If I submit a thread or a post and later decide I want it gone, how do I go about getting it deleted?

I just created a thread on this subject and then realized I may have answered my own question by clicking the delete button on the bottom right corner of the post on that thread. Doing so grayed out my post in the thread and the thread's title on the forum menu has [Soft Deleted] next to it. I have no idea what that actually did and if it deleted my thread or not because I can still see it if nothing else. (So if you see two of this topic, that is why.)

What does "soft delete" do and what does it mean if I want to get rid of one of my threads or posts permanently?

I think only mods and admins can permanently delete something, but the soft delete you mentioned guess your post/thread from other standard users, so it's functionally deleted.

The reason for this system is both that you should be able to change your mind and respectful a post you deleted, and also to make it impossible to post offensive content and then delete it before a mod sees it (you can of course edit it, but I believe they can also see edit history).

An actual mod would of course know better, but I think that's how it works.

another way you could erase your content is by editing the content out of your post. I'm not sure whether or not mods have access to a post's revision history.

To clarify a couple things:

1) If the thread is soft-deleted, then it should only be visible to you and the mods. We don't let users hard-delete posts for the reasons Aaarrrgh described. If other people can see your soft-deleted thread, please let us know, because that should not be happening.

2) Yes, mod accounts can see the edit history for posts.

But how do you know that person... isn't really a catfish?
If you have glaucoma it is possible just haven't noticed yet.
