I didn't play during Ixalan, but after a quick search I have to say damn are those lands crazy powerful looking. Were the transform triggers tough to pull off?

Constantly moving to avoid detection, you had to know someone to find it.

I only drafted Ixalan a few times, but it depended. Some of them came on line late enough that the bonus was mediated, like the green Gaea's Cradle one rarely helped you ramp that much. That said, Search for Azcanta is a Standard staple.

Several of the double-faced lands in Ixalan see standard play. Legion's Landing is a staple in mono-white aggro, Search for Azcanta is great in any blue control deck, and Treasure Map has seen play in a variety of decks. In more casual formats, I think I've seen every single one of the double-faced lands played at some point.

So I want to make Shandalar cards, but I have to admit, I have no idea what plane that is. Gatherer doesn't have a Shandalar xpac listed and a google search only comes up with a video game from 1997?

It's an old plane that was featured in a video game and reused much later as a setting for some generic core set cards. It's also where the Chain Veil is from. When in doubt, reference a name in that article, make a sliver, or just design for a generic fantasy trope.
