I'm interested in joining, but have a few concerns. Firstly, I just went back to to my full-time job this week, so I'm worried I may not be able to devote the kind of time to this as you might be expecting. If we only need a few paragraphs a day, I might be able to swing that, but if you're expecting heavy investment with a lot of back-and-forth, I'm not sure if I can handle that.

Secondly, I am really new. I have about 20 hours of TTRPG experience put together so far, and all of that's been through a few opening sessions of 3.5/PF. I have next to no knowledge of 5e and will have to learn it as I go.

Thirdly, I have a few questions about your rules.

TyranntX wrote:

You strongly have me reconsidering just for this. I have made many a character based around a pun or referential humor, like a jinx-based catgirl witch named Blair Salem, or an earth pony druid named Simple Necessities and his bear companion, Blue. I think trying to have a "super serious" campaign by way of punishing players and saying "no jokes allowed" is doomed to failure, personally. I get that you may want a darker overall tone, but this rule feels... I want to say "immature."

As someone who hasn't played 5e, I have approximately no idea what this means.

There are a LOT of pdf character sheets out there. Maybe it would be best you specify which one you'd like us to use (particularly because, as I said before, I haven't played 5e and wouldn't know what would be a good one).

I've relocated this setup thread to the setup zone @ viewtopic.php?f=25&t=26212 because that's what the setup zone is for.

Carry on, just over there.

-I'll take that proficiency in Survival
Drawback: Oblivious, Permanent -2 to WIS. Permanent Disadvantage to all WIS checks and saves.
Fear: 3-4. Pyrophobia (Fear of Fire)

Now I just have to find my 5e books and look up the races, and I've never actually made a PDF, so we'll see how I do with that.

Ouch, those Stats are gonna hurt early on, I just know it

Currently on the fence about joining, gonna share my thoughts in the chance putting them in writing and later interactions may help me in my decision. Note that everything below will express my humble (kinda) opinion and will be mostly tied to my personal taste. If I happen to slight someone in doing so, I apologize in advance.

Character creation: Hmm, not a huge fan of random perks that heavily influence gameplay, tho if class can be chosen afterwards I could probably manage...
It may force me to study classes I didn't touch yet, or that I wouldn't be particularly interested in, in order not to cripple myself.
I was interested in playing a Warlock or Fighter (a Human Battle Master, to be precise) to test them out, but the latter would probably end up similar to Aaarrrgh's and the former may end up covered by TPmanW*... it wouldn't be a problem with huge parties (which this campaigns aims to have), but small parties (which it could happen to end up with) without a well-rounded comp often lead to painful experiences, and the campaign promises to be punishing. A Bard would be my safe choice ordinarily, especially with its 5e versatility, but I'm already playing one in another 5e campaign and I wouldn't want to cross wires, so to speak.

*It also sounds like a campaign where no matter your allegiance Warlocks would get a lot of pain their way through their otherwordly bond.

Tone: it's clear that the atmosphere is probably gonna be very bleak (adding the Sanity stat in a game like D&D is in itself a pretty dire omen) or at the very least pretty intense, which I'm gonna have to evaluate for my mental state, but outright discouraging jokes (badness is quite subjective, after all) makes me hesitate. After all, humor is one of the way through which people survive pain, and while endless strings of out-of-place pop references (which should be extremely limited in any immersive campaign anyway IMHO) and puns can ruin the mood, levity adds contrast to make the dire notes of stories hit harder and nervous jokes can be a good way to portray a character nearing their wits' end. But maybe that's what you were meaning by that rule, and I'm "arguing" against someone who already agrees with me.

PS: Wouldn't this thread be more at home in the Setup Zone?

okay let's take this apart the best I can...

first off would be your concern's on the perks and flaws system, You may pick your class after as I'm not THAT sadistic (or at least I won't be for this campaign). They are just a means to put one of my weird spins on DnD, hence the seventh stat (which is going to play a big role in the story)

second will be talking about warlocks, how you get your power isn't as problematic as you would think. Due to some story elements I cannot disclose, the alignment of many creatures has shifted. A Black Dragon may be more inclined to fight for good, while a gold one may be bat-sh*t insane and want to wipe out out all life on earth. A Beholder may not be as Xenophobic as others, while a unicorn may not like to be around people. This is a decision I mad to allow for more flexibility for character creation with the added rules to this world.

The third would be the jokes, you can make them... just don't make them too corny... something in this world might not like it ;) (the penalties could be as harmless as [You lose 5 lbs of weight] to as dangerous as [you made one creature more powerful], or evan as absurd as [you trip don the next flight of stairs]... i'm not against humor, just groan inducing "dad" jokes)

The last point is on the Tone... You are correct. this will be a bit more morbid than some campaigns (though I think Curse of Strahd may still be pretty nasty too), so if you are of the feint of heart... then this may not be for you... Because things CAN and WILL get really dark.

Hey! I'm interested in this. Right now, though, I'm thinking of a rather odd character: a warforged sorcerer, probably with one of the Xanthar's Guide to Everything origins like Storm or Shadow. I have a few questions related to this, particularly with regards to the Warforged race

Q1: If you'd decided, what's the lore of Warforged in this setting? Are they Ancient, Traditional, New, Emergent, or Unknown and do they typically belong to any particular faction?
Q2: If I happened to roll Perk 7, Fasting or Disadvantage 7, Gluttonous, would they be rerolled (because warforged have 0 need of those things to begin with), stick for better or worse, or something else?
Q3: For our character creation reroll, do you have to choose to reroll at that step of character creation or can you go back and reroll it at the end? (for instance, if my stats feel anemic but acceptable, can I go back and reroll a low stat after seeing my Perk/Shortcoming and accepting them as OK?)
Q4: As something of an oldschool player, I'm used to rolling stats and then picking what to do with them. Would it be permissible to finish Stat/Perk/Shortcoming rolls and then revise choice of such traits as Class before finalizing them? (For instance, rolling Smart and Ugly and deciding that maybe wizard, rather than Sorcerer, might be the better career path)

Thank you for showing your interest. Let's see if I can help you...

A1: Constructs are a bit... odd, in this world. Since there is a super technological advanced race in this campaign (The Saurians), A Warforged can be as primitive as an amalgamation of rocks and dirt... To as advanced as a state-of-the-art android. They've been around for a long time, so aren't anything new.

A2: if you got Fasting fr your Perk... Then that's useless to you and nothing happens... 7 as a fault however means that you will need sustenance to survive even if you wouldn't usually... For a Warforged, maybe some kind of magic battery that needs to be charged every once in a while. Or maybe you were built off the remains off of something that used to be alive? It's really up to the builder, but if it's something you don't like you can reroll it... you do get ON free one for anything of your character... on that note, if you get a perk that conflicks with a drawback... they neutralize each other and both are rendered null... So save for your fear and sanity stat you'd play as you normally would.

A3: I recommend you roll everything first, then choose what you ant to re-roll if you see something you don't like, that way you can try and make it count for something... Assuming the RNG gods like you.

A4: As Someone who plays that way myself... yes... You may.

I'm interested in joining, but have a few concerns. Firstly, I just went back to to my full-time job this week, so I'm worried I may not be able to devote the kind of time to this as you might be expecting. As one of our other players have mentioned, you can find a free .pdf file download here

https://www.dungeonmastersvault.com/

From the looks of it it's very user friendly, and even has 5e available.

5e is very different from 3.5... though it works about the same with stats and (I think) races... Just let us know what it is you'd like to do and we'll help best we can.

Characters like that are perfectly fine, there's a tiny lizard like creature named "Gadget" in the story... and he's an inspector (technically an investigator but you get the idea)... it's phrases like "Singing spider pig, while a anthro-pig character uses spider climb" you need to lookout for, have fun with your characters... just be witty with humor... as I said you CAN make them, strange things will just happen in game if you do (as I've mentioned)... It's not "a rule" as it is a warning.

As for your commitment... so long as you can be here for important events, that's all we ask for (though I would strongly recommend being careful out there given what's going on)

That's 18 (default), 16, 15, 14, 10, 9
Wise, Ugly, and afraid of cats

The stats seem pretty alright, I've got three good bonuses and could probably eliminate the penalty somewhere. Statistically, rerolling the 9 is likely to garner improvement, but not much. Wise isn't max synergy if I go sorcerer, but I could play a class that gets more out of it or use it to eliminate a weakness.

Therefore, it stands to reason that I should reroll my shortcoming. There, I have a 1/10 of no change, a 1/10 of having to rethink Warforged if it hits -con, and an 8/10 of it being less crippling to the concept I wanted to go for.

Shortcoming Reroll

The dice gods have spoken. I'll take the numbers, brew a character concept, and probably come back with the pdf.

Ok, pondering about unknowns has never been my strong suit, so let's see what numbers I'd be working with.

Stats

Perk, Shortcoming and Fear, in this order

EDIT1: Those are really solid stats! While Light Sleeper isn't ideal for someone who probably lives in melee, it's a closer regeneration mechanic to 3.5 so I don't have to change my outlook on damage that much, and it can be interpreted as nightmares which has cool narrative potential. Fear of bridges... I can work with that.

I'll just reroll the 11, everything else looks fine to me.
Huey Nomure rolled 4d6b3 and got a total of 11:
3, 2, 4, 4

EDIT2: The dice don't take well to criticism, apparently :D

I made the PDF, but you can't attach files to the PMs on the forums, so how do you want me to get it to you?
I couldn't figure out how to get that survival proficiency from my perks onto the character sheet though.
My perks and such are listed in the character description of the PDF.

Also, I took Rat as my zodiac sign. We're supposed to take different ones, so you guys are all stuck with lame stuff with dragon or whatever.

Edit- Oh cool, I see Huey found how to automatically take the best 3 of 4 rolls.

You could upload it to google drive, and post the link to the file here on the topic of your submission... Or at least that's how I'd do it if I were a PC. I'm new here so, i'm not sure if that's an option here

Nightmares could work, as NPC's have been having them a lot as of late

Dungeon master's vault doesn't allow custom languages as far as I can see, so I'm going to put deep speech on my character sheet, but it's actually hell speech.

While the stupid flaw works ok with the build I'm going for, I don't like it for the character flavor I'm leaning toward. But rerolling it could land me with something that could actually cripple me, so I guess I'll do my lowest stat roll instead.

Spoiler

Yay, went up one point. Well, I can work with this. I'll still be able to keep all my stats at 10 or higher, and with my perk I should make for a pretty decent tank.

Just need to fix that score and add some fluff details to my character sheet and I'll be done.

How do you feel about characters already knowing each other before campaign starts?

I have a PDF. The forums don't allow attaching it, so I'll link the Dungeon Master's Vault Page Here and upload the pdf it generates to a hosting/sharing site on request.

TLDR I made a Warforged Monk with the Hermit background.

Longer Thoughts

Also I just remembered the Zodiac sign thing. I will choose Snake.

They would need to have a good ingame reason to, perhaps you are a tag team of mercenaries? Or maybe something else? So long as it's consistent with the other member(s) of the party I'll be fine with it. Though given the Nature of our warforged character I doubt you will know EVERYONE from the start.

I've looked over your character, and I didn't see anything that would cause any issues. So they are approved.

Maybe not, but having the option is nice :)

Sounds like something the PCs should do in the OOC forum. And... it is done!
It also might be worth setting up a single Google drive for everybody to put their campaign stuff in.
