Eleven months and 48 poems down. I only have four more poems that need writing for my New Year's resolution, so if anyone has any requests, now would be a good time to make them. No promises, especially if they are troll suggestions (literal or otherwise), but there's always a chance it might get written.

Here's a bunch so you can pick and choose. I've not read all of your card-based poems, so forgive me if I give you a prompt that you've already done.
Banefire
Obliterate
Kiku's Shadow
Glimpse the Unthinkable
Spirit of the Labyrinth
Ethersworn Canonist
Darksteel Myr

Thanks, Huey! Here's the result:

*A quick writer's note: "Korinth," is not pronounced like the Greek city Corinth. Rather, the accent is on the second syllable.

The Ballad of Korinth Dane

Very nice! An interesting twist to my intended prompt. I strongly disagree with Korinth, but that must be obvious to anyone that knows about my fondness for artifice, and beside that it's intriguing to guess about his motivations as he deliberately chose to learn metalworking and how his outlook changed until his Ascension. I see what you did there with his name, and I liked how you wove each card in the narrative, though now I fear Korinth will enter the ungodly large roster of your characters :D

Thanks for sharing! Do you want another list of cards as a prompt, or would you prefer some more variation?

Very nice! An interesting twist to my intended prompt.

Thanks! Yeah, after I decided to try to incorporate all seven cards into one poem, I knew I would need to take some liberties with a couple of the cards. For instance, the Canonist is not from Esper, and the Myr isn't from Mirrodin. But I had a lot of fun putting together the overarching story based on these cards as plot markers.

I strongly disagree with Korinth, but that must be obvious to anyone that knows about my fondness for artifice, and beside that it's intriguing to guess about his motivations as he deliberately chose to learn metalworking and how his outlook changed until his Ascension.

Yeah, I think Korinth's moral descent, if you want to call it that, began with his social exclusion (as a result of being completely non-metal), but at first, he was dedicated to working his way up. He soon realized that doing so would be impossible, and when he is sent into the Labyrinth, he first assumes it is a trial to prove his worth, but then realizes that he was meant to die there. This starts the whole thing he has with hating all things metal, that and seeing the apparently depressed metal man.

I definitely don't see Korinth as a good person. I think he started that way, in all likelihood, but the fact that he would try (and presumably succeed) in killing an entire world for the sins of a few puts him pretty far beyond redemption. I also presume that Korinth is an oldwalker, just based on the ludicrous amount of mana he seems to wield. Who knows what he's up to now?

I see what you did there with his name, and I liked how you wove each card in the narrative, though now I fear Korinth will enter the ungodly large roster of your characters :D

Ungodly? I have three gods on my roster! Okay, fine, so Syl and Chardis aren't really treated as gods anymore, and Kahr is more of a god-king, but still... :)

Anyway, I did approach this as an original story of a possible M:EM 'walker. I have absolutely no plans for now for Korinth Dane, but I wouldn't mind bringing him in at some point. Maybe he and Jack can, at some point in the past, have one hell of a war.

Thanks for sharing! Do you want another list of cards as a prompt, or would you prefer some more variation?

If you have anything you want to see, by all means, make a request. But it's mostly for the readers. I have no problem coming up with ideas for my poems, but with so few left, I just wanted to remind people that I do, in fact, take requests. :)

They do look like natural rivals, both for their powers and objectives...

I'll keep that in mind! I liked Korinth's tale a lot, so I could come at you with another bunch of cards in the future :D

Thanks! I designed this form myself. There are only five rhymes in the entire poem, each appearing six times, and each occupying one of three positions (the first internal rhyme of a stanza, the second internal rhyme of the stanza, or the end rhymes for the second and fourth lines of a stanza) once. The pattern is:

...A...A
...B
...C...C
...B

...D...D
...A
...E...E
...A

...B...B
...C
...D...D
...C

...E...E
...D
...B...B
...D

...C...C
...E
...A...A
...E

Or, to make it nice and colorful:

Angel

I invented the form a few months ago as a thought exercise, but I never actually wrote anything for it. Then I remembered it this morning and thought I'd see how it goes.

I encourage others to give it a shot! It's a lot of fun (if your idea of fun is writing highly formulaic poetry, that is!)

"Retribution" makes 52 poems for the year, thus successfully completing my New Year's Resolution for 2019. Thanks to everyone who has been reading, particularly Huey Nomure and Pavor Nocturnus, who commented from time to time and offered some suggestions/requests. It is much appreciated.

I may post poems from time to time going forward, but I will not be trying to match my 2019 output next year. It takes a fair amount of effort and time to write a poem, and the response to them, while appreciated, has been limited, so I'll be directing my efforts elsewhere for the coming year.

Meanwhile, if anyone has an MTG or M:EM themed poem they want to post, feel free to put it here if you want, or of course, you can always make your own thread, as well.

Thanks, everybody.

Aaawww, thanks! I certainly didn't comment nearly as much as you'd have deserved. "Retribution" is really cool, and it's great you tackled my suggestion for Magus of the Disk. I went right back to re-read the original one about the disk before jumping into the new one. :D

Hell yeah, most people wouldn't be able to sustain that for even one year, let alone two in a row. It's more than impressive as it is. :hattip:

I thought doing Magus of the Disk as the last one was a nice way to bring this full-circle. So I've been saving that particular request/suggestion for the end since you mentioned it. So thank you! I'm glad you liked it.

Thank you. It was fun, and I'm pretty happy with most of what I produced this last year.

Legitimately, I am constantly impressed that you can craft poetry, particularly in the volume you do.
Poetry is just something I don't have the knack for, but you do it so well.

This one has nothing to do with Magic, but I like it, so I thought I'd share.

Just because I felt like it, I went to Gatherer and hit the Random Card button, and wrote a poem about it. Here is a Raikervennian Sonnet about Grave Endeavor.
