I'm back in town. I have gotten a couple of PMs so far regarding possible facts about our emerging Dwarf, but I don't think I'll have the energy to post them until tomorrow (which means there's still time to send me some if you have not already done so!)

Alright! So, I have a total of 17 "facts" about out emerging dwarven planeswalker. I will post them all here. I suggest we proceed by talking about them, maybe one or two at a time, and try to determine if we think they should be "true" or "false." These are presented in a random order, and we may by all means discuss them in a random order. Pick any one you want, and let's talk about it!

Quote:
He has a tendency to hum amelodically while working. It almost got him kicked out of school.

Quote:
He's a slow mage. Most of the magic he knows takes ages for him to cast and is largely useful in his work rather than battle. Most of his skills in combat come from a wide assortment of spellbombs.

Quote:
He has an embarrassing nickname everyone in his family is way too fond of.

Quote:
He has developed a game of strategy played with marbles that he has never lost.

Quote:
He can identify many components by smell or taste, and a few of them he just likes to keep in his mouth. He consider the flavor of most cuisines bland. The two facts are probably related.

Quote:
He carries what look worryingly like living creatures suspended in jars. The "creatures" are actually frozen in time.

Quote:
He dislikes sunlight, even more than other dwarves.

Quote:
He has experimented with blood in secret, discovering a few powerful formulas with disgusting side effects.

Quote:
He served the required 2 years in the Dwarvenguard, which taught him basic hand to hand fighting, but he spent most of his time guarding a customs office and saw little to no combat.

Quote:
He loves lemons. They are not native to his plane as far as he knows, but encountered them on one of his earliest planeswalks and thinks they are the greatest things in the multiverse.

Quote:
Birds unnerve him.

Quote:
He has no immediate family, but has 20-30 distant cousins and near as many other assorted relations. That branch of his clan has a very widespread reputation, one which he consequently doesn't really share in, but is nevertheless associated with. With no immediate family, he mostly only makes appearances at clan gatherings a few times a year where he'll be regaled by his peers of their accomplishments and nagged by his aunts and matriarchs when he'll add another wee one to the clan.

Quote:
He kept a small pet drake for a few months, but his housekeeper took it off his hands because he kept forgetting to feed it.

Quote:
He has briefly met at least one of the canon M:EM characters. The interaction was congenial, but he does not care for this person.

Quote:
While he appreciates its cross-planar value, he doesn't like gold, especially as an ornament. He finds it tacky.

Quote:
He despises boats and most everything associated with sailing.

Quote:
Somewhere, he tricked a dragon with fake precious metals and gems. He still has to return to that plane from time to time.

Quote:
He owes another Planeswalker some kind of debt (money or service), and he really doesn't like it. He's never been able to find that Planeswalker again to settle.

Yes! It's a good way to have action scenes play a bit like a puzzle, especially if the reader knows how many bombs he has per type. As a crafter type, his need for preparation to face fast-paced scenes is good. I approve whole-heartedly.

I like the premise, though I would also like to add that maybe he doesn't make the physical spellbombs himself. I think he would make the alchemical components within, but I imagine he must outsource the construction of the bomb itself to somebody else. I assume he has a regular supplier, probably another dwarf on his home plane.

Dang it, I forgot about this. I wanted to send something in. Could I still post an idea?

About the spellbombs: I like the idea of needing someone else to help make them, but I would just have the partner be the smith who makes the casings, and the alchemist could probably do the rest. I feel like that could give us more story opportunities.

I think you should. If secrecy is supposed to be an issue, the first time I read the list I failed to recognize my own suggestions until halfway in, and giving it a glance now I forgot some of the posted ideas existed, so no issue on my end :D

I concur: him having limited shells and being forced to choose how to address a future issue can be another cool moment.

I see no reason why not. The main point of having people send it to me first was so that people didn't know who said what, just so that we could come to the conversation as neutrally as possible. But I see no reason not to add some more if people want to. This is, after all, a community build. I would much rather have your input than not. :)

My only idea was this:

He owes another Planeswalker some kind of debt (money or service), and he really doesn't like it. He's never been able to find that Planeswalker again to settle.

My first thought when reading this: It was probably Pax.

I like this idea. I sort of see him groaning every time his bell rings, half-expecting it to be this planeswalker finally calling in the favor, but it isn't. And while he doesn't really want to see the person, he's more annoyed that he still can't settle up.

I don't remember much about Pax... she(?) has never appeared directly "on screen" and ended up crunched in some Chassmaster's plan, right? Wasn't she mentioned by Aerik and Antony?

Regardless, I like the idea.

It would be hilarious if it were somehow Fisco. He's normally very good about managing his business affairs, though.

Except he did have something keeping him from calling favors in lately...

Right quick, just want to float this idea, but how does everyone feel about the name Cid?

Quote:

Kinda feeling false on this one. Just get the impression he's almost blind focused while he's working, so the humming just feels weird.

Quote:

Riffing on what's already been said, he's probably an expert artifact user, but can't craft for ****. So I'm totally on board for the idea he has to buy the shells for the bombs.
And the construction of a spell bomb would make an interesting little essay unto itself.

I get the feeling these two things are relevant to one another.

Again, these feel likely relevant.
And it just amuses me to think of a dwarf obsessed with lemons.
And lemonade? Blows his mind.

In favor

As an alchemist, it'd be funny if turning lead into gold was an almost beginner level task, which means gold is virtually worthless as anything other than a catalyst. Especially if the amount of gold you get out of lead were hilariously impractical.

Well, more that his sense of taste is shot, so only something as potent as a lemon makes any impact.

Combustible lemons that will BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN!

I kind of like this. Of course, Gold is hugely important to alchemy so I imagine that transmuted gold might be consumed in bulk as reagent or catalyst for higher-order reactions, but that would still leave it on the level of "Useful, but common" when you can turn lead into it. Kinda like we're familiar with Tin or Copper.

The disgust with birds also strikes me. Makes me remember what the propose of canaries is for miners. "The only reason we keep those feathery gits is so they can die first!"

I had a dumb idea that I kind of love, but going off the idea of spell bombs, what if some of the shells he buys were also gnomes?
Gnome bombs!

Like ticking gnome or bottle gnomes.

I'm agin' it. :D

I feel it conjures up too many unwanted Final Fantasy connotations.

Gnome bombs!

This one I like. Part of it is my sentimental, nostalgic attachment to Bottle Gnomes, which ALSO fits with this guy's alchemist aesthetic, but I also think it would be a cool little calling card for him.

I do not suggest we go with this idea, but there's a part of me that wants him to hate the gnome casings, but whoever makes it for him won't give him anything else. "For what you pay, you get gnomes. Add a '1' and two zeros in front of your fee and we'll talk about a new shape."

I concur. Apart from that, I agree with most of Barinellos' observations and votes.

Ooo, I'd read the hell out of that!

Though his fave kind of lemonade has so little water in it that he's about the only one that can drink it.

Hmm... maybe that drake could move on four limbs using the claws on its wings, and didn't move its head in a bird-like way? There are ways to differentiate the two.

I like the general thrust that his dedication to his work tends to eclipse many things, like the ability to look after other creatures. He's deffo the kind of person that you could trust with any kind of unstable material or item, but he somehow manages to regularly kill his succulents despite his best efforts.

Ooh, he's brought lemon seeds and/or saplings to his home plane, and he's convinced they simply cannot grow there, but really he just doesn't care for them properly.
