I take it personal when you suggest I´m not being honest.

Never meant to do that. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

edit: I see, someone liked this post already, but I don't see by whom. To clarify, I seriously don't want to go into a pissing contest with anyone here. I consider this site a nice enclave that isn't as toxic as the "mothership". What I intended was to analyze your win-rate from the info you gave so that rookies like Banedon(sorry :D) and me know what it takes to get there if not to infinity.

Well, this was a disappointment. I’ll seek my entertainment elsewhere gentlemen.

I wonder if it's easier to go 3-1 or better in competitive draft, or 6-3 or better in quick draft?

I only have a sample size of one, but I'm 3-1 in competitive draft right now, while going 6-3 or better in quick draft seems quite hard to do.

In a nutshell: Don't play competitive drafts unless you are better than the average pro tour player. You need multiple good drafts to make up for the one that will inevitably screw you - even if it has to come down to mana issues.

I went 5-1 in my first competitive draft and it felt really good, but then I went 1-2 in the next draft (mana screwed myself out of two matches ...) and found I didn't get any gem rewards at all. That surprised me. Still, I did get five packs worth of cards for 1500 gems, which isn't terrible.

Annoyingly, competitive drafts seem to remain Guilds of Ravnica all the time while quick drafts have more variety. I think I'll continue to play competitive drafts, but will alternate with quick drafts.

That is exactly the reason why competitive draft doesn't pay off for the average player. For 1 win you get 5 Packs and 1/3 of a wildcard for the pack opening. On the other hand, two quick drafts give you at least 8 packs, 1/3 of a wildcard and 100 gems – guaranteed for 0 wins and it gets better from there on. So unless your winrate is extremely high, quick drafts always offer better rewards. Even an average of 2 wins in competitive drafts requires a winrate over 66 % and the rewards for that are not even better than the rewards for the same win percentage in quick drafts.

Are you counting that if a player has, say, 60% chance of winning a game then it has 64.8% chance of winning a match?

Let's take your numbers and say you have a 60 % chance to win a match and a 64 % chance to win twice before you lose twice. That is the least you need to come remotely close to the rewards of quick draft. But the punishment for a failed competitive draft (0 and 1 wins) far outweighs the reward for a successful draft (3+ wins). Therefore my estimation of at least a 66 % winrate to break even – and I think it is very generous.

Yeah I thought it was 500 gems for 1 win, 1000 gems for 2, 1500 gems for 3, which would've smoothed things out. Still, in the 1-2 run I did get 5 packs worth of cards for 1500 gems invested, which is well above the rate when buying from the store, so I'm not complaining. My experience with quick draft is that I average about 4-5 wins, which isn't sustainable in the long run either.

5-1, 1-2 and 3-2 so far. I dunno if I'm "better than the average pro tour player" (if I am, then that's a shocker, because I don't put in that much effort into Magic & I made lots of mistakes this run), but I'm not complaining. The third run was effectively six free packs of cards.

Does traditional constructed ever shift off Guilds of Ravnica though? It's somewhat annoying that it's the same format all the time. GRN draft isn't boring like M19, but it does get tedious.

There have been competitive drafts of other sets already and there is an event schedule, so you can look up the rotation.

Your results are far above average, so congratulations on that, but don't expext them to stay that way. The bad value of this event has to do with the extremely low reward for 0 and 1 wins. Most of the time the average player does better, but a series of bad drafts will cost you a fortune.

I played a few more runs and I'm at 5-1, 1-2, 3-2, 0-2, 1-2 so far. Oops. Either I play against significantly better opposition in competitive draft, or I'm not nearly as good as I hope I am. I'll continue to play the format though, I think it's deeper than BO1 limited and I still aspire to get better.

For the interested: https://www.channelfireball.com/article ... 1545566167

tl; dr: play quick & traditional constructed if you want to go infinite. If you must draft, traditional draft is slightly better than quick draft. The very best players in the game can conceivably go infinite in traditional draft, but not in quick draft.
