A thread for Theros limited.

I’m thinking this set looks fun for limited. Doesn’t look super bomby, does look synergistic. Excited for this to release

Hello World’s white commons review:

Revieing white commons for fun.
Spoiler

Tentative ranking:

5-Yes,yes,yes!: daylight chimera, dreadful apathy.
4-Happy to pick this hearlyish:captivating unicorn, hero of the pride, karametra blessing.
3-Would expect to run this more often than not:omen of heliod,heliod pilgrim,indomitable will,sunmane pegasus(maybe)
2-Decent filler even in a strong deck:nixborn courser, leonin of the lost pride, revoke existence, rumbling sentry(maybe)
(2, but only with some sinergy)Seems decent in the right shell:sentinel's eyes, pious wayfarer(maybe), glory bearers.
1-most likely not blanks, but a bit eww:triumphant surge.
(1 if you have sinergy)-Sometime they might be decent I guess: transcendent envoy, flicker of fate.
0-message me if you find a deck that wants this:no cards

Note that I'm a terrible drafter, I just climb to platinum each month for the style and stop.

Commons/uncommon that stand out to me (will be adding to this)

Image
This looks very good to me. 2/3 for 2 is a stat line you’ll put in your deck every time. And it offers excellent late game value with its activated ability, that should require minimal build around effort.

Image
Affectionate Indrik by any other name is still a card I’m happy to pick up

Image
Similar to above. Requires some gamestate conditions to kill 3+ toughness creatures, but more ETB upside than above tho on a worse body.

Image
Thinking this is maindeckable removal this set. Enchantment heavy set, enchantment creatures to kill, escape cards to exile.

Image
Similar to above, think this effect has more value in Theros than in other sets.

Image
This maybe best white common. Should be pretty easy to play T4, and occasionally play T3 if in mono white. Cost reduction could allow you to double spell in the mid game for excellent board development turn.

Image
I don’t think think this will be particularly good, and maybe not even really playable. But I love the flavor, and am attracted to it as a quasi Fling in the right deck.

Image
This strikes me as great value. Not merely fetching 2 cards from the yard, but putting them straight on the board. Value drops notably if not running some number of auras tho.

Image
I like this one. 4/4 for 4 is fine playable, but doubles as a top end play 7/7 for 7 after it’s traded off. Neither is super exciting on its own, but together it seems fairly strong.

Image
So what you’re saying is, I get a pseudo Grapple with the Past and a 2/3 body for 4 mana? Seems good.

Image
This might be best green common. 4/1 for 3 trades up defensively, and the escape cost isn’t super demanding. Easy to image this escaping twice in a game and netting you a 3 for 1 off trades - so you won’t feel as bad trading down offensively. Also quickly turns on RG 4-power-matters cards. Very nice.

Image
I like this one. Restricting to cast as you need to be smart and not walk into instant speed removal or bounce, but makes up for it in triggering constellation and pseudo heroic effects - along with leaving behind a small creature buff. Combo with Flicker of Fate or (drool) shimmerwing Chimera, or recursive effects like Archon of Falling Stars or Lagonna-Band Storyteller for repeat value and the downside of cast timing becomes quite acceptable.

Image
Yes plz

Image
This is unplayable in most decks as a 1/1 token that can’t block is pretty garbage. But it stands out to me as a potentially valuable utility creature in 2 decks. I think if RB sacrifice is viable this set, they’d be happy to have sac fodder with low tax escape cost. Idk if that deck will be any good, but if it comes together, this be a useful meat and potatoes part of it. The other is RW heroic aggro, as this helps go wide and the ability to block is less relevant. Only highlighting it because it’s easy to overlook being bad if you’re not BR sac/RW aggro - but I think it could have a happy home in those.

Image
I was a pretty big fan of Faerie Duelist, and this look similarly good. Little lower floor on the ETB, but little better body and much higher ceiling on ETB in return. Trade up in rarity hurts tho - competing with a different level of cards and prob won’t see this mid-late in packs like you could with Duelist.

More to follow

Curious to see how Boros aggro will come together in draft. I can see a fast go wide deck with the :w: and :r: cards that make token weenies and ones that buff all your doods +1/0 when they’re targeted by a spell. Just don’t know how easy it will be to build that deck. How easy it comes together will make a difference on how good some of the bomby slow spells are. Even non-bomby slow spells/effects. Like this card:

Image

Goes from a potential late game value engine (with enchantment recursion effects offering multiple activations) to unplayable garbage depending on the speed of Theros limited.

Voracious typhon is gas pretty good value for green. Black green could be a fun archetype.

I hope there won't be such a big difference between Arena draft and non-Arena draft this time around. People really praised ELD while on Arena the bots turned it into a 1-deck show when I played ;(

I suspect it’s unavoidable with current technology in Arena. Bots have programmed preferences and only adjust through updates. People adjust in real time - you see a strong build emerge and the next draft you adjust your evaluations. If bots were programmed with a low value on a particular card in Arena and that card ends up being better than anticipated (and there’s always some gap between anticipated and realized values), players can and will exploit that until WotC runs an update.

Depending on how much time I have to write up rankings, I might do some for the commons.

First off: White

Best: Dreadful Apathy
Strong contender for best common period due to various positive synergies.

Very good: Daybreak Chimera
Even if you can discount it by just 1 that's a good rate for a 3-power flier.

Very good, but get worse in multiples (3+): Heliod's Pilgrim, Triumphant Surge, Indomitable Will
Pilgrim is great for fetching the multitude of strong Auras in this set (Dreadful Apathy, Mire's Grasp or Iroas's Blessing, to name a few) and makes a fine body to aura up itself; you do need a few Auras in the first place though. Triumphant Surge is removal whose conditions are met by most of the dangerous creatures anyway (and if not, one can make it so). Indomitable Will is basically a permanent combat trick that benefits from being an Aura.

Solid playables and good fillers: Nyxborn Courser, Sentinel's Eyes, Karametra's Blessing, Omen of the Sun, Glory Bearers, Revoke Existence
Courser has a great statline, plus being an enchantment can be useful. Sentinel's Eyes is a recurrable Aura with all of the merits and demerits to it. Blessing is a very flexible 1-mana combat trick. Omen is more of a utility card than a powerhouse, but it should provide enough of that to prove useful. Glory Bearers are a tad expensive at 4 mana, but they do trigger Constellation and the +0/+1 to other attacking creatures might prove useful. Revoke Existence should find enough targets to be okay to maindeck.

Fillers: Hero of the Pride, Leonin of the Lost Pride, Sunmane Pegasus, Captivating Unicorn
The Pride-mates are a couple of solid yet unexciting 2-drops with marginal upside. Pegasus has a fine statline and can race if need (and mana) be, but is a little slow. Unicorn makes a fine top-end card for aggressive decks with enough Auras.

Situational cards and mediocre fillers: Transcendent Envoy, Flicker of Fate, Phalanx Tactics, Rumbling Sentry, Pious Wayfarer
Envoy is good in one deck and one deck only, and that is an aggressive Auras deck that can jam multiple Auras onto it quickly.
Flicker of Fate has some really nice combos to go with it, but probably shouldn't be played unless there's synergies with it.
Phalanx Tactics is a mostly go-wide pump effect in a mostly go-tall format. Sentry is a purely defensive 5-drop in a set that leans aggressive. Wayfarer doesn't do enough with his Constellation trigger to be an effective card.

Watching early access streams with focus on drafts and immediate thing that stands out is Return to Nature. Bouncing around streams to get small looks at different decks and RtN isn’t just a solid C grade playable mainboard like I thought - it’s like high B grade :takei:

And I’m seeing them in basically every deck running green - whacking demigods, escape spells, removing enchantment creature chump blockers for lethal swing, blowing up auras as a pseudo combat trick... seeing that card do the lord’s work today

Escape looks like a blast. I was worried format might be too fast to see it used much, but games I’m seeing today are slow enough people are getting multiple escapes with cards that tax 3 from the yard.

U doesn’t seem nearly as strong from a pure power level perspective as it has in recent sets, but I really like it’s twist this set. Easy to play at instant speed, which has the 2/3 nymph that gives cost reduction to spells cast on opps turn looking even better than I thought, and counterspells better than normal. Haven’t seen anyone playing UR yet, but saw a bit of UB that looked fun.

Another note at the moment is the hydra aura is strong AF if not answered. As with earlier observation it’s high risk, but reward is game winning if opp can’t pull hard removal or enchantment hate. Def a risk I’d take if I’m in the color.

Do you guys have a good resource for all the draftable rares and mythics?

Or just a list with those that aren't? Always a pain to create this for my draft xls from multiple sources.

Try LSV's set reviews, they aren't complete yet though.

Right now trying to figure out how to build my first Sealed pool (https://imgur.com/a/bH9wwi9). I feel like I'm probably playing White because the pegasus is such a bomb, and Black because it's so deep, but opening Klothys as well as what looks like a good RG gold card is very tempting. Maybe GW splash R?

I want a list to copy-paste into Excel ;)

So far the best source has been magicarenacardlist.com but they don't have a filter for promo etc cards.

Thanks guys. Someone has been so kind to repost the original xls-file on reddit:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wRtIwg ... yB1kR/view

Use it, it's great. Though there is no point in tracking uncommons imo.

First time drafting Theros, seeking advice on how to build this from those with more experience:

Image

I'm a bit paranoid I'm short on win cons, and I passed a couple of the blue flash hexproof aura as well which might've been a mistake (although when I passed the first I only had one Commanding Presence).

I’d cut 1 sentinels eyes, 1 lost pride lion, and the naiad. Only have 3 spells you can play at instant speed so naiad doesn’t shine here (could consider sideboarding in with counterspells along with lion fish and maybe turtle for matchups where you want to slow down and play more controlling game - think you might need to transform against aggressive decks, main deck should handle tall decks, but controlling builds will prob crush you by removing your limited # of win cons). Lion is acceptable filler but I wouldn’t run 3 unless desperate for 2 drops or need the death trigger tech for specific matchup. One sentinels eye can escape for a 2nd (or 3rd or 4th or) copy - don’t need 2 here imo.

Kraken is helluva bomb if opp doesn’t answer quickly. Commanding presence on one of your fliers is pretty decent secondary win con. Nice you have a couple ways to fetch one, and the potential to drop one on envoy T3. Be careful about deciding when to cast that - peeps have gotten wise to the more powerful auras and will blow you out if you let them.

I like that you have 4 removal enchantments you can fetch up with 2 pilgrims. Lyre is powerful and can help insure your fliers hit. You’re def crowded in the 3 spot, but many of those are removal likely played off curve so maybe not as painful as it looks on cursory glance.

I’m very interested in hearing your results. UW is fairly rare in my exposure to this format, prob cause overall I’d say they’re the weakest colors in this format (personally rate G>B>R>W>U).

First THB ranked draft here. Currently 3-2 (started 0-2), picked up a solid 5 rares for the ol' collection though!

Pretty casual approach to this first one, haven't done a lot of research yet. Setessan Training seems pretty awful for the GB deck (though probably good for GW and GU, and ok for GR?). After reading Escape being a big factor in limited (despite not really seeing it be especially relevant in my Sealed experience), Loathsome Chimeras and Underworld Charger have been awesome here. Skola Grovedancer is pretty medium overall, but it's been nice lategame to bin a couple cards at Opp's EoT and rebuy an Escape on my turn.

Unknown Shores is generally pretty underwhelming, should I be using it here though? Ichthyomorphosis has been an underwhelming splash and I'll probably swap it (and maybe Setessan Training) out for the other Grim Physician and/or Nyxborn Marauder.
