This topic might blow up into a big conversation so i figured it deserved its own thread.

So I've been binge-ing Black Mirror these last few weeks and there have been 4-5 great episodes so far (I'm in season 4 right now).

One of the episodes that wasn't so great, Nosedive, i think might be the most profound cuz it's uber-realistic (I used "uber" there totally on purpose too), and extremely believable.

mjack actually made me think about it again as he references "unwelcome casual douchebaggery" in the off-topic thread. In the future society of "Nosedive", this doesn't really exist since the implications are too severe to make it worth it. So everyone is nice to each other all the time. However, it's pretty obvious that NONE of it is authentic, especially by those that are seen as 'the most nice.". This is a society i'd never EVER want to live in. Like, for me, i welcome Sixty busting my balls when i talk about my vapid dating life. It's a very human reaction and makes him, and the exchange feel much more real. Tells me more about him, and then I get to know him better, and our relationship either deepens or widens apart. All normal parts of human interaction.

So in Nosedive (this sucks if people haven't seen it, but maybe they can as homework, it's only an hour long), i suspect my rating would be something like a 2.7. My close friends are like, 'nonono, you're over a 4 for sure", but see, that's cuz they like me, and they don't see all the interactions I have on a daily basis when I'm getting slammed with 1 ratings cuz the two women sitting behind me at sbux today think I'm hitting on the barista on break, while her and I, and her colleagues are all laughing together. (i was hitting on her, btw).

So I thought it might be fun for people to guess what their rating might be. There's a boardgame based on Nosedive that you can even buy (I got one for my friend's son who is a huge black mirror fan), which I don't think i'd ever want to play cuz it seems like a friendship-destroying game (there are many of these, THANKS BATTLESTAR GALACTICA).

so yeah, i suspect I'm a 2.7 and the best part of being that is that I'm not invited to any of those big events where the 4.5's and 4.2's get access to. And you know what? I would NEVER want to attend those types of events (and I don't in real life anyway) cuz it's just a big ****.

If you want to find out your rating Barney just move to china, IIRC they watched that black mirror episode and went "holy **** why didn't we think of that, write it down write it down!"

Yeah they’re the most ahead in the world with the facial recognition cameras everywhere and that strikes me as the hardest part to implement

Anyway see what I mean? Sixty would have 1 starred me and he’s part of the world that I assume would be my base for pumping up my rating. Barney would doomed in the Nosedive world

yeah you gotta watch the show. if you aren't digging it, ask me to flag which episodes to watch. I'm about to start season 5 and there's been 4-5 great episodes but that's it. You don't have to watch them all.

Sixty, you hate the show? Did you at least get to watch the good ones or you watched a few bad ones and got sick of the show? This is what happens to most. If you want me to point you to which episodes you should watch, i'd be happy if you wanted to give it a second shot. There are lots of episodes that fall pretty flat so it's a very inconsistent show. But there are some diamonds

like you and your fiancee should totally watch Hang the DJ together, for example.

What are the good ones, according to Barney?

On Xbox Live for the Xbox One; they initially let ratings/reviews from other users determine whether you could play multiplayer at all in a lot of games. The system was so overwhelmingly abused that Microsoft hot a massive amount of flak for giving users that amount of power, most big games stopped using the system for matchmaking (but not all), and people like me stopped paying for online (and thus playing it) entirely.

The entire problem with the system is that nobody gives good ratings almost ever; but tons of salty manchildren and womanchildren (and actual children too to a lesser degree) gave out massive amounts of negative ratings.

Blizzard in a different system let people manually avoid players in Overwatch when it first came out. This system also failed miserably and had to be removed within weeks of the game releasing. The problem essentially was that similar crybabies as in the xbox fiasco avoided anyone they ever lost to; so good players quickly became unable to get into balanced games and the matchmaking algorithm basically imploded.

On metacritic, most AAA games get an absurd number of 10s and 0s on launch day from people who haven’t played the game yet.

I’m using gaming examples; but I could just as easily give lots of other examples from all kinds of sources on the internet.

On a more macro scale just look at our currently elected politicians lol.

Humanity is **** enough at making good decisions via popular vote that I highly doubt anyone would want to live in a system where our day to day lives swung drastically from extreme to extreme based on this idiocy.
