I personally think that Bastion is probably fine as your original version. It's like, sure, really good at casting bant+ cards, but it's really bad at casting rakdos cards, and if you fill your deck with cards like that you become overly reliant on them and probably do nothing the first two turns, and if you want to cast several spells at once it can quickly become quite awkward.

I think the best part of this card is being able to have mana up for counterspells and then still cast a sorcery-speed thing with that mana if you don't use it. It also gives pseudo-vigilance.

-1/-1 counters are most interesting when they stick around on the battlefield, rather than instantly killing things. What I like about diminish is that it inherently leads to this type of gameplay. Here I imagine it in a set where New Phyrexia is invading some plane. It would be primary in black and red, and secondary in white. It's a bend in white, for sure, but the fact that it goes after the biggest thing does make it feel more white, in a Topple/Smite the Monstrous kind of way.
