1) I honestly don't get why so many people here want "badly written charachters" killed off for that. The damage have already been done, and the best way to dampen it is to put those charachters into new and unusual situations and developments that would make them interesting. Making charachters die for meta-reasons, especially by contrivance, will in fact make the story even worse.

2) I can very much get the will to keep the "well-written charachters" alive. But, again, keeping all the good charachters alive by contrivance is damaging to the story.

3) Concerning Animatou. IMHO, "Reality-warper child" isn't at all a boring charachter archetype, if handled well...
...
I do not trust WotC to handle Animatou well.
I would really like to call out Barenellios on his "She's a bad charachter because she's a child and they won't give her apprropriate challenges".
I mean, nothing says that fate can't give a child appropriate challenges... Nevermind, you know, HER choosing to engage into huge challenges herself.
But that's Wizards/Hasbro we are talking about.
Those people might actually be afraid to do that.

Eh, I'd give Liliana fair odds of learning the meaning of self-sacrifice and burning her self out under the crush of Bolas' control in order to help turn the tide. It wouldn't be a surprising end to her narrative arc. It would leave some unresolved threads here and there, what with the Raven Man, the Chain Veil, Garruk's Curse, etc. still mostly unresolved. However, WotC might need to notch a well liked main character to really sell the cost of the war, and we have new replacements on hand for both Gideon and Liliana.

I'm willing to wait and see who loses the coin flip.

As long as Bolas doesn't die I don't care much what else happens

I mean, they gave Gideon a sword that specifically has the power to kill elder dragons so.....Bolas or Ugin are probably getting poked.

I do wonder if Burning Prophet has meaning to how its going to go down;

"This day will end in death, but not the one you hoped for."

So my guess here is that Bolas will not be the one dying? Seems to me like someone is sacrificing themselves to may be lock him away in something? In the eternal sun may be? Gideon, Liliana or may be Ugin?

"This day will end in victory, but not the one you expected."

This could mean anything really. So Bolas loses but not how we expect it? Someone unexpected shows up?

I kinda half think Burning Prophet might be a precursor to Teyo's ascension since the visual style on her is very odd.

I guess even if he dies it's ok since he never really dies. Which itself is kinda lame maybe?

Any theories on The Wanderer? I hope she's an Umezawa in disguise. I saw some speculation that she is Elspeth, but Elspeth's never had beef with Bolas that I'm aware of.

I'm ready to die on the "It's not Elspeth!" hill.

The Wanderer fills the "wandering swordsmaster" trope you see across a lot of Asian-themed fiction.

Spoiler

All we really know about The Wanderer so far is that she's a she, she has a sword that makes cool air slashes, and MaRo refuses to be anything but coy when people ask him about her identity.

I’ve also read that it could be some sort of an Avatar of Emrakul. It’s from the story “the hand that moves” where Emrakul appeared to Nissa in the trail of Knowledge.

https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/magic-story/hand-moves-2017-04-26

Quote:
She saw a young man, his face erased, stumbling among a garden of statues. High above the man a growing cloud of dusk attacked the sun. From somewhere outside the garden there was a mighty roar.

Shift.

Nissa saw a world, then tens of worlds, hundreds of worlds. Thousands. She saw this world, the world of Amonkhet, and wrapped around it was a dark sinewy line. That line stretched back through all the worlds, all the thousands of worlds, and she saw an unbroken line of darkness from Amonkhet all the way back to the beginning of the line.

Shift.

A large golden disc, shaped and stylized like a sun, descending from the sky. The sun disc approached a large circular stone tablet covered with strange sigils, and the two discs merged, becoming a single golden disc. Cracks appeared in the golden disc, small at first, then widening, growing. The disc crumbled away into nothingness.

The scenes shifted faster now, barely even an image forming before being replaced. A fizzling torch. A broken clock with a clean face. A mummified head facing backward atop a mummified body. A split tree, its sap oozing into the ground. A shattered shield, its shiny metallic pieces torn and scattered.

She closed her eyes against the onslaught, but still the images came tumbling through her head, crumpling her in mid-air. A falling dragon. Giants, covered in metallic blue, stomping through streets. A massive flash of light, consuming a world.

An angel descending from the sky.

Nissa opened her eyes, and the angel continued to descend. It was the angel from her nightmare. The angel that reminded her of Emrakul.

The angel's eyes were open, but unlike the dream, there were no snakes, just blank white orbs. She landed in front of Nissa.

"Why do you dally? I showed you the ways of power. Use them." The angel's voice melodious, a cool breeze. Beautiful. And beautiful the way Amonkhet was beautiful, all horror underneath.

There is some foreshadowing on those scenes. Makes me wonder if the wanderer is some kind of angel, she looks a lot like Avacyn but she was unmade by Sorin though. The falling dragon could be Bolas or may be Niv-Mizzet

Cross Sorin/Nahiri off the list of 'Walkers who might die in this war.

Quote:
braveswordwielder asked:
It seems like a bit of a waste to include the Sorin/Nahiri feud in War as little more than a sideshow (especially given that Sorin's escape occurred "off screen" and we still don't have any idea what Nahiri's motivations are outside of Eldrazi/Sorin). Those characters probably could have propped up their own set, and from what was written on the mothership it seems like neither of them have any interest in or effect on the Bolas arc.

markrosewater said:
We wanted Sorin and Nahiri here and they can’t coexist without their feud. There will come a time and place where it can be the focus, just not in the middle of a giant planeswalker war.

Any reason Ugin wouldn't show up on Ravnica? As far as I know, the last time he showed up in the storyline was to yell at Jace back during the Zendikar II storyline.

Ugin will be in War of the Spark, we just haven't seen his card yet.

Is she enjoying her time here in the now prison-world of Ravnica?

I assume the Immortal Sun overrides her innate ability to automatically planeswalk.

Exactly. Maybe that's relaxing for her. (If you ignore the whole war going on.)

Oh, gotcha. Yeah, maybe. It also makes me wonder how she sleeps, or if "has to focus to not planeswalk" is more a generality.

I'd assume usually by waking up on a new plane with no idea how she got there and an Aether Trail too long to retrace.

idiocy
