i got Terra Mystica brand new and never played it once. The rules book was really intimidating. I read the whole thing and understood nothing.

Catan is awesome but far from perfect.

The one that always stayed fun for me was Puerto Rico. Loved that game.

I'm often the guy learning and explaining the rules in my group. The guys toss me the names of the games they have bought and I go to youtube to find a video like this: Terra Mystica.

Maybe those videos don't cover everything, but you can fill holes by checking the actual rules book later. I don't think an MtG player has any right to be intimidated by a board game's complexity ;)

I will bring up Puerto Rico with these guys, one of them probably has it.

@Cucho:
For your 7yo Catan is a safe choice imo, all the other games are for grown-ups - and some of them stupidly expensive. Catan is a totally valid game for that age, maybe even a bit much.

Also when factoring in kids, RNG can actually be a positive thing - because it spreads wins more evenly over differently capable people.

Another game that comes to my mind for the purpose of playing with a kid is Wingspan. That's a recent game about birds - quite interesting actually, because it has many species with accurate descriptions as cards. I've played it twice and it is certainly more of a family game than an actual competitive one for adults. But since you're looking for just that, I can recommend it. Check out a few minutes of the video.

I think Catan it is, thanks guys!

that stupid show is the opposite of funny.

It's weird that Sheldon takes a card immediately after rolling the dice. Typically it takes a bit of time for everyone to see what the die roll is and then people need to see where their settlements and cities are built to see which resources they produced. It usually takes a few seconds.

plus, it's weird how they set up their game.

I HATE THAT SHOW

Poor Barney. There, there.

It was very good for multiple seasons. Became worse over time though, everyone getting "normalized". I pulled that clip from memory - not much to watch these days in the sitcom sector.

That’s true, there’s never been another Seinfeld or anything that came close. I can’t take sitcoms anymore. Even The Office, which is excellent, got old for me after two
Seasons

“There, there” lol, nice. That joke alone is better than the entire library of Sheldons show

Talking about tabletop games....

Recently got Photosynthisis for the fam. It's a game about planting and growing trees. The sun rotates around the hex-shaped board to change the angle of light. You can block your opponents trees from the sun with your larger trees.

Then you sacrifice your trees for points. Then you build more.

Lots of fun.

I also recently got another deck of Lunch Money. It's a card game where you're in a big schoolyard brawl trying to KO everyone else and steal their lunch money. You get to throw Hail Mary's, Big Combos and Knife people while they Block, Dodge or Humiliate you back. 4-player is best because it creates a small social game-within-a-game where nobody wants to be everyone's target but you cant just sit back and defend all game, you have to attack someone.

**** this game

It's become such a snowball fest. Cards like Risen Reef, Mayhem Devil, Nightpack Ambusher, Nissa, Who Shakes the World - if you can't stop them, you literally lose. Worse you pretty much have only ONE turn to stop them before the advantage they generate go beyond all possibility of recovery.

So dumb. Limited actually has some fun gameplay, but constructed is just both sides asking the other "do you have an answer?" until one person says "no" and loses.

I hate the coin flip!

Can't imagine pining for the old Gwent coin flip, but it sure feels like I have more scope to outplay my opponent even when going first in Gwent, than I do if I'm on the draw in the Fires mirror where opponent plays T4 Fires and autowins, or in the control mirror where opponent plays T3 Teferi before I can Absorb it, etc. Don't mention monored too. And last I saw, Gwent coin flip is actually balanced now ...

RIP me.
