COMING SOON
You thought 2020 was a big year for Magic? You haven't seen anything yet.

Coming in Q1 of 2021, we're heading to Kaldheim, Magic's take on what a world inspired by Vikings might look like.

AZURE NOTE: (Skybreen)

Next up is Strixhaven, the most elite University in the multiverse!

Then, in the most exciting mix since peanut butter and jelly—Adventures in the Forgotten Realms is the first Dungeons & Dragons-themed Magic set. Releasing in place of what would be a Core Set, Adventures in the Forgotten Realms is going to excite fans of both Magic and Dungeons & Dragons!

Image

After that, we're going back to a plane so nice we're going to revisit it twice—Innistrad! The first set will feature Werewolves, and the second will focus on Vampires. There are more details to come, but definitely start working on your Sorin cosplays now.

Those are just the sets releasing straight to Standard—but there's more for fans of Commander, Modern, and more!

First up, Time Spiral Remastered is coming in 2021. This new way to experience Time Spiral will feature fan favorites from the beloved set as well as cards printed with the old border, for all of us long-time fans out there. Here are some examples:

Then, we'll be suiting up for Modern Horizons 2 and, as alluded to before, this print-to-demand set will feature all five enemy fetch lands! In Draft Boosters. At rare. Plus, ya know, a ton of other cool stuff.

So......2021....gonna be an interesting year.

Oh they're full on crossing the streams now. Intriguing. Especially in place of a core set.

Eh, a Core Set would be one of the main ways they could do a full-set release and get away with it, since Core Sets are pretty much just a grab-bag of reprints and stuff that mostly doesn't matter flavorfly.

Not really looking forward to Kaldheim. Snow is one of the worst mechanics, I hope they use it as a chance to introduce meaningful counterplay and opportunity cost to it. Not looking forward to the exploration of my heritage's tropespace, I'd much prefer the wotc of a decade ago handling it.
Cautiously optimistic about the harry potter setting.
Absolutely hate the D&D tie in, I don't want officially endorsed cards featuring other IPs in the game, whether that be Godzilla or D&D.
Kind of grown tired of Innistrad, two sets seem excessive and it doesn't sound like they do it because of storytelling concerns. That said, I like flashback and madness as mechanics.
That Path to Exile is the most beautiful card I have seen in a really long time and I want it badly. It's criminal how much better all of those cards look in the old frame.

All things considered, I'm not impressed.

Notably, the two Innistrad sets are both scheduled for Q4 2020. And they're both full size. This is gonna be a weird standard.

Excited for Kaldheim. If I didn't want to avoid buying un-rotated sealed product right now, I'd say they'd have to screw up hard to have me not get a box. As-is, I predict I'll be keeping my eye on quite a few singles for EDH, doubly so if they bring back Snow.

Don't know about Academy Plane. Could go any way.

Forgotten Realms set... please give me a 12-mana sorcery "Karsus Avatar" that does some insane thing that will probably be game winning if not disrupted but will almost certainly lose you the game if hit by a spitball worth of disruption in exactly the wrong place. It's a specific request but I really do want it.

Not hype for a double dip of Innistrad focused on Twilight teams. Call me when we get the rise of the Skaberen.

They have realized that having new product out for the holiday season could be good for business. The second Innistrad set is the Winter set which would previously have been released in February. So It's not an extra standard set, it's a change in release schedules.

Did they confirm somewhere that it's replacing the normal 2022 winter set?

Yup. Hipsters of the Coast quote Mike Turian in their article about the announcements: “While both are slated for the latter part of 2021, there are still four Standard sets per rotation-year, we just shifted the timing around slightly,”

Okay, thanks. That does make a lot more sense.

100% this.
I died a little inside when I saw that announcement. All this does is push me further and further away from Magic.

On the one hand, I like the idea of getting some gelatinous cubes or beholders, heck, even owlbears.
On the other, I DESPISE Forgotten Realms.

... So, I'm excited for the random Monster Manual inclusions*, but Drizzt can go die in a fire.

*Ye gods I hope there's a double cycle of dragons. Or even just the chromatics.

There was also an announcement that modal double-faced cards (mdfcs) will be in the next 2-3 sets.
They were originally only in Strixhaven, but Zendikar Rising borrowed them for spell/land.

They won't repeat spell/lands, but we could start hypothesizing for Kaldheim and Strixhaven.
My guess is Kaldheim will have snow/non-snow mdfcs OR creature/equipment mdfcs.
