC:)

Citizens of Thraben!
A truly dark time has come for us all, and the time to delay ceases. However, I ask you now, what do we really know?

Blindly accusing each other will only help these monsters tear Thraben apart. We need to calm our emotions, and think with our souls, for they are what is left of our town.
Avacyn may have left us, but still our souls remain. While we remain in Thraben, we must remain diligent and pure. Let us not divide ourselves.

In light of that, and as desperate as times are, I propose we do nothing. We need to find proof that the very monsters reside in these walls, before we can go accusing ourselves. I propose we wait one more night, let these monsters act first and we'll know better who to hunt.
And in that night, pray - doubtful it may be - pray, that Avacyn can return among us by the morn.

I vote, to NO VOTE

That's exactly what one of the monsters would say!

I'm pretty sure dead people do mean that the monsters are currently here, and we need to figure out who they are. We can't skip voting, we have to find the guilty party and get them out of here so business may continue as normal! Why would you just abstain and let it continue another night? It has to end as soon as possible, and the only way is to vote and get it over with!

FoS: altimis

OOC: We are going to find out roles once the character has been lynched, murdered or otherwise out of the game right?

IC: So, it begins. Thraben begins to fall prey to the hunger that is greed. Save yourselves, is that all you care about!? Ensuring your own survival, for however much longer it may be!? Look at us! Look, each and every one of you, at what we've become. There are monsters inside all of us, waiting to be released. Anger, greed, glut... and others. Are you willing to trade honor, pride, and purity for some sort of carnal survival?

@altimis: Yes, that will be made known. I find it common courtesy to announce ahead of time if the set-up is a "no reveal" game, and given that this was designed to entice new players, I knew what I wanted to do.

I get a town vibe from Alt.

Purely based off of these latest few posts.

JD and Zinger are already fighting? Scum early distancing tactic?

Hmm, except doesn't it make sense to wait for a little more info before deciding? Or is there something about mafia I am missing?

It does seem weird to me that altimis would suggest not lynching at all. Maybe it is some mafia thing from px2 I'm not familiar with? I can't see how this would be an advantage though.

Unless I can hear some reason that makes sense not to lynch, [b]vote: altimis[/card]

Actually, there is one bad thing about this.
As town, our only chance of killing the monsters is the lynch during the day. As such, we should use it every time it is possible.

If you go with a no-lynch because of no information, you're inviting the monsters to kill the least productive member, still giving no information unless there is a cop who happens to find a monsters during the night.
That's not a very good chance.

Even if we will end up lynching a random townperson, the way the discussion evolved towards the lynch of that person and the way people voted for that person, in addition to the nightkill, gives a lot more information to be used during the later days.

Considering this is a normal 12-player game, I'm expecting no extra kills, which leaves us with the following:

Start day 1: 12 alive
Start day 2: 10
Day 3: 8
Day 4: 6, mafia win

So unless we miss 6 people in a row (lynches and cop investigations), monsters win. While that does not seem to likely with talking people, it does mean that every lynch counts.

Quote:

Normally, yes. Again, considering this is a standard game I think the odds are really big.

Technically the game hadn't started back then.
But you could stretch that question to almost any subject, and the answer would be (and is already given), that there is simply not a lot to go by in the first day. Any discussion where-ever is an interesting one because the amount of time people line up behind each other either consciously or subconsciously will help determine better who are monsters in the later stages of the game.

I'm with Fred, not getting a scum vibe from alt yet. It came off to me like someone that doesn't have a ton of mafia experience, which is fine because that's what this game is for.

However, I will second what JaC said, in a normal game like this, an early no lynch is almost always a bad idea.

Obligatory discussion prompting vote: Freddeh-scum.

Trying to suggest that JaC and I are scum distancing are ya? Trying to get the town to mislynch us are ya? Well it won't work!

Town vibes based on what, wanting to no-lynch or talking all fancy-like?

@Various questions: 3 mafia is standard for a 12-player game but isn't for sure.

No-lynching on day 1 is usually considered bad because it denies information. Some communities no-lynch once if it doesn't move back LyLo, but that's usually not on the first day, because it's important to get information early (votes will eventually pile up on someone and based on how people respond to that vote pile-up, their motivations can be derived, this is one of the earliest forms of solid information).

Roles are revealed on death on almost every mafia community. In Px2 it was expected that in a 12 player game there would be 3 mafia (one with a special ability). On the town side, there is sometimes a 1-shot vig, sometimes a cop or other investigative role, and sometimes a doc or other protective role. I think 5-7 vanillas and 2-4 power roles was common for town. Those are just rough numbers to give you an idea of what the game set-up MIGHT look like.
