That's because they're running Lurrus, no? The one Rakdos sacrifice without Lurrus has 4 Mayhem Devil (albeit only one Woe Strider).

I don't understand the lack of Woe Strider. He's the only free sac outlet we have (right?). The scorpion is nice, but its not causing lethal on its own, especially post sideboard.

If you go by the measure they always seem to lean back on; If it becomes an issue of either EVERY deck runs the card or some sort of hate for the card then it probably deserves a ban. Then yes, they'll probably ban (or change) the mechanic. As long as the change they make does not effect the printed reminder text then there is still room to make changes. Example; they add to the rule, "If you start the game with a companion you skip your first draw step." (not my idea)

Companions will be banned for sure, they are absolutely OP.
Lurrus is eating all the older formats... and it´s gonna get old rather fast, could you imagine a full 2 years cycle with Lurrus in standard?

lol, oh man that taste sooooo sweet. i haven't had a drink from this type of talk in a loooong time. Hakeem used to throw that kind of shade around all the time, before him it was mobius. So glad Vert is here to keep up a proud NGA tradition.

Okay, so I have been playing more, and I like the Meta.

Several decks can win quickly if there is no disruption, but they are all a bit Gimicky.

Gyruda is great, but Cage and Counters are pretty good against it, not to mention hush bringer being pretty rough to it.

Cycling is pretty deadly, but Narset and a counter mostly shut it down. If you do not have a quick answer though, this deck can be very tough to deal with as teh fox grows.

Winota can turn the tide with a few hits on Agent, but again, very reliant on Winota.

RDW is still a thing.

Fires is really good now, and with a great draw it can effectively win T5, but generally a bit longer game.

All of the above decks can win T5 (or T4 in some cases) without disruption.

Then you have Temur Reclamation. It looks at the long game and looks to disrupt others. I kinda like the deck, but a bit too dependent on Reclamation for my tastes. I have not played it a ton though, just against it, so it may be more resilient then I think.

Lurrus decks are ironically playing the longer game. I mean, they can win quickly, but generally you can stall the ground attack but they have a sense of inevitability. Unlike most low mana decks, they can recover from board wipes well.

Rakdos sac w/ Obosh can be fun, but seems just a tad too slow compared to some of the others. Maybe I just have not played vs the tuned versions, but it seems that the other top decks are just a 1/2 step ahead.

Flash decks are still around, and I think the standard Simic is a bit better then Dimir. They seem like they should do well with the counters and such, but seems like too many decks are too deadly now and if they miss a threat they are in a bad way. Games vs them seem very one sided. Either they have complete control and I lose, or they lose control and it is a cake walk. I think that is why I dislike playing against these decks so much. They generally do not come back as well as some decks, so there is less back and forth in the games.

IMO, there is a good amount of diversity out there, and there are several decks I am not even mentioning.

I think Companions are not a huge problem, but they will have to be careful how they deal with them in the future. They remind me a bit of planeswalkers when they came out. IMO, they will have to either continue making Companions or make then unusable for older formats. If they just leave with the ones we have now, it will restrict too many decks to just that small pool of cards. Just my opinion, I could be completely wrong.

Anyway, they do add a power level to the deck, especially if you don't need to build around it and can just tack one on to a deck that already meets the requirements. I mean, at the very least you get an extra free creature you can use at any time. I actually think that because we have several usable ones, they kind of level the battlefield. If we only had one good Companion, that would be bad for the meta, but with so many, the meta remains diversified...just at a higher power level.

So, I have finally settled on a deck. Jeskai Control. I avoided fires because I wanted the ability to use counters since a counter can severely hurt several decks, and I just prefer the playstyle. The Kill is Godzilla, Doom Inevitable as it is never a dead card. I tried Shark Typhoon, but too many times I felt like I just had an over costed flash creature. Sure, it is great vs Teferi, but I want more then an anti Teferi card. I also have a big Chandra mainly for counterspell decks, but adds another sweeper and win con. Narset superkick is another wincon, and can cycle dead cards. Last wincon is Kahreeara. Remember when I said sometimes you can have a companion because, why not? That is the case here. A free extra creature that barely helps your deck, but a free 3/2 is better then nothing.

Anyway, this is a good meta so far. Maybe I will change my mind if I ever make it to high mythic, but so far, so good.

I’m liking Jeskai control too. I like cycling Godzilla wincon. I like Narset.

Funny, I had been thinking sharknado pulled most weight as discard burn with Narset’s -2. Card seems not great. Seems best as a meme play and not competitive play.

The only one I feel like i may have too many of is Little Narset. Not good vs Aggro, but very good vs many of the more control decks. Might swap for a third of the other Narset.

7 Sweepers may seem like a lot, but with the creature heavy Meta, it generally seems fine. Narset helps alleviate the issue a bit (Another reason for another one) and Clarion does have the second Mode which has been helpful to close out a game by putting you out of reach with life.

The deck really isn't a powerhouse, but it also really isn't weak vs anything besides perhaps a heavy counter flash deck (Which is why I added the Chandra. On a side note, if you cast God Doom Inevitable by cycling, bounce becomes almost useless vs it. You can recast at instant speed for 2 mana anytime AND you get another card out of it. Of course, getting to that 4th cycle is the issue....)

it is the type of deck I like. Fair chance vs everything and the ability to turn games around. I imagine Bo3 would have a good sideboard as well.

Theres a very good combo going on with Jeskai Yorion.

You basically only run Agent in the creature slot, then with Lukka you fetch for them.

So the combo goes something like this
T2 Birth of yoummama
T3 Teferi
T5 Lukka, sac the Wall fetch for Agent steal something
T6 drop Yorion, blink Agent and Teferi, steal another thing and next turn bounce Yorion with Teferi Draw a card and repeat.
You got also the white castle and Typhon for extra tokens.

The pile runs most of what Windervoid is already running, some of them run Fires, others splash for green and ramp.
I tested it and ... o boy its devastating and not so hard to pull, extra bonuses when you steal 3 things and start drawing 3-6 cards EOT

The deck looks something like this.
