I bought... too many gems when Arena went open beta. At the time a full collection would cost a couple thousand due to mythics. Im not sure how the changes to duplicate handling effect this; but it still probably would exceed 1000. You only get 1 rare or mythic per pack; so some sets best case would still need a couple hundred packs per set.

On a set like RNA with: 111 commons, 80 uncommons, 53 rares and 15 mythics. You would need: 213 packs if you're ok with having all collection 4x except for mythic rares, of which by that time you'd have gotten 26 out of 60 with packs and 12 more if you use the wildcards obtained.

So if 100US buys you 99 packs... then you need just a little more than 200US per set... current standard has 8 full sets so "full" collection ATM would cost roughly 1,7K Us.
by the end of the month full standard collection would be around 1,1K Us.

Reddit Post

EDIT: I'm around 350Us since closed beta and I think I have nearly full collection for Standard purposes.
Doing your quest and drafting from time to time gets you a long way

I should have mentioned earlier: op is absolutely correct that it’s a terrible idea for WotC to add hand-picked powerful cards to Historic. There are a ton of cards, from mtg’s history, that are only reasonable because years of hate have been printed against them. Absent the hate cards, many of those cards would be completely oppressive - format defining - in ever single deck. That would make the meta extremely lopsided and not particularly fun.

Also, probably overly expensive.

Yeah that's just for whales and if they persue this idea Historic will become Whaleland, I mean they did a fairly good job balancing standard for the last sets, so it would be silly to add cards of that power level, break the format and give whales an edge in the process... But yeah that's is what they are trying to push... The cherry on this is the argument...
-We are doing this for the newer and F2P
2 players coz.. reasons...

They should just keep things simple 1WC redeems any card on the pool of the WC rarity, if you wanna bring busted cards... Sure but make them accessible to everyone, so the meta breaks for everyone...

Can you imagine this guy's banning those cards :V

It would be such a shame to kill this format with ridiculous inclusions - monetary aspects of 8 mythic wc per card aside.

I'm glad attention has shifted towards this topic instead of the obvious 2:1 thing that might've been a PR stunt to hide the rest. There's also a video by that Professor highlighting how Wurmcoil Engin trashes every other 6 drop - and goes into any deck b/c colorless.

Whales always have an edge in any format where whales exist. Be it MTGA standard/historic, Orca, Star Trek IV, Moby Dick, Stargate Atlantis, Finding Nemo or Free Willy. Whales go big or go home. The only notable exception is Wales in GB. Sorry welsh people.

More seriously: If 1000 people play historic and 10 of those are serious whales, they will have an edge. You should only meet them 1/100 games though.

There's always a bigger fish.

Welp it seems that Wotc was correct to wait to make this announcement until just before spouler season. Seems like between that and the brawl announcement people are very excited for the next set.

True, but fwiw the anger (about the announcement) won't ever really matter that much, the issue will come when/if the historic META is unplayable or extremely unfun. Right now it's just people making assumptions, eventually, those assumptions will either be, or not be supported by reality.

This is less funny when you've already responded to the thread twice before.

Sixty got angry at me? Annoyed? Certainly. Angry? That's not at the level of angry.

-------------------

The mods don't need to get involved anymore because:

A) No one is purposely trolling anyone anymore. There hasn't been any 70 card deck 18 land spam in recent memory for example.

B) Everyone still posting here acts more mature than they used to.

C) There's simply not enough talked about to get into a heated enough discussion for a 30 page "debate" on the finer details of cards like Exploration.

I think Wizards has to walk a fine line between making the format attractive but not too attractive. Basically the same line they've been walking all along with appealing to older, more established fan base versus bringing in new players. Obviously right now the priority goes to latter since MTG is enjoying something of a renaissance. Crippling that momentum by bifurcating the player base and play modes would be suicidal. If indeed MTG:A is the future of Magic then Historic is positioned to be the Vintage or Modern of the format. But I think that Wizards themselves don't know whether or not this will be the case, hence the naming of the format ("Historic" makes it seem like a format that no longer enjoys viability, but is just a historical curiosity). They're probably leaving their options open as things pan out with the rotation.

I think Standard is in an interesting place and TOE will only enrich an already-diverse and interesting meta. That being said, the same is arguably true of post-rotation standard. Obv. some decks will lose some cards, but that just opens a space for developing the decks in different directions. Which kinda gets to the problem here - Standard and historic are not differentiated enough yet to each have their own identities. I guess we will see how things unfold. I'm sure WoTC is watching things closely, ready to make adjustments as necessary.

I object to point B

I agree that Standard is in a great place - my favorite Arena meta so far - and that it's been in a good place in all 4 "seasons" (official wording?) since GRN. Before that however, the meta was garbage. I know why I had abandoned the previous Duels when Kaladesh was announced. Thopters had already made me sick and then we were headed for Thopter-land :gross:
Anyway, now while the design team did a great job for a year, there is a chance, Standard might come into a bad position again. And then I'd be glad for having a viable Historic format.

I just read an article by Saffron Olive on that btw:
https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/do ... agic-arena

He emphasizes the aspect of Standard having good and bad times which he certainly knows better than I.
