Oh, I know how hard it is to see people you love slip into a mentality which you are not comfortable with. My wife and I have had a few similar conversations with her aunt, who is otherwise a lovely person and someone we both like a lot under normal circumstances. It's been hard.

I mean, that's a sadistic choice for you no matter what. Do you cut a die that matters a lot? Do you just try to never discuss politics and accept that any probeny of yours would have that stereotypical un-PC uncle at family gatherings? For me, it would probably matter how that person was OTHER than when engaged in political talk. But then, I've long held the "Don't talk politics, religion, etc." opinion in meatspace, and I know all too well that only holds if everyone is willing to hold to the Pax "Everyone keep your ideas to yourselves"

It's just the sad state of our world today. Society is looking a lot less civil. I don't have any answers unfortunately. I can only hope that the social tide shifts.

Caster Chronicles sounds a bit like Pokemon or Duel Masters with their "prizes" and "shields" instead of hp.

I'm familiar with neither Pokemon nor Duel Masters, so the Orb mechanic both as a "life" tracker and a rubber band mechanic was very new to me.

Duel Masters/Vanguard is roughly the same game as that magical girl one. From what I can remember from my childhood, you have 5 shields, can play cards as lands of their respective faction, and can attack shields or tapped creatures.
I think Pokémon is the reverse. You gain one of your six prizes each time you defeat an enemy Pokémon, so it's actually a feedback loop instead of rubber banding.

I did. I threw a water balloon, but I failed to take air resistance into account.

Regarding the Pokémon and Duel Masters CCGs:

Mown is correct about the Pokémon CCG: it's a snowball mechanic.
I mostly know the OG rules, but I think the core rules have remained largely untouched for the last 30 years:
Spoiler

Mown also has the gist of Duel Masters down, though back when I played the "rubber band" part of it was way under-developed.
I believe a lot of the rules of Duel Masters/Kaijudo has changed over the years, but these are the basics from when I played:
Spoiler

IIRC, the Naruto card game also did the same thing as Duel Masters' mana, but of course it was called chakra, and you had to discard your chakra to use it, which always struck me as paying 2 costs for every card. I may have to play my DS game to refresh myself on how the Fullmetal Alchemist card game worked, but the interesting thing it did was that there were 3 character stats and actual combat wasn't the main focus; the main focus was having more of whichever stat the current location cared about to win "clues" to the philosopher's stone (the game's win point system). I'll have to remember to dig up some articles about the My Little Pony card game, because it actually had some really interesting mechanics (including a location-win-point-system like FMA) and was made by some veteran designers, but it completely failed because it didn't know who it was selling to -- it was "too girly/kiddy" for the adults who would understand and enjoy the mechanics (plus all the art was just screenshots from the show, so cheap as f***), and it was far too complex for the kids whom it was ostensibly aimed at, including completely unexplained deckbuilding issues.

Oh, and eventually I've got to make the time to write more about L5R.

I apparently go from pale to normal, but do not actually get much in the way of a tan,

It's interesting that when faced with an ultimatum and nothing to lose, some productions decide to just go all in and almost unintentionally create something that saves itself.

So, how's everyone been hanging in there?
I was supposed to start work again today, but it got pushed back.
Can't say it upsets me too much.

My mom's brother isn't doing too hot. He's essentially a stranger to me, but it's been a bit tough on her, particularly since they tended to get in fights more often than not.

In still other news, I've been watching the Umbrella Academy

Hanging on. 2020 was absolutely the year for my hermit-like lifestyle to pay off.

Been playing the hell out of Factorio. It's quite engaging. Could probably whip up another post on FoW or TCC if anybody's interested, maybe a deck breakdown of something I've played.

Reminds me a lot of Preacher, favorably.

But in the same moment it also really makes me wish for a few other adaptations.
Like The Wicked + Divine and some others I could name.

"Hanging in there" sounds about right. I basically haven't cooked anything all week (not counting my simple breakfasts like scrambled eggs or oatmeal w/ fruit) and have somehow managed to get by because of leftovers from work. Also I've entered back into a phase where I can't muster up the energy to do my dishes during the week, though I've managed to sleep just well enough to not need caffeine (ignoring the times I fell asleep during lunch break).

Also that "poisoning myself" thing I did last week may have actually been heat stroke? After feeding my starter a few times it doesn't actually have the signs of having gone bad, and the day before I had to call in I was mowing in what would turn into 100F heat later in the day (50% humidity, IIRC).

I'm also considering joining in on an Attack on Titan rewatch, and tank my reddit karma in the interest of playing devil's advocate "the hater." I was initially going to back out of it, but I had a decent conversation with two people that, while they still loved the show, wanted to hear more about my issues with it, so that was a pleasant experience. Also I think my old googlebloggerblog where I originally wrote many paragraphs about how much I hated Attack on Titan seems to have disappeared, so this could be a good opportunity to re-form my thoughts on it, and the series as a whole. As I was doing some "advance homework" for it (i.e. watching some episodes before the rewatch starts), I came upon a new realization, about how Japanese the story of Attack on Titan is. It's tied in to Pause and Select's video series about portrayal of apocalypse across the eras of anime, since I've thought about that video a lot since watching it. Basically, Japan's unique history with big disasters like the atomic bomb ties in really closely to the imagery in AoT -- and I think WWII and the bombings are especially relevant to the imagery, moreso than other disasters like the Touhouku/Fukushima disaster. I mean, the titans themselves even look human, for Krokt's sake.

Hanging on. 2020 was absolutely the year for my hermit-like lifestyle to pay off.

I'd definitely read them, if you're interested in writing them. I know I want to write more about L5R, but I haven't made the time.

While I was on my trip, I had an interesting... epiphany isn't the right word, but observation.
We were passing through a town we might have lived in when we moved, and it made me reflect on the paths not taken. How I would unquestionably be a different person and how who we are is shaped by where we've been because that's where the people who change us are.
But in my solipsistic musing, I took a certain solace in knowing that there would be parts of my life that wouldn't have changed, that some very precise moments would have still taken place and how much of an effect those single points in time had.
Because some things happen in places you go to, and the things that happen then are based on the people you know rather than where they live.

As you may have noticed, I'm being a bit absent around here. There are a few minor technical issues, but the truth is I've been drifting away from the M:EM from multiple fronts. I don't play Arena anymore because the Standard meta has been terrible for the longest time, disconnecting me from the game itself, and I've been finding myself absorbed in a new original project.

Said project, now called Dragonslayers, was born as a setting for roleplaying campaigns, but as I kept thinking of characters to put on the PC's side... those characters started interacting among themselves, and forming half a shadow of a plot by themselves. I don't remember ever tackling such a potentially long story with such spontaneity (while one of the reason I've been stuck creatively around here was having a decent idea about what to write but no inspiration to do so) so I want to follow this thread to see where it takes me.

I'll keep wandering around here from time to time, but let's just say I just replied to a DM that was sent to me two weeks ago, so... yeah, don't rely on the quickness of my contributions :D

PS: Helltaker is a little gem for puzzle-lovers who would like to collect a bunch of cute devils for their wholesome harem, check it out for free on Steam :V (really, there's nothing explicit, it's just a quick fun romp)

I'm always interested to hear about game mechanics. I spent much of my life aspiring to be a game designer, and I've thought up more than one card game. I reeeaally need to start DMing, but there are a lot of things to do, things to learn and other ways to procrastinate. It sometimes feels like some kind of reverse miracle that I never got heavily into tabletop RPGs- I've been fascinated since I was a kid and had a friend who had a bunch of 3e D&D books that we'd look at together. I'm not sure if the idea of playing ever came up seriously; I think we were intimidated by the prospect of actually running a game. That and my dad was not super hot on my geekery and I realize now that the shame he instilled is still very much with me. :(
